Prayagraj airport's new terminal to be functional in Aug

Prayagraj: City airport prepares to welcome passengers to brand-new, state-of-the-art terminal building. Constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 200 crore, the terminal is scheduled to begin operations from August, offering international-standard amenities and significantly enhanced passenger comfort. Initiated in October 2023 by the Airport Authority of India, the terminal's construction is now in its final stages. Although there were efforts to complete the project before the Maha Kumbh 2025, the original timeline could not be met. To manage increasing passenger load, the existing terminal was already expanded as a temporary measure. Spanning over 14,000 square metres, the new terminal is designed to handle up to 1,200 passengers at a time. This is a notable improvement over the current terminal's capacity of 850 passengers. Combined, both terminals will now be able to serve up to 2,000 passengers per hour, greatly boosting the airport's operational efficiency. The modern terminal includes 24 check-in counters, six boarding gates, three large baggage claim belts and three aerobridges. Additionally, there are two separate VIP lounges designated for arrivals and departures. Passenger convenience has been prioritised with parking space designed to accommodate 450 cars, four buses and 50 app-based taxis. One of the key upgrades, which is already in use at the airport, is the installation of the CAT II Instrument Landing System (ILS), which allows aircraft to land even during low-visibility conditions, such as at night or during fog—enhancing overall flight safety and reliability. Airport authorities say that with the addition of new aerobridges, which will now become six in total, the airport is well-equipped to manage an increased number of flights without delays in takeoffs and landings. Officials believe this will not only improve air connectivity for Prayagraj but also support the influx of visitors expected during large-scale events like the Kumbh 2030.

Former IPS officer, popular Bhojpuri singer are latest entrants in Prashant Kishor's party

A former IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre joined Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraaj Party Friday – a major boost in the arm for the outfit months ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls. Popular Bhojpuri singer and Sasaram resident Ritesh Pandey who gained popularity for his 2019 song, 'Hello Kaun', also joined the party. JP Singh, a resident of Saran, is a 2000-batch officer who recently took voluntary retirement. At that time, he had been serving as additional director general police, Crime Investigation Department, and was due to retire in July 2027. According to sources, Singh is eyeing a ticket from Chhapra seat. Kishor, who welcomed them both into the outfit, said: 'JP Singh is a great example of how a person from Bihar rose after having fought the poor system. He had studied in a government school at Ekma village of Saran, worked in the defence forces and later with Airport Authority of India before finally becoming an IPS officer. He will bring great value to the party'. Pandey, he said, was the son of a school teacher. 'His father had lost his job during Lalu Prasad's regime and had taken his family to Benares to give them good education,' he said. Singh said he quit his job to join Kishor's 'epoch-making movement'. 'My parents named me Jai Prakash, a great name in Indian history. When I saw that a person like Prashant Kishor, who had worked in the UN, could leave his comfort zone to work for Bihar, I felt the same pain and urge to do something for my state.' Pandey said he was 'inspired' by what Kishor was doing. 'I know how Bihar people used to face ill-treatment outside the state…I wanted to do my bit by deciding to strengthen his hands,' he said. Santosh Singh is a Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express since June 2008. He covers Bihar with main focus on politics, society and governance. Investigative and explanatory stories are also his forte. Singh has 25 years of experience in print journalism covering Bihar, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. ... Read More

Fast track Bokaro airport's operation: DC to stakeholders

1 2 Bokaro: In a move to fast-track Bokaro airport's operation, deputy commissioner DC Ajay Nath Jha on Thursday chaired a crucial meeting at his office with senior officials of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), forest, health and administrative officials. Jha stressed that operationalising the airport is among the top priorities of the state govt and urged all departments to treat it with urgency. He instructed every department to outline their tasks and report progress within 15 days. To enhance surveillance, the DC directed district forest officer (DFO) Rajneesh Kumar to begin watchtower construction atop Satanpur Hill by month-end. BSL was asked to coordinate with relevant departments to build 10 watchtowers per security norms. Expressing concern over possible encroachment near the airport, Jha instructed BSL to coordinate and run a special encroachment clearance campaign next month to ensure safety and unhindered operations. He also stressed on maintaining regular cleanliness at the airport. Jha asked BSL to streamline and secure entry-exit routes by identifying critical access points. The DC also approved the procurement of two ambulances with four stretchers from the DMFT fund and directed the civil surgeon to ensure dual stretcher capacity in all district ambulances.

