OFA students get up close and personal with local livestock

OWEGO, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Chickens, cows, bees, plants; students at Owego Free Academy got to see it all during today's Ag Career Day. OFA held its Agriculture Career Day on Tuesday, which featured live, interactive exhibits, including a petting zoo, and demonstrations from local farms and businesses. The school's animal science teacher, Derek Hill, says some of these students have never been up close and personal with livestock until today. Hill says ten different local ag businesses were at the school giving presentations to the students. 'We have so many businesses that need help and need to hire employees. And the only way we're going to do that, is trying to get our youth knowledgeable about the different areas. Ag's no longer that traditional pitchfork and farmer, we're talking about drones, clones,' said Hill. Hill says the career day was actually the students' idea and he was just happy to be facilitating. One business had newborn chicks in an incubator while another gave the students a free plant to take home and care for.
