'Sharjah Heritage' launches the "Sharjah Summer Camp"

Aisha Ghabish, who leads events and activities at the institute, shared, 'The camp reflects our mission to raise awareness of our national heritage among children. We want to present it in ways that are modern and interesting to them, allowing them to explore Emirati identity in an enjoyable way.' Marwa Jassim Al Mazmi, the event coordinator, noted that this year's theme is "Sharjah Summer Camp," which symbolizes traditional summer gathering places. The program includes a mix of events, activities, hands-on workshops, and field trips. Highlights feature a play titled "Towards Fifty," workshops about life in the desert, and puppet shows. On the first day, kids enjoyed a theatrical performance called "Towards Fifty: From the Glow of Pearls to the Light of Space," presented by the Rubu' Qarn Center for Theater and Performing Arts. This performance took them on an exciting journey through important moments in Emirati history. The day also included a workshop about the Bedouin lifestyle, recording a segment of the "Voice of the Summer" podcast, and a fun puppet show. Throughout the camp, children will take part in various workshops, such as spinning and weaving, folk storytelling sessions titled "The Jewel of the Tale" and "Pearls and Jewels of Tales," traditional cooking classes, and educational visits to local attractions like the Sharjah Falconers Club, the Camelicious Factory, and the Rubu' Qarn Foundation. The camp will conclude on Thursday, July 24, with a special closing ceremony that features a panel discussion called "Building a Generation That Holds Our Heads High," storytelling performances titled "The Magical World of Tales," and an open session where kids can ask questions. The event will also include a recognition ceremony where participants will receive awards and certificates for completing the camp.

SIH hosts intergenerational gathering

This special event brought together youth, adults, and elders in a shared space of learning and cultural exchange, highlighting the power of heritage to connect people across generations. Bringing Generations Together Held at the Institute's headquarters, the event saw enthusiastic participation from across the community, including heritage experts, cultural enthusiasts, and citizens of all ages. The programme fostered meaningful dialogue and shared experiences between the younger and older generations. Reviving Traditions Through Shared Experiences On the first day, participants took part in heritage-inspired activities centered on the marine environment. A traditional performance of Al-Nahma, an Emirati sea chant, immersed attendees in the memory of the sea's vital role in Emirati life—sparking engagement across age groups through storytelling and performance. Empowering Elderly Women Through Cultural Exchange The second day featured educational and interactive sessions specially designed for women from Al Asala Club. These heritage-rich activities aimed to reinforce cultural identity, celebrate inherited values, and provide a platform for elder women to share their wisdom and life experiences with younger generations in an empowering, respectful setting. A Living Bridge Between Generations Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH), stated: 'With this initiative, we aim to serve as a living bridge between generations. Heritage is not just about preservation—it's about connection. The strong turnout and interaction over both days confirm that our traditions remain deeply rooted in the hearts of the community, continuing to foster belonging and mutual understanding.' Passing on the Torch of Heritage Aisha Ghabish, Director of Events and Activities at the Institute, emphasised: 'Dedicating the second day to the women of Al Asala Club reflects our belief in inclusivity and the critical role seniors play in preserving our cultural fabric. These kinds of gatherings allow them to actively pass on their stories, experiences, and knowledge to younger participants in a way that is both engaging and impactful.' Strengthening Social Bonds Through Culture By creating space for shared experiences and meaningful interaction, this intergenerational gathering exemplifies how such initiatives can strengthen social ties and ensure the continuity of cultural heritage. It reflects Sharjah's commitment to inclusive heritage work that invites participation from all walks of life. Where the Past Meets the Future At its heart, this intergenerational gathering is a vivid reflection of Sharjah's vision: to make heritage a bridge between the past and the present, guiding future generations toward a deeper sense of identity, pride, and cultural awareness. Through these intergenerational encounters, heritage is not only remembered—it is reimagined and revitalised for the future .