44 structures in airport funnel razed

Ahmedabad: The plane crash of June 12, one of the worst aviation disasters in India's aviation history, has prompted a series of measures. One of them is clearing structures that could pose a risk to planes. Soon after the crash, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), along with the city airport authority conducted a survey of structures around the airport. The survey identified 44 structures on different houses that could pose a risk to planes. AMC has since removed additional rooms, parapet walls, water tanks, and rooftop structures from 26 of these houses. Having a clear airport funnel zone, a designated corridor that aircraft use for takeoff and landing, is a critical component in air safety. Aviation authority notifications insist that airport funnels and their imaginary gradient should not be 'punctured' by structures or trees. An official from the AMC, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, "The height of constructions around the airport is determined based on the funnel area for plane takeoff and landing. Most constructions near the airport's funnel area are legal, with plans approved by obtaining a No Objection Certificate from the Airport Authority of India. Representatives from the corporation and the airport management company conducted a survey of the funnel area, finding no obstructive structures in the landing funnel. However, in the take-off funnel area, 44 obstructive structures were identified on various houses in Meghani Nagar and Kubernagar, and demolitions have been carried out. So far, water tanks, room tops, and parapet walls have been removed from 26 houses." These include additional rooms and water tanks built on rooftops. We are taking steps to remove such obstructive structures. On June 12, the Air India flight crashed seconds after takeoff. Structures within a kilometre of the crash site have been removed. The corporation and airport management company conduct regular surveys to monitor such issues."

Govt plans to to open new quarantine centres at four international entry points

New Delhi: The government plans to set up quarantine centres at three international border points—Amritsar, Guwahati and Petrapole—alongside Bhubaneswar in order to check the cross-border movement of potential carriers of infectious diseases. These designated centres are supported under the government's Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM). PM-ABHIMis considered the largest pan-India scheme for strengthening the healthcare infrastructure with an outlay of ₹ 64,180 crore. One of the key components of PM-ABHIM is to operationalize new public health units and strengthen existing ones at points of entry like airports, seaports, and land crossings. The quarantine centres are designed to separate and restrict the movement of individuals who have been exposed to an infectious disease, like Covid-19, but are not yet showing symptoms. These centres aim to prevent the transmission of the disease to others in the country. Previously, these centres were earmarked for Kannur (Kerala), Bhogapuram (Andhra Pradesh), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Kolkata (West Bengal).According to documents reviewed by Mint, this plan comes as the Ministry of Civil Aviation will now build quarantine centres from its budget at Kannur and Bhogapuram airports. The centres at Chennai and Kolkata airports will be built by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) as part of its airport expansion plans. This means the money previously planned for these four locations won't be needed, freeing up those funds. 'The new locations are important points of entry and connectivity: Amritsar serves as a major land route to Pakistan and a cultural hub; Guwahati is the gateway to the Northeast with extensive regional connections; Bhubaneshwar is a significant air entry point in eastern India; and Petrapole is India's largest land port facilitating substantial cross-border movement with Bangladesh,' an official familiar with the matter said. This strategic decision was discussed and ratified in the Mission Steering Group meeting of the National Health Mission held recently. 'This proactive approach ensures efficient use of resources and better preparedness for public health emergencies at critical points of entry across the nation,' the official said while emphasizing that these help in containing disease transmission, monitoring and early detection, managing high risk individuals, reducing burden on hospitals, emergency preparedness and providing specialized care and support. 'Even a single case of a novel virus, if unchecked at entry, could spark widespread community transmission and overwhelm local hospitals. Quarantine centres serve as a barrier, potentially preventing such outbreaks before they could even start,' Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, public health expert and Past President, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Cochin. Queries sent to the health ministry spokesperson remained unanswered.
