Traditional tunes win global praise

OSAKA: It was nerve-wracking moment for Muhammad Aidil Adib Muhammad Azizi and 13 of his fellow traditional music ensemble members as they walked onto the stage at the World Expo to perform for the awaiting crowd.
But all the tension melted when the crowd started to clap as the group performed traditional Malay songs, including Tari Tualang Tiga and the ever popular Cindai.
The crowd went crazy when they played two Japanese folk songs – Sakura and Mirai.
This is the first time this group of students from Akademi Sains Pendang in Kedah has performed before an international audience.
'This is an experience I will never forget. Who would have thought of this opportunity?
'We were all nervous, but our teacher told us to just perform and enjoy ourselves.
'I am glad that the crowd was supportive and enjoyed the show,' said Muhammad Aidil Adib, 15.
The students named their group Caklempong Acastra, after a traditional Minangkabau musical ensemble.
The group was invited to perform at the World Expo by the Malaysia Pavilion for a two-day show.
Two days earlier, the students competed in the International Music Talent Competition in Fukuoka and emerged second- place winners.
'We practised for two months to perfect the songs and our performance.
'Our hard work paid off.
'We are proud to bring Malaysia's name to the world stage,' beamed Muhammad Aidil Adib with pride.
Teacher Iza Harlydia Azis said while the students practised diligently for their performance at the expo and the competition, the practice sessions were scheduled at night to ensure their studies were not affected.
'We want to ensure the students strike a balance between their studies and their interests,' she added.
Iza Harlydia said for the performance in Osaka, the group wanted to showcase Kedah's identity through its folk songs as well as traditional Malay songs.
'To honour the host, we performed Japanese songs,' she added.
Iza Harlydia expressed pride with the group's success and thanked the parents for their support in this journey.
Set up in 2023, Caklempong Acastra began making a name for itself when the group emerged champions at the Kids Got Talent Malaysia Season 9.
The group has also received an invitation to participate in the audition stage of America's Got Talent Season 21.
The World Expo, a large-scale international exhibition organised every five years, is being held in Osaka until October.
It provides a platform for nations to showcase innovations, technologies and cultural achievements.
