He said Sarawak has always welcomed strategic partnerships that will benefit the people, region, and nation. 'Our leaders welcome any opportunity to explore new ideas, technologies, and innovations. 'As such, we look forward to learning and exploring new approaches and innovations our Korean stakeholders will share with us in this event regarding hydrogen, smart grids, digital energy systems, and clean technology commercialisation which offer us real, scalable opportunities to enhance our regional capabilities and resilience,' he said in a speech for the opening ceremony of the Sustainable and Valuable Energy Conference (SAVE) 2025 here today. Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni delivered the speech. Abang Johari, who is also Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said the partnership would deliver value in various forms in line with the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'These include technology transfer in frontier sectors like hydrogen fuel cells, grid automation and carbon capture; joint ventures and investment facilitation to spur industrial collaboration and local supply chain development; capacity building through research and development, skills training and professional exchange; as well as pilots and demonstrators, to de-risk innovation and prepare for full-scale deployment.' He pointed out that Sarawak's energy transformation is driven by PCDS 2030, which calls for a diversified, sustainable, and inclusive economic model. 'Sarawak is already a leader in renewable energy. With more than 70 per cent of our electricity sourced from clean hydropower, we offer one of the lowest carbon electricity grids in Southeast Asia. 'But we know that we must do more and move faster,' he said. In line with PCDS, he said the state is expanding its portfolio to include utility-scale solar and floating photovoltaic (PV) projects; green hydrogen production for mobility and export; biomass and waste-to-energy technologies; and energy efficiency programmes across industries. On SAVE, Abang Johari said the conference reflected Sarawak's commitment to clean energy and green industry, while providing a strategic platform to strengthen policy implementation, drive green economic growth, attract sustainable foreign direct investments, accelerate technology transfer and localisation, enhance the state's global positioning, develop human capital, and promote inclusive rural development. SAVE 2025 brought together over 260 participants, including experts, policymakers, business leaders, and innovators from Malaysia and Korea to explore practical solutions for transitioning to cleaner, more efficient, and economically viable energy systems. The two-day conference, held in collaboration with Korea South-East Power Co (Koen) and leading Korean industry players, marked the first time Sarawak plays host. SAVE 2025 is part of a progressive energy event series, previously held in Putrajaya in 2023 and Puchong, Selangor last year. Among those present were Association of Professional Technicians and Technologist chairman Ahmad Zawawi Kasmin, Koen senior manager Soon Eon Kwon, and Malaysian Association of Engineers president Datuk Feroz Hanif Mohamed Ahmad. Jointly organised by the Association of Professional Technicians and Technologists (APTT) and Korea South-East Power (KOEN), the conference will feature cutting-edge technologies, progressive policy frameworks, and innovative business models that promote sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive energy systems. Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the opening ceremony. 'Through this programme, we are collaborating with Korean energy experts to introduce their technologies and services in Sarawak. 'Our goal is to foster knowledge transfer, promote renewable energy and explore new solutions beyond solar and hydro,' APTT chairman Ts Ir Ahmad Zawawi Kasmin told The Borneo Post at APTT office here today. Around 300 participants are expected to attend the two-day event, which will include keynote addresses by both local and international experts. Among the featured speakers is Dr SungHun Lee, principal researcher at the Korea Institute of Materials Science, who will present a joint KIMS-Doosan Enerbility study on the development of high-performance thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine components, designed to endure extreme temperatures and corrosive environments. Another highlight is a presentation by Seokhwan Jung of the Innovative Small Modular Reactor (i-SMR) Development Agency, who will introduce small modular nuclear reactor technology – an emerging alternative to conventional solar and wind energy. Other invited speakers include KOEN Sooneon Kwon; Ir Dr Angelia Liew from the Sarawak Premier's Office; Jayhee Suhr, International Cooperation Manager at the Korea Nuclear Association; Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab of the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications, Sarawak; Dr Taejoo Oh of IAM Korea; Joogmyung Paik of Asian Power Energy Corp, Korea; Dr Ng Sing Mak of Sarawak Energy Berhad; Jongun Park of Power Tech Solution, Korea; Joosuk Kim of Heat Integrated Static Equipment, Korea; and James Chong Myoung Bae of HFS Heavy Industries, Malaysia. The event will also feature Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions with Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), offering Malaysian entrepreneurs opportunities to explore joint ventures and sign memoranda of understanding (MoUs). 'The idea is to bring these expert Korean SMEs to join the conference on August 12, with the aim of signing several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) thereafter,' said Ahmad Zawawi. In conjunction with SAVE 2025, APTT and the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) will co-host the MBOT Borneo High-Tea on August 13 at 2.30pm, also at the Imperial Hotel, bringing together MBOT members from across Malaysia. Ahmad Zawawi added that the conference comes at a timely moment as Sarawak advances its ambition to become a regional renewable energy hub. 'With Sarawak's agenda to generate 10 megawatts by 2030 and 15 megawatts by 2035, this is where APTT can help by bringing in investors and expertise. 'And by bringing them, we can have a transfer of knowledge between the outsiders in Sarawak. 'So by the end of the day, it will benefit Sarawak itself and come out to uplift our economy for Sarawak itself,' he said. Registration is open until August 11, so secure your spot now at Also present at today's press conference were ValourTech Machineries Sdn Bhd Managing Director Che Mohammad Nizam Che Kamaruddin, APTT's Southern Region Liaison Officer Mohamad Fahmi Ibrahim, APTT Deputy Secretary and Associate Professor Ts Monica Wessy, as well as APTT Lead Training and Development Sector Ts Ir Dr Kismet Hong Ping. lead SAVE 2025 Sustainable and Valuable Energy
