‘Water bombing' measure deployed to fight wildfires
MUKAH: Wildfires raging in plantations and jungles in Mukah, Sarawak surged beyond 110ha in size as of yesterday morning. Aerial water bombing by the Fire and Rescue Department Air Wing Unit was carried out and reduced hotspots to 75ha at noon. Ashes from the blaze are causing widespread air pollution. The Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board said the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in Mukah hit the 160 unhealthy mark yesterday morning, with the district enveloped in haze. 'The Mukah population have been advised to stop outdoor activities and use face masks at all times,' the board said, adding that firefighters have been deployed and are using aerial tactics to contain the wildfires. The Fire and Rescue Department said it has deployed helicopters with water bombing capabilities to douse the Mukah fire. 'Our helicopters can carry out up to 15 aerial sorties. However, the fire is spreading closer to the Mukah Airport runway and into the Universiti Teknologi Mara Mukah campus, threatening the people there. 'Aerial water bombings are in full swing and our ground teams are trying to use total flooding methods.' The Marudi district is also seeing an inferno raging in plantations, firefighters in Kota Samarahan in southern Sarawak are battling a landfill blaze and teams in Serian district are fighting another fire in Kampung Danau. Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Dougglas Uggah said the state is on red alert for wildfires and haze, as well as water shortages in numerous interior districts caused by worsening drought. On Wednesday, Bakelalan state assemblyman Baru Bian confirmed that thousands of people living in eight localities in his constituency along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border had run out of drinking water due to weeks of drought. Bian is liaising with state government authorities to arrange emergency water supply delivery for his remote constituency. Bakelalan constituency, which stretches from the Lawas district to the Kalimantan border, has a total population of about 50,000 people.

2 Bangladeshis stopped for lugging chainsaw, brooms, signboards on motorcycle
SHAH ALAM: Two Bangladeshi nationals were stopped and fined on the main stretch of the Federal Highway near the Melawati roundabout here yesterday for riding their motorbike dangerously. They were seen hugging signboards and brooms, and one of them was even carrying a chainsaw, which the blade was protruding from the side. The pillion rider, believed to be in his 20s, was wearing a construction hardhat instead of a motorcycle helmet. They were stopped by policemen from the Shah Alam Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division, who were conducting an operation in the area. The rider, known only as Ayatollah, 28, said he and his pillion were carrying their tools as they were working as landscapers along the highway. "This is my own motorcycle — I bought it two months ago and don't have a licence. I use it for work, cutting trees and cleaning both sides of the highway between Kuala Lumpur and Klang," he said. They were among hundreds of motorcyclists detained for various offences, particularly for failing to use the designated motorcycle lane on the Federal Highway. Most of the detained riders claimed that they were unaware of the motorcycle lane, despite commuting daily. A 36-year-old employee of a law firm said he forgot to switch his navigation app to motorcycle mode when travelling from Jinjang, Kepong, to the Shah Alam court complex. "I forgot to change to motorcycle mode, and I'm not really familiar with the Federal Highway and its motorcycle lanes. "The navigation app directed me along the main route. If I'd switched to motorcycle mode, perhaps it would have shown the special lane," he said. Yesterday, Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said police issued 147 summonses against motorcyclists during a joint enforcement operation named Op Bersepadu at Km13.3 of the Federal Highway heading towards Klang. The operation – bolstered by drone surveillance – was conducted by the Shah Alam district Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division, the Air Wing Unit and the Selangor Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department. "A total of 180 vehicles were inspected and 147 summonses were issued. The majority of offences involved failure to use the motorcycle lane, with 141 summonses issued for the violation," he said.

Op Bersepadu: 147 summonses issued to motorcyclists on Federal Highway
KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday issued 147 summonses against motorcyclists during a joint enforcement operation at KM13.3 of the Federal Highway, heading towards Klang. Shah Alam police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said Op Bersepadu, bolstered by drone surveillance, was conducted by the Shah Alam district Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Division, the Air Wing Unit and the Selangor Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department. "The operation's main objective was to raise awareness of the designated motorcycle lanes on the highway. "This initiative follows an increase in the number of accidents involving motorcyclists and pillion riders this year, compared with previous year, in the Shah Alam area along the Federal Highway," he said in a statement. Iqbal said a 30-member team, including three senior officers and 25 rank-and-file personnel, ran the operation from 10am to 12pm "The drone unit enabled us to spot offences before riders reached the roadblock, or we could record evidence in photo or video form to issue summonses later. "A total of 180 vehicles were inspected and 147 summonses were issued. The majority of offences involved failure to use the motorcycle lane, with 141 summonses issued for the violation," he said. Other offences included misuse of the emergency lane and licensing-related offences. Iqbal reminded motorcyclists to always comply with traffic regulations and use the designated motorcycle lanes.

Mass. man drove over 140 mph to evade New Hampshire troopers, police said
A Massachusetts man drove over 140 mph to evade police officers in New Hampshire on Monday morning, according to New Hampshire State Police. Brandon E. Babcock, 22, of Salem, was one of dozens of people stopped in New Hampshire during a Memorial Day traffic enforcement initiative by New Hampshire State Police. Babcock had been driving a white 2024 Corvette on the northbound side of Interstate 93 in Salem, New Hampshire, at around 7:45 a.m. on May 26 when troopers spotted him reaching speeds of 110 mph, the department said. When troopers tried to pull Babcock over, he sped up 'significantly' and passed other drivers across the traffic lanes, the department said. Babcock was tracked by the New Hampshire State Police Air Wing used in the police's Memorial Day traffic initiative, and he reached speeds up to 140 mph as he fled from the troopers, the department said. Babcock then got off the highway at Exit 3 and continued driving on side roads in Windham. Troopers in the Air Wing Unit tracked the Corvette and let police on the ground know its whereabouts. A trooper was able to pull Babcock over on Johnson Road and arrest him on multiple charges, including reckless driving and disobeying an officer, the department said. Babcock was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Salem District Court in New Hampshire on July 17. Minimum penalties for reckless driving in New Hampshire include a $620 fine, a 60-day loss of driver's license and an additional mandatory penalty assessment. The standard fine for driving 86 mph or higher is $434 in the Granite State.
