Apple updates bestselling MacBook Air with M4 chip, enhanced webcam
Apple (AAPL) is updating its top-selling laptop, the MacBook Air, with its latest M4 processor a day after showing off an upgraded iPad and iPad Air. The chip is expected to provide two times the performance of the M1-equipped MacBook Air and 32 times that of Intel-based Airs while using certain apps.
Available in 13-inch and 15-inch models, the M4 Airs are also $100 cheaper than their predecessors with the 13-inch versions starting at $999 rather than $1,099 and the 15-inch starting at $1,199, down from $1,299.
Apple's Mac line has outperformed its iPhone, iPad, and Wearables businesses in terms of year-over-year sales, with revenue climbing 2% in 2024. The company's iPhone segment was flat year over year, while iPad and Wearables sales fell 6% and 7%, respectively. Mac revenue also jumped more than $1 billion in Q1, while iPhone revenue declined by roughly $564 million.
The refreshed MacBook Air lineup should continue the positive trend for the segment as consumers and businesses look to upgrade to the company's latest offering.
The revamped Airs' M4 chips now feature 10-core CPUs and 10-core GPUs and support for up to 32GB of memory. That's up from the M3's 8-core CPU and 24GB of memory. In practice, that means the Airs pack more performance while still keeping their fanless design.
During a demonstration, a 15-inch Air ran a webAI's 22 billion parameter Companion large language model, rendered a 4K image using the Blender app, opened several productivity apps, and ran the game Wuthering Waves without any kind of slowdown.
The laptops also now include Apple's Center Stage camera, which keeps you in frame even if you move around while on video calls, and can run two external displays in addition to their main display, thanks to the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Battery life is expected to top out at 18 hours for both the 13-inch and 15-inch models.
Naturally, the Airs come with Apple's macOS Sequoia 15.4 operating system and the company's Apple Intelligence generative AI platform. That includes Apple Intelligence's writing tools that help you summarize and rephrase content, its photo editing tools, and more.
Apple Intelligence is meant to help drive sales of Apple's products, but so far it's been slow going as the company continues to work to roll out the service's various features.
Apple's PC rivals have hit a similar snag with Microsoft's (MSFT) AI-capable Copilot+ PCs. Despite expectations that the new category of computers would boost PC sales in the fourth quarter, market research firm Gartner said PC sales rose just 1.4% during the period and 1.3% throughout 2024.
Both the MacBook Air 13-inch and MacBook Air 15-inch hit stores March 12.

Apple Tops China's Market After Massive iPhone Discounts
June 13 - Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) led China's smartphone market in May as iPhone sales surged, driven by discounts and strong demand, according to new data from Counterpoint Research. The iPhone maker recorded its best two-month performance in the country since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Global iPhone sales climbed 15% year over year across April and May, supported by strength in China and the U.S., with additional growth in Japan, India, and the Middle East. Aggressive price cuts helped lift Apple's sales in China. The company reduced prices on its iPhone 16 lineup by up to 2,530 yuan (about $351), in a bid to compete with local players such as Huawei. Analysts note the discounts helped restore momentum but may not be a sustainable strategy over the longer term. Data from China's telecom regulator also showed a slight rise in foreign-brand smartphone shipments in April, signaling steady consumer interest despite rising competition. Counterpoint's Ivan Lam said iPhone shipments for the second quarter appear promising, although future performance may hinge on sustained demand in Apple's two largest markets. Based on the one year price targets offered by 41 analysts, the average target price for Apple Inc is $231.02 with a high estimate of $300.00 and a low estimate of $141.00. The average target implies a upside of +15.97% from the current price of $199.20. Based on GuruFocus estimates, the estimated GF Value for Apple Inc in one year is $209.54, suggesting a upside of +5.19% from the current price of $199.20. This article first appeared on GuruFocus. Police issue mosh pit warning ahead of Download festival in Leicestershire this weekend
Police are warning rock fans at this weekend's Download festival about the potential for accidental calls while in the mosh pit. Leicestershire Police issued an alert ahead of the event at Donington Park, which begins on Friday. Posting on Facebook, the force said, in previous years, they received "a rise of nearly 700 extra 999 calls" caused by energetic dancing at Download. "The tech assumed that people in mosh pits had been in a collision, causing 999 contacts and abandoned 999 calls," said the post. Police have blamed mobiles and wearable gadgets featuring technology which alerts emergency services when it suspects there has been an accident. The technology can inadvertently activate when hardcore rock, heavy metal, or punk fans are involved in aggressive styles of dancing - sometimes called "thrashing", "slam dancing" or "pogoing". Certain iPhone and Apple Watch models operate a "crash detection" feature - turned on by default - which is designed to identify a severe car crash and connect people to emergency services. Even if people are unaware that the feature has been activated, the device will call the emergency services automatically after a 30-second countdown. Some Android mobiles operate a similar service called "car crash detection". "All those calls had to be assessed, with three outbound call attempts completed to ensure there is no threat, risk or harm, taking our contact handlers away from answering true emergency calls," police added. They recommended switching on airplane mode or disabling emergency alerts on wearable tech, as well as answering any callbacks so officers know fans are safe. Read more from Sky News: Some of the reactions to the post included "don't mosh too hard" and "be wary of the mosh pit". But another user commented: "Avoid false alarms and allow police to focus on crime." Headline acts at Download are Green Day on Friday, Sleep Tolken on Saturday and Korn on Sunday.

AMD Sees AI Inference Growing 80% Annually
AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) CEO Lisa Su says AI inferencing demand is set to grow more than 80% annually over the next few years, overtaking training as the primary driver of data-center compute. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 5 Warning Sign with META. Speaking at the Advancing AI 2025 conference in San Jose, Su highlighted an explosion of models tailored to coding, healthcare and finance, and forecast that hundreds of thousands, and eventually millions of purpose-built models will drive massive GPU usage. She reminded the audience that last year AMD projected the data-center AI accelerator total addressable market would expand over 60% annually to $500 billion by 2028and now sees that number trending even higher as inference takes off. Su used the stage to unveil the MI350 GPU series, including the flagship MI355, which delivers a 35 performance leap over its predecessor and 40% more tokens per dollar versus Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) B200 when running LLMs like DeepSeek-R1 and Llama 3.3. Customers such as Meta (NASDAQ:META), xAI and Microsoft are already preparing upgrades from MI300 to MI350, highlighting growing commercial traction. Su also touted AMD's record 40% share of the AI-accelerator market, powering the world's two fastest supercomputers and serving seven of the top ten model providers with its Instinct chips. Eric Boyd, Microsoft's AI-platform VP, reinforced the momentum, praising AMD's high-capacity memory per chip as a significant advantage for LLM workloads. Why It Matters: With inferencing now the largest driver of AI compute, AMD's optimistic growth outlook and new hardware could translate into accelerated revenue and margin expansion as enterprises race to deploy ever more specialized AI models.
