Tech Support: Apple's MacBook Air is $100 cheaper and still among the best laptops you can buy
Apple's (AAPL) latest MacBook Air is here, bringing the company's newest processor, the M4, to its bestselling line of laptops. The updated Air, available in both 13-inch and 15-inch models, also gets an extremely rare feature for a modern gadget: a $100 price cut. Yes, the 13-inch MacBook Air now starts at $999 while the 15-inch starts at $1,099. What's more, the base model of both laptops now comes with 16GB of memory, up from the 8GB Apple offered when it launched its M3 Air last year. I've been using the M4-powered 13-inch MacBook Air as my main laptop for the past few days, and it's easily lived up to my expectations of Apple's most popular computer. Let's start with the basics. The updated MacBook Air carries over the same look and feel Apple has stuck with since it redesigned the Air in 2022. That's not a bad thing. I've got an M2-powered MacBook Air at home and still appreciate how thin and light this little laptop is. The keyboard is comfortable and responsive and the trackpad is nice and spacious. Both the 13-inch Air and 15-inch model use Apple's Liquid Retina display technology, and, thanks to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 ports, support up to two external displays. The Airs also now get Apple's Center Stage webcam, which tracks your face to ensure you always stay in the middle of the frame during video calls. The Air's biggest changes, though, are under the hood. Apple says the laptop's M4 chip provides two times the performance of the M1-powered Air and 32 times that of Intel-based Airs when using certain apps. I haven't seen much of a difference in performance between my own M2-powered Air and the M4 model. Both are snappy, opening and running the apps I use every day with ease, including while doing light photo editing work in Pixelmator. That said, when I purchased my M2 Air in 2023, I needed to pay extra to upgrade to 16GB of memory, since the base model only had 8GB. Now the M4 comes with 16GB standard, which is the sweet spot for most users. Apple didn't do this for the fun of it, though. The extra memory will ensure AI apps run smoothly, something the company is keen on ensuring in the coming years. And sure, the laptop comes with Apple Intelligence installed, but I'm not exactly sold on the features quite yet. In fact, I'm less likely to interact with the software on a laptop than on my iPhone, since the main Apple Intelligence capability I use is notification summaries on my phone. Still, I'll absolutely take that extra 8GB of memory. Battery life, as it has been with all of the M-based MacBook Airs, is top-notch. I ran this pint-sized powerhouse all day without issue, even while connected to my external display at home or in the office. My one real gripe with the Air is that, like its predecessors, it only has USB-C ports on its left side. It's an incredibly minor complaint, though, and I only really notice it because my 'home office,' if you can call a kitchen table in a one-bedroom apartment an office, is set up for a laptop with ports on the right. Does that mean I wouldn't buy the Air? Not in the least, I just flip my wires around and I'm up and running. Like I said, it's a minuscule annoyance. If you're in the market for a new laptop and love Macs, the MacBook Air is easily the best option around. And that goes double if you're a Windows fan and willing to make the switch. Apple unveils the M4 MacBook Air with a price drop
Apple has introduced its latest update to the MacBook Air, bringing the M4 chip to its lightweight laptops at long last. Even though the Air lineup is getting more powerful, it's also getting cheaper. The smaller base model of the M4 MacBook Air will retail at $999, down $100 from the previous starting price. Pre-orders begin today, and the machines will be available starting on March 12. Last year's Air models were quite good but didn't do anything revolutionary, and the same seems true for the 2025 versions. There are still two size choices, 13-inch and 15-inch. RAM for the M2 and M3 laptops is 16GB by default, and the M4 model matches that standard. Apple is promising up to 18 hours of battery life, and the Airs will have support for Apple Intelligence. There's also a new look in the lineup, with the addition of a sky blue color to the now-familiar choices of silver, midnight and starlight. The company's current chip has been available in MacBook Pros, the Mac mini and the iMac for awhile now, so the power levels of the M4 have been pretty well established. But the boost for Apple's ultralights is still welcome. Apple says the new chip can make the latest Airs up to twice as fast as the M1 versions. The M4 is kitted out with a 10-core CPU and a GPU with up to 10 cores. It supports up to 32GB of unified memory. The new prices might be the most exciting part of today's Air announcements. The 13-inch M4 Air starts at $999, or $899 for buyers in education, while the 15-inch model starts at $1,199, or $1,099 for education.

Apple updates bestselling MacBook Air with M4 chip, enhanced webcam
Apple (AAPL) is updating its top-selling laptop, the MacBook Air, with its latest M4 processor a day after showing off an upgraded iPad and iPad Air. The chip is expected to provide two times the performance of the M1-equipped MacBook Air and 32 times that of Intel-based Airs while using certain apps. Available in 13-inch and 15-inch models, the M4 Airs are also $100 cheaper than their predecessors with the 13-inch versions starting at $999 rather than $1,099 and the 15-inch starting at $1,199, down from $1,299. Apple's Mac line has outperformed its iPhone, iPad, and Wearables businesses in terms of year-over-year sales, with revenue climbing 2% in 2024. The company's iPhone segment was flat year over year, while iPad and Wearables sales fell 6% and 7%, respectively. Mac revenue also jumped more than $1 billion in Q1, while iPhone revenue declined by roughly $564 million. The refreshed MacBook Air lineup should continue the positive trend for the segment as consumers and businesses look to upgrade to the company's latest offering. The revamped Airs' M4 chips now feature 10-core CPUs and 10-core GPUs and support for up to 32GB of memory. That's up from the M3's 8-core CPU and 24GB of memory. In practice, that means the Airs pack more performance while still keeping their fanless design. During a demonstration, a 15-inch Air ran a webAI's 22 billion parameter Companion large language model, rendered a 4K image using the Blender app, opened several productivity apps, and ran the game Wuthering Waves without any kind of slowdown. The laptops also now include Apple's Center Stage camera, which keeps you in frame even if you move around while on video calls, and can run two external displays in addition to their main display, thanks to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 ports. Battery life is expected to top out at 18 hours for both the 13-inch and 15-inch models. Naturally, the Airs come with Apple's macOS Sequoia 15.4 operating system and the company's Apple Intelligence generative AI platform. That includes Apple Intelligence's writing tools that help you summarize and rephrase content, its photo editing tools, and more. Apple Intelligence is meant to help drive sales of Apple's products, but so far it's been slow going as the company continues to work to roll out the service's various features. Apple's PC rivals have hit a similar snag with Microsoft's (MSFT) AI-capable Copilot+ PCs. Despite expectations that the new category of computers would boost PC sales in the fourth quarter, market research firm Gartner said PC sales rose just 1.4% during the period and 1.3% throughout 2024.
