Customs officials seize ganja from passenger at Coimbatore airport
Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs have seized 5.25 kg of hydroponic weed (ganja), worth almost ₹5 crore, from Muhammad Fazil who arrived at Coimbatore International Airport on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from Bangkok. The officers, based on intelligence inputs from DD, DG Arm Delhi, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, intercepted the passenger, a resident of Kozhikode, who arrived at Coimbatore airport from Bangkok via Singapore by flight TR 540. The officers seized the ganja from his checked-in baggage. Further investigation is in progress under the NDPS ACT, 1986, read with the Customs Act, 1962, according to the Customs.

Immigration officer, B'deshi man held for gold smuggling
Mumbai: An immigration officer at the city airport was arrested along with a Bangladeshi national for allegedly smuggling 1.4 kg of gold dust worth Rs 1.2 crore from Dubai. In the past 5 months, more than two dozen airport and airline employees have been arrested for aiding and abetting gold smuggling . On Wednesday, the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs arrested immigration officer Anil Kumar Rai and seized four pouches containing 1.4 kg of gold from him. Rai said the pouches were handed over to him by a transit passenger, Mohammed Imran Hossain, near the toilet by the international transit transfer counter. Hossain had arrived from Dubai. Customs officers detained Hossain, who said he gave the gold to Rai for monetary consideration. Sources said Rai has helped the syndicate in removing the gold from the airport on several occasions in the past. Hossain said his mentor was one Fasad. — S Ahmed Ali

Four held at Mumbai airport for smuggling drugs worth Rs 20 crores
Image used is for representational purposes only MUMBAI: The Customs department at the International airport in three separate cases of narcotics arrested four persons and seized hydroponic weeds worth Rs 20 crores. In the first case the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport on specific intelligence intercepted a couple passenger Mohammed Bilakhiyais (40) and his wife Afreen Bilakhiya who were suspected to be smuggling narcotics from Bangkok. On checking their baggage resulted in recovery of 11,808 grams of greenish substance purported to be narcotics. On checking with the field test kit it tested positive for hydroponic weed. Officials said the estimated value of 11,808 grams of weed is worth Rs 11.80 crores. On checking his baggage resulted in recovery of 5,904 grams of hydroponic weeds worth Rs 5.90 crores. Similarly in the third case the AIU detained two passengers Laxman Mahadik and Harsha Ketan Chheda who arrived from Bangkok on Tuesday. "As they were suspected to be carrying some narcotics, officials detained them and carried out a thorough checking of their baggage resulting in recovery of greenish substance hidden inside pillow covers. On opening them we found 5,904 grams of weed whose value is worth Rs 5.90 crores."
