A Singapore High Court sentenced an Indian national to over 14 years in jail for sexually assaulting a minor, reported The Strait Times.
The man, identified as Ramalingam Selvasekaran, was sentenced to 14 years, three months, and two weeks in prison after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl at his provision shop in Jurong West. He was found guilty of rape and two counts of outrage of modesty, said the report.
The incident took place between 4:40 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. on October 28, 2021, when the girl had visited her store and returned to buy an ice cream. According to the prosecutors cited by the report, he took her to a back room, where he forced her into oral sex. After the assault, the girl managed to escape and approached a passerby, who immediately alerted the police.
'The fact that she had not run off after the first act of molestation, or that she did not resist the assaults or inform her grandfather, were all to my mind sufficiently explained, particularly given that she was still young and immature," said Justice Aidan Xu, as per the report.
The judge dismissed these arguments, stating they did not discredit the victim's testimony. 'While there was no dispute that Ramalingam suffered from erectile dysfunction, the prosecution's expert witness gave a cogent explanation that oral rape remained possible," Justice Xu told The Straits Times."
