Klang River project turns up 16 corpses in three years

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 16 corpses have been discovered since work began on the Selangor government's Klang River flood mitigation project almost three years ago. The Home Ministry reported that the bodies were discovered at several points along the river project's area under various sets of circumstances. 'Some discoveries were made during river cleaning works, riverbed dredging or even during routine patrols by maintenance teams and enforcement agencies. 'However, post-mortem examinations of the 16 bodies have found no identifiable criminal elements. 'This is due to the bodies already being severely decomposed at the time of discovery,' the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply dated Wednesday (Aug 13). The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Kuala Langat) on the number of bodies found during the implementation of the project. He had also asked what further actions were being taken to determine any connection between reported deaths and the bodies found. Earlier in June this year, news of the gruesome discovery of over 10 corpses, which included an infant, by workers of the flood mitigation project, sent shockwaves throughout Malaysian society. The bodies were discovered over a three-year span by workers after works to deepen the Klang River began on Nov 1, 2022.

16 bodies found during Klang River flood mitigation project

KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities have discovered 16 bodies along the Klang River flood mitigation project's work areas since the project began in November 2022. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the bodies were found under various circumstances, including during river cleaning, riverbed dredging, and routine patrols by maintenance teams and enforcement agencies. "Post-mortem examinations found no identifiable criminal elements, as the bodies were already in a decomposed state when discovered," he said in a written reply in response to Kuala Langat member of Parliament Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi. Yunus had asked the Home Minister to clarify the total number of bodies found and the steps taken to determine any links to the deaths. It was previously reported that at least 10 bodies, including that of an infant, have been discovered during ongoing flood mitigation works along the Klang River under the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative. Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) managing director Syaiful Azmen Nordin was reported as saying that the discoveries were not isolated incidents, with remains being found almost monthly since river deepening and widening works commenced on Nov 1, 2022.

New 6% service tax won't hurt medical tourism, says health minister

Malaysia recorded RM2.72 billion in revenue from medical tourism last year, marking a 21% increase from 2023. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Malaysia's medical tourism is unlikely to be impacted by the expansion of the sales and service tax from July 1, according to the health ministry. Its minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said in a written parliamentary reply that the country's medical tourism sector is expected to remain competitively priced in the region, despite the 6% service tax imposed on foreign patients. 'This is because medical costs in Malaysia are still 30% to 40% lower than in neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore for key treatments including gastroenterology, cardiology, orthopaedics, and oncology,' he said. He was responding to Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Kuala Langat) who asked about the implications of the expanded SST on Malaysia's reputation as the leading medical tourism destination. Yunus pointed out that Malaysia had generated over RM2 billion in revenue and attracted 1.3 million medical tourists from around the world in 2023. In June, the finance ministry announced a 6% service tax on private healthcare, traditional and complementary medicine, and allied health services provided to foreigners. The tax applies to service providers whose total taxable revenue from all services exceeds RM1.5 million over the past 12 months. Dzulkefly said the medical tourism industry continues to show highly positive growth. 'In 2024, the sector's performance has seen even stronger growth, with revenue from health tourism rising to RM2.72 billion, a 21% increase from the previous year. This was driven in part by a 14% increase in arrivals, with 1.59 million health tourists recorded,' he said. He added that Malaysia's health tourism sector offers not only competitive pricing, but is also recognised for its quality of care, clinical effectiveness, and signature Malaysian hospitality.
