City defender Ake out for 10 weeks after surgery
Manchester City defender Nathan Ake is in a race to be fit before the end of the season after undergoing surgery on a fracture in his left foot. The Netherlands international, 30, joined City in 2020 from Bournemouth and has become a key player over the previous two campaigns.But injuries this term have restricted him to just 18 appearances in all competitions. He was substituted at half-time during the club's FA Cup fifth-round victory over Plymouth Argyle, having aggravated a long-standing issue."When it is surgery, it is pretty serious," said City manager Pep Guardiola."When you have surgery it is because something wrong happened. It is important it was done. He has struggled."Asked when Ake may return to action, Guardiola added: "Ten or 11 weeks they [the club's medical team] said to me."That prognosis means Ake will do well to feature when City travel to Fulham for their final Premier League game of the season on 25 May. However, he should be fit for the Nations League semi-final in June, if the Netherlands qualify, and following that, City's Club World Cup challenge in the United States.Ake's unavailability comes during a period when other experienced defenders like John Stones and Manuel Akanji are also sidelined with injuries, as the club battle to finish inside the Champions League places. City currently sit fourth in the Premier League, a point behind third-placed Nottingham Forest, who they face on Saturday at 12:30 GMT. Chelsea and Newcastle, who are fifth and sixth respectively, are within touching distance of City.

'A big number of the top teams in the world will be competing in this tournament and I can assure you, we're going to give it our best shot. We're going there to win it.' City were the last team to win the Club World Cup in its old guise in December 2023, but that only required them to win two games in the space of four days. The new quadrennial tournament is a different proposition, featuring 32 teams and lasting a month, following a format used for the traditional World Cup. City have been placed in Group G for this summer's edition in the United States alongside Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. Their regular Champions League foes Real Madrid could lie in wait in the first knockout round. Other notable sides involved include newly-crowned European champions Paris St Germain and the beaten finalists Inter Milan, Premier League rivals Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund. There are 12 European entrants in total with six from South America, six from South America, four each from Africa and Asia, five from North America and one from Oceania. Brazil has the most participants of any one country with four. The tournament, which begins on June 14, has had plenty of detractors, particularly from Europe, and its success remains to be seen. For City the message is now clear, however. They would rather be involved than not. 'It's an honour,' Guardiola said. 'It means in the last seasons we have done really well. It's a new competition for us and I'm looking forward to it.'

Can Estevao Willian play against Chelsea in Club World Cup?
Estevao Willian will have his final act as a Palmeiras player at the Club World Cup before making his blockbuster move to Chelsea. Last year, the Blues saw off interest from almost every elite club in Europe to secure the services of a player regarded as Brazil's most promising talent since Neymar. Chelsea paid an £29million which could eventually rise £57million – but it could all be worth every penny. Having turned 18 in April, Estevao is now permitted to make his move to London this summer. Before that, he will be part of the Palmeiras side competing in the revamped Club World Cup – a competition also featuring his new club. The competition is underway this weekend with Palmeiras in action against Portuguese giants Porto on Sunday night. Palmeiras have been placed in Group A of the competition alongside Al Ahly, Inter Miami and Porto. Chelsea meanwhile find themselves in Group D alongside ES Tunis, Los Angeles FC and Flamengo. There is a possibility Chelsea and Palmeiras can meet at the quarter-final stage of the Club World Cup. Should both progress as group winners or runners-up and beat their last 16 opponents, they are possible opponents for each other at the last eight stage. Those matches in question will take place on Friday 4 July in Philadelphia and Saturday 5 July in Atlanta. With Estevao registered for the Palmeiras squad, there would be nothing to stop him from lining up against the players he will be playing alongside side as early as next month. Estevao's agent Andre Cury said in April: 'Yes, he's arriving [at Chelsea] after the Club World Cup. He's a world-class player. Very good. A guy who's going to make history here.' New signings Liam Delap, Mamadou Sarr and Dario Essugo are in the Chelsea squad for the Club World Cup and will be joined by Estevao later in the summer when pre-season gets started. Chelsea routinely send their young stars out on loan, with Estevao's countryman Andrey Santos enjoying a superb campaign with Strasbourg last season. But the Brazil international is expected to be part of Enzo Maresca's first-team squad heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
