Malaysia-BRICS trade hits RM818 billion in 2024, MITI reports

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's trade with BRICS member countries surged to RM818 billion in 2024, making up 35.2% of the nation's total global trade, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). The ministry also confirmed RM104.9 billion in realised investments from BRICS nations as of last year. MITI stated that Malaysia's engagement as a BRICS partner country is a strategic move to explore market access, attract foreign investments, and assess broader implications before considering full membership. 'Although Malaysia is not yet a full BRICS member, the country has already gained economically from ties with BRICS nations, many of which are existing trade and investment partners,' the ministry said. The statement was part of a parliamentary reply to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (PN–Kemaman), who inquired about the tangible benefits of Malaysia's cooperation with BRICS, particularly in economic development and sustainability. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reinforced Malaysia's commitment to multilateral cooperation during the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, held from July 6–7, 2025. MITI noted that Malaysia's partnership with BRICS could enhance regional supply chains, expand market access, and open new investment avenues. 'Cooperation with BRICS supports Malaysia's push for a rules-based, inclusive global trading system while strengthening economic resilience against protectionism,' MITI added. The ministry also emphasised the importance of joint efforts between BRICS and ASEAN to foster mutual benefits in trade, sustainable development, clean energy, and emerging technologies. As ASEAN chair in 2025, Malaysia will lead initiatives such as the ASEAN AI Safety Network Declaration, the ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit (August 11–13, 2025), and the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (September 17, 2025). These programmes will involve BRICS members like China, India, and Russia. BRICS, a forum for leading emerging economies, now includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. - Bernama

In a written Parliamentary reply published on the Dewan Rakyat portal yesterday, it also reported that a total of RM104.9 billion in investments from BRICS countries had been realised in Malaysia as of last year. Malaysia's engagement with BRICS as a partner country is a strategic step, enabling it to explore market access opportunities, attract potential foreign investment, and evaluate the broader implications before deciding on full BRICS membership. 'Although Malaysia is not yet a full BRICS member, the country has already benefited economically from its ties with BRICS nations, many of which are existing trade and investment partners. 'At the same time, BRICS may also view this engagement as an opportunity to assess Malaysia's commitment to advancing the group's agenda,' Miti said. It was responding to Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar's query on the tangible benefits of Malaysia's cooperation with BRICS, particularly in economic development and sustainability. Miti noted that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had expressed Malaysia's commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and inclusivity in line with BRICS principles during his participation in the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, held from July 6 to July 7 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 'As a BRICS partner country, Malaysia can use this opportunity to enhance regional supply chain integration, broaden market access, and open new investment channels. 'Cooperation with BRICS also supports Malaysia's efforts to promote a rules-based, inclusive global trading system, while strengthening economic resilience against protectionism and economic decoupling,' it said. Miti added that the government believes in the importance of strengthening joint efforts between BRICS and Asean to bring mutual benefits to both regional blocs. Through collaboration in areas including trade, sustainable development, clean energy, and emerging technologies, both regions can improve economic resilience, expand investment opportunities, and reinforce their positions in addressing global challenges. In conjunction with Malaysia's Asean chairmanship in 2025, the country will lead several regional initiatives, including the development of the 'Declaration on the Establishment of an Asean AI Safety Network', the Asean AI Malaysia Summit 2025 (August 11 to August 13), and the Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur on September 17. 'These programmes and initiatives will also involve Asean Dialogue Partners such as China, India, and Russia, all of whom are BRICS member countries,' it said. BRICS is a forum for cooperation among a group of leading emerging economies. It includes 10 countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. - BERNAMA More Like This

