KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — Regional and state leaders dove into Northeast Tennessee's music economy at a community summit in Kingsport on Thursday.
'Northeast Tennessee has a very rich tradition of music in this region, and we want to make sure that we're taking full advantage of that musical heritage to allow for our music ecosystem in this region to grow,' Jimmy Wheeler, Tennessee Entertainment Commission director of business development, said.
Last year, East Tennessee State University launched the 'Northeast Tennessee Music Census.'

After receiving more than 1,200 responses, the results found earnings from music totaled $75.9 million.
Several roundtables were held at the event to provide an opportunity for music creators, venue operators, educators, industry professionals and more to contribute perspectives.
'We have a great base and a lot to build on and Northeast Tennessee is the first region in our state that we've done this music census in, and we felt like we had a great group of people to help lead us in that in that census,' Wheeler said. 'We are excited about what the future holds for Northeast Tennessee.'
