Manchester City's Nathan Ake out for 10-11 weeks with foot injury
Manchester City defender Nathan Ake has been ruled out for 10 to 11 weeks due to his left foot injury. Manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the news in his pre-match news conference ahead of City's Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest. On Monday, Ake posted a picture of himself with his left foot in a cast on Monday and said he had undergone 'successful surgery on a (foot) fracture' which had been 'bothering (him) for months'. Ake was withdrawn at half-time of City's FA Cup fifth-round win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, having previously appeared to be struggling with an injury. Advertisement '10-11 weeks (he will be out) they said to me,' Guardiola said on Friday. 'When you have surgery it is because something wrong happened. It's important that it is done. He has struggled.' Ake has been restricted to only 18 appearances in all competitions this season, dealing with various injury issues during the campaign. This foot injury means he will also miss the Netherlands' Nations League quarter-final tie against Spain later this month, having been named in Ronald Koeman's provisional squad last week. The 30-year-old's Instagram post read: 'This has been such a frustrating season for me but I have now had a successful surgery on a fracture in my foot which has been bothering me for months and I am looking positively to the future! 'Rest and recover now, see you soon Cityzens and thank you for your support.' GO DEEPER Why Pep Guardiola thinks Nico O'Reilly has a big future: 'He's not typical of the academy players' Ake's absence adds to City's injury list in defense, with John Stones and Manuel Akanji not expected to return until approximately the end of April. City did, though, bolster their defensive ranks in the winter transfer window with the signings of centre-backs Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras. Khusanov, 21, has already made four Premier League starts and one in the Champions League, as well as featuring as a substitute in the FA Cup, while Reis, 19, has started in City's fourth- and fifth-round ties in that competition. After the trip to the City Ground, City host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on March 15 ahead of the international break. ()

City defender Ake out for 10 weeks after surgery
Manchester City defender Nathan Ake is in a race to be fit before the end of the season after undergoing surgery on a fracture in his left foot. The Netherlands international, 30, joined City in 2020 from Bournemouth and has become a key player over the previous two injuries this term have restricted him to just 18 appearances in all competitions. He was substituted at half-time during the club's FA Cup fifth-round victory over Plymouth Argyle, having aggravated a long-standing issue."When it is surgery, it is pretty serious," said City manager Pep Guardiola."When you have surgery it is because something wrong happened. It is important it was done. He has struggled."Asked when Ake may return to action, Guardiola added: "Ten or 11 weeks they [the club's medical team] said to me."That prognosis means Ake will do well to feature when City travel to Fulham for their final Premier League game of the season on 25 May. However, he should be fit for the Nations League semi-final in June, if the Netherlands qualify, and following that, City's Club World Cup challenge in the United unavailability comes during a period when other experienced defenders like John Stones and Manuel Akanji are also sidelined with injuries, as the club battle to finish inside the Champions League places. City currently sit fourth in the Premier League, a point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest, who they face on Saturday at 12:30 GMT. Chelsea and Newcastle, who are fifth and sixth respectively, are within touching distance of City.

Nathan Ake undergoes surgery as Man City turn to ‘miracle' replacements
Manchester City hope Nathan Ake will be fit to return for the Club World Cup after undergoing surgery on his injured foot. The operation was a success and the Dutch defender might be back before the end of the Premier League campaign. But he is likely to miss much of the rest of their push to qualify for the Champions League and their FA Cup quarter-final against Bournemouth. Ake came off at half-time in the fifth-round win over Plymouth on Saturday after aggravating a problem in his foot. The 30-year-old has been limited to 10 top-flight starts in an injury-hit season and his absence leaves City with only one of their four senior centre-backs, with Ruben Dias fit but Manuel Akanji and John Stones both out until at least April. But City spent more than £60m on two younger centre-backs in the January transfer window, in Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis, who could both be involved more now Ake is out. 'Now again we have central defenders out. I think we are going to miss Nathan,' Guardiola said last weekend. 'I'm so grateful and thankful to the club for bringing (January signings Abdukodir) Khusanov and Vitor (Reis), otherwise we would not have any chance to qualify for the Champions League next season or fight for the FA Cup – impossible. We would have just Ruben. 'That's why it is a miracle they are here to help us, because it happened all season, with the problems we had and still we have.' Meanwhile, the former Bristol City, Sunderland and Hibernian manager Lee Johnson is in talks to take over at Lommel, the Belgian club that is part of the City Football Group. Johnson, who has also managed Oldham and Barnsley, left his last managerial position at Fleetwood in December 2023 but has been working with some of City's young players this season and has long had admirers within CFG.
