Shubman Gill set to miss Asia Cup 2025? Young India batter likely to take opening slot, says report

The Indian senior men's selection committee is likely to meet on 19 August in order to pick the squad for the Asia Cup. Ahead of the official announcement by the Ajit Agarkar-led committee, a new report by Cricbuzz has revealed that Indian Test captain Shubman Gill and pacer Mohammed Siraj may not find themselves in the squad for the upcoming T20I event. Notably, Gill scored over 750 runs in the recently concluded England Test series, making him the second-highest run-scoring Indian in a Test series behind only Sunil Gavaskar. Meanwhile, Siraj also impressed in the series as he was the highest wicket-taker and the only pacer to play all five matches. While Gill also had a great IPL 2025 season, the Cricbuzz report states that the selectors are likely to stick with the pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal is said to be a strong contender for the backup opener slot. Gill is reportedly trailing in the backup opener race unless coach Gautam Gambhir makes a strong pitch for the Test captain. Reportedly, the other batters in contention for the Asia Cup squad are Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh and skipper Suryakumar Yadav. Another batting slot is yet to be decided, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar as contenders. However, Shreyas Iyer, who had a great season with the bat this year and led Punjab Kings to the final of the IPL, may not find a slot in the squad. Meanwhile, Jitesh Sharma could be the second wicket-keeper in the side. As for bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the attack, with the other pacer spots likely to be filled by Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. Hardik Pandya could be the sole pace-bowling all-rounder in the side. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel could be the designated spinners.

BCCI to break suspense over India's next Test captain, announce squad for England tour today

BCCI Men's selection committee is all set to announce the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series and the new India captain for the five-match England series today. Notably, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee has some big choices to make, especially given the recent Test retirements announced by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The biggest suspense at the moment is who will be the next India Test captain, with most reports claiming that Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are the frontrunners for the job, while Rishabh Pant is also being considered as a possible option. While Bumrah has already captained India in the past, his recurring injury concerns could be a major factor for selectors to look at another player. Meanwhile, Gill has had a successful run captaining the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025, leading them to the playoffs this season. The young batter has also been in phenomenal touch and is currently the second-highest run scorer in the league this year. A wildcard in the India captaincy race could be KL Rahul, who has already played in England before and could provide an experienced hand to this relatively young and inexperienced side. If the selection of the India A team for the England tour is anything to go by, we could see a number of new faces in the side. The most prominent name coming up so far is left-handed batter Sai Sudharsan, who has impressed one and all with his IPL performances this year, currently holding the Orange Cap. Sudharsan could be taken to England as an opening option, given that there is a vacant slot in the absence of Rohit Sharma. Another opening option could be Abhimanyu Easwaran, but it remains to be seen if the team management has enough faith in the young batter to see him as a regular opener. Notably, Easwaran has been selected in the side in the past but is yet to make his Test debut. Among other potential names who could make a comeback are right-handed batter Karun Nair, all-rounder Shardul Thakur, and left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed. The final decision, however, will only be revealed by Ajit Agarkar during the press conference today.
