Hoe Yean's Silver Sparks Hope For More WUG 2025 Medals

From Ahmad Nazrin Syahmi Mohamad Arif ESSEN (Germany), July 18 (Bernama) -- National swimming ace Khiew Hoe Yean's impressive feat is hoped to spark more success for the Malaysian contingent at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 World University Games (WUG) here. Malaysia's chef de mission (CDM) to WUG 2025, Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hafiz Yusoff, said Hoe Yean's silver medal in the men's 400-metre freestyle event yesterday not only ended a 34-year wait, but was also sweetened by a new national record. bootstrap slideshow With Hoe Yean's achievement, Mohd Hafiz believed the national contingent was on the right track to achieving its target of seven medals regardless of colour. 'We expect that Hoe Yean's achievement will generate momentum for more medal-winning performances in upcoming events. 'I believe the Malaysian contingent is now on the best path to achieving the targeted medals. We hope all athletes will deliver their best to achieve personal bests and, secondly, reach the podium,' he told reporters here. Yesterday (early morning Malaysian time), Hoe Yean made history by clinching the silver medal in a thrilling final at the Schwimm-und Sprunghalle im Europasportpark in Berlin, marking Malaysia's first medal of the current edition. In that race, Hoe Yean also erased his own national record of 3 minutes 48.36 seconds by clocking 3:47.38s. The success ended Malaysia's 34-year medal drought in swimming at WUG, last achieved by Jeffrey Ong, who won silver in the men's 1,500m freestyle at the 1991 edition in Sheffield.

Malaysia Head Into 2025 WUG With 'All For One, One For All' Mindset

By Ahmad Nazrin Syahmi Mohamad Arif ESSEN (Germany), July 15 (Bernama) -- The cream of Malaysia's top varsity athletes are all primed for action in the 2025 World University Games (WUG) at the Rhine-Ruhr here from July 16-27. A total of 64 national athletes - 39 men and 25 women - will compete in artistic gymnastics, badminton, archery, athletics, swimming and taekwondo at the biennial Games, hosted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). bootstrap slideshow The WUG 2025 is one of the biggest Games to be held this year, with an estimated 9,000 athletes and officials from over 100 countries converging on the five major cities in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, namely Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim and Hagen, as well as the city of Berlin. The Rhine-Ruhr holds a long heritage in the university sports landscape. Before the emergence of the modern WUG in 1959, Germany had hosted the Third International University Sports Week in Dortmund in August 1953, which became one of the early symbols of the revival of European sportsmanship after World War II. Duisburg, one of the main venues, is also remembered for successfully hosting the 1989 edition, just 153 days after replacing the original hosts, Sao Paolo of Brazil. The 2025 WUG's official mascot, called Wanda, is a peregrine falcon, which is renowned for recording the fastest speed in a downward dive (called a stoop) at over 300 kilometres (km) per hour. This beautiful bird not only symbolises speed and agility, but is also the most widespread species in the world, living in a variety of environments, including urban and post-industrial areas along the Rhine and Ruhr Rivers.

Sea Of Red Devils, United Chants Rock National Stadium

By Ahmad Nazrin Syahmi Mohamad Arif KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Bernama) -- Tens of thousands of hardcore Manchester United fans have transformed National Stadium in Bukit Jalil a sea of red as they descended onto the stadium and its grounds ahead of their beloved club's Maybank Challenge Cup match against the ASEAN All-Stars tonight. The excitement of fans, local and throughout Southeast Asia, is quite understandable as the last time the 13-time Premier League champions came to Malaysia was in 2009, and many fans began arriving at the stadium as early as 1 pm, all decked in various versions of the Red Devils jersey and waving club flags joyously. bootstrap slideshow United fan Kyawswar, who hails from Myanmar, said this was his first opportunity to see his favourite team live and that he did not regret spending nearly USD 700 (RM2,954) to attend the match. "Manchester United has been my favourite team since childhood, ever since David Beckham captured our hearts as fans. This year's Asia tour brings them to a location close enough for me to attend. Last year, they visited Bangkok, but unfortunately, I missed it. 'Although this season has been quite disappointing, my loyalty to the team remains strong," he told reporters, adding that he was still adamant in showing up to see his team tonight despite their poor recent showing. "Once a Red Devil, always a Red Devil. The team needs to improve. The individual players are talented, they just need to score more goals. Although the team isn't performing poorly, their lack of scoring leads to losses. We believe in their spirit, and we are confident that the team will overcome these challenges," he said. Fellow United fan Tanagra Fisa from Jakarta, Indonesia, could barely contain her excitement about tonight's match as it saved her a considerable sum to come to Malaysia instead of going to England to see them play. "I'm quite happy and excited to watch this match. This is the team I support, and it's a great opportunity to see my favourite player, Garnacho (Alejandro Garnacho), up close. Going to England would be way more expensive, so I'm very happy they came here," she said.