Tourist's chilling footage rekindles interest in Terengganu's forgotten resort

THERE is something surreal about an abandoned housing project. The lack of inhabitants, and the dilapidated state of things create a haunting yet fascinating world that parallels our own. It is an adventure in the waiting, but not for the faint-hearted. Recently, a foreign man, most likely a tourist, came to attention on the cyberspace for his video documenting the abandoned Strawberry Resort Kijai in Terengganu. Huge apartment-like structures could be seen partially submerged in the emerald water. The entrance had been reclaimed by nature and a spooky silence hung about the place. Snapshots from the video further showed a cave-like entrance descending into total darkness. Strawberry Awana Kijal resort in Terengganu. — ًِ (@bckupacc99) July 12, 2025 It is hard to imagine a time when this resort was at its peak, filled with tourists and bustling with activities. But what happened to the Strawberry Resort Kijai? According to youtuber FlyingAyam, the resort with at least 200 hotel rooms was developed around 2005 but never fully operated due to unknown issues. According to him, only the grand hall and the apartments were opened to tourists and visitors. Later on, a few units of the apartments were sold to individuals and the resort was officially closed down in 2010 after the state government acquired the entire land. However, there is good news too. The Terengganu government in a statement stated that the abandoned resort is set to be transformed into a five-star resort following the signing of a development agreement. The Chief Minister, Dato' Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, stated that the project will commence in the first quarter of 2024 and is expected to be completed by 2026. 'The rebranding of the resort facilities, which span more than eight hectares, is being carried out by the state government through Terengganu Inc, in collaboration with the landowner, the Terengganu State Heritage Trust Board (LTAWNT)' he said, back in 2023. 'This RM250 million project will be developed by property and hotel development company iKHASAS Land Sdn Bhd, while resort operations will be managed by Courtyard by Marriott,' he added. —July 13, 2025 Main image: @bckupacc99 (X)

Anwar: Terengganu chosen as first state to launch Madani Tuition initiative, benefiting over 9,000 students

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 12 — Terengganu has been chosen to be the first state to implement the Madani Tuition programme with an allocation of RM5.27 million, which will benefit 9,408 students, involving the assistance of 614 school teachers. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Terengganu was chosen due to the excellent achievements shown by students in the state in public examination results. 'I appreciate and see Terengganu recording excellent results and I am also proud as a father and grandfather. (Therefore) I would like to announce specifically (Madani Tuition) for Terengganu first as a start as assistance to school students. 'This assistance (is carried out) with the cooperation of teaching assistance from school is the first programme in Malaysia,' he said when officiating the Closing Ceremony of the Terengganu People's Madani (PMR) Programme 2025 at Pasar Kedai Payang, here today. The ceremony was also attended by Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Anwar said the implementation of the Madani tuition programme under the poverty eradication initiative in Terengganu was in addition to the RM100 assistance channelled for the purchase of books and reading materials for students and teachers. The implementation of the programme, he said, would be supervised by the minister and secretary-general of the ministry involved, in addition to plans to expand its implementation to Kelantan after this. In addition, Anwar also announced that the government had approved the construction of a new matriculation college in Marang in addition to the acquisition of land for the Kuala Terengganu Polytechnic campus. At the same ceremony, a total of 10 excellent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 students also received Madani (PERMAI) devices. Meanwhile, Anwar said a total of RM30 million had been allocated to Terengganu through the SejaTi Madani Programme, which is an initiative of the Unity Government to boost community economic activities. 'Each village is given funds and the village chooses what (community economic activities) it wants to do and meets to decide what is necessary (for that activity). 'I went to a village in Parit Buntar, Perak, I saw them buying drones... they bought two drones and then rented them out to spray fertilizer. Now every month the net profit is RM30,000... if we empower the villagers and manage it well, sometimes the project is better than other projects,' he said. SejaTi Madani focuses on five main sectors, namely agriculture and food, tailoring and handicrafts, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality as well as green activities and recycling. Terengganu PMR 2025 recorded an unexpected response when the total number of visitors as of 12 noon today reached 82,182 people, exceeding the initial target of 25,000 visitors for the three-day programme. Themed 'Pembangunan Madani Rakyat Sejahtera, PMR 2025 is organised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) through the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU) in strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Works (KKR) and the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM). — Bernama
