Local learners shine at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair in Secunda
Learners from local schools demonstrated exceptional innovation and problem-solving skills at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists regional competition on July 26 at the Sasol Training Centre, Ukhozi Lodge.
Young scientists impressed judges with their original ideas, scientific curiosity, and commitment to tackling real-world challenges affecting South African communities.
The engineering category emerged as the most popular at this year's fair, drawing 60 entries, followed by strong participation in energy (31), social sciences (29), and environmental studies (20).
Among the standout achievers were Alandri Bezuidenhout and Aiden Pösch from Laerskool Secunda, who earned a bronze and gold medal, respectively.
Khaya Mthombeni and Tsiko Tshaduli from Highveld Park High School each received a silver medal. The Eskom Expo hosts regional science fairs in 35 regions across South Africa, offering school learners the opportunity to showcase their innovative projects and research on a competitive platform.
This year's participants went through a rigorous pre-selection, which included workshops aimed at boosting scientific skills, and mandatory school- and district-level expos that reached over 17 500 learners.
Mologadi Motshele, acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, emphasised the strategic importance of STEMI (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation) in building a sustainable future for South Africa.
'By cultivating interest and excellence in STEMI from an early age, the Eskom Expo not only develops individual potential but also contributes to economic growth, innovation, and social equity,' said Motshele.
'These young scientists are future problem-solvers who will tackle challenges in energy, climate change, healthcare, food security, and digital transformation.'
The regional science fairs offer more than just awards; they provide a platform for participants to engage with peers, educators, and STEMI professionals.
These interactions are designed to foster critical thinking, sharpen communication skills, and refine research capabilities. Besides medals, learners can win special awards such as best female project, best innovation project, best energy project, and best development project.
Eskom Expo executive director, Parthy Chetty, highlighted the long-term vision: 'The Eskom Expo is South Africa's only national initiative dedicated to growing future scientists and engineers.
'These regional fairs are a vital first step in connecting young minds with professionals, helping to elevate their research ideas and bring their innovations to life,' said Chetty.
