Massachusetts State Police Lt. hit by motorcycle transferred to rehab, hopes to return to work

A motorcade of police motorcycles, cruisers, and an ambulance made its way into Spaulding Rehab in Cambridge on Tuesday afternoon with some fanfare for one Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant. Inside the ambulance was Lt. Donald Bossi, the state police trooper who on June 23 was hit by a motorcycle right outside the Revere Beach police barracks, and sent flying 40 feet. The trooper's condition has been touch-and-go, with organ issues, broken bones, and more. He has been in the ICU at Mass General Hospital since late June. Prosecutors have described his survival as a miracle. The motorcycle had allegedly been stolen and driven by 18-year-old Akram El Moukhtari, who is facing charges in connection with the incident. Lt. Bossi was brought out of the ambulance on a stretcher and was flanked by colleagues who greeted him with warm handshakes. He thanked them all for their support. "I'm just lucky to be alive," he told reporters as he was wheeled into the rehab center. "And my goal is to get back to work by next summer — maybe sooner." The staff at Spaulding shares that goal and said that a full recovery is possible. The Cambridge location of the rehabilitation center deals with more long-term, complex recoveries like Bossi's. "He's very motivated, so you know it could be anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on what he needs… But he will be here until he's able to fully recover, and go home," said Joanne Fucile, the Associate Chief Nurse at the rehab center. Bossi will undergo intensive therapy, with up to three hours per day of occupational and physical therapy. Fucile says his go-getter attitude is already a step in the right direction towards success.

Massachusetts State Police trooper still in ICU 33 days after he was nearly killed in Revere hit-and-run

A Massachusetts State Police station commander is still in intensive care, more than a month after he was nearly killed in a hit-and-run outside of the Revere Barracks. Lieutenant Donald Bossi was struck by a stolen motorcycle in front of the barracks on Revere Beach Boulevard back on June 23. He was thrown 40 feet down the street. Investigators said 18-year-old Akram El Moukhtari of Revere hit Bossi, got off the motorcycle and ran away. He turned himself in to police later that night. Bossi was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in critical condition. El Moukhtari hid in court the next day as he pleaded not guilty to several charges at his arraignment. He's been held since then on $50,000 cash bail. He was brought back to court Friday to face an additional charge of illegal possession of ammunition, after police said they found 100 rounds of ammunition in his bedroom during a search after his arrest. During the arraignment, prosecutor John Verner had an update on Bossi's condition. "He suffered catastrophic injuries, 33 days and counting in the ICU with no end in sight, potentially two more months in the hospital. He's been battling infections, kidney problems, internal organ problems, his pelvis was broken. Just really, really bad injuries," Verner said Friday. "It's a miracle Lt. Bossi is still with us." The judge ordered $3,500 to be added to the original $50,000 cash bail, based on the new ammunition charge. "It's a bail that his family can't make," El Moukhtari's attorney said of the new $53,500 total. El Moukhtari's next hearing in the case is scheduled for August 22 via Zoom.

Massachusetts State trooper hit and injured by moped driving through large crowd near Revere Beach

A moped driver from Everett was arrested late on July 4th in Revere, Massachusetts after police said he struck a state trooper who was trying to de-escalate an aggressive crowd. It happened shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday night, not too far from Revere Beach. Police said a large crowd setting off illegal fireworks grew larger and became aggressive. Revere officers and Massachusetts State troopers were then sent in to de-escalate the chaos. While this was happening, police said a moped drove through the crowd and struck a state trooper. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, 34-year-old Deshakraaun Abdullahmuhammud, was arrested at the scene. He faces several charges, including driving with a suspended license, assault with dangerous weapon and negligent operation. Deshakraaun Abdullahmuhammud in a mugshot. Massachusetts State Police This comes weeks after another state trooper was seriously injured when he was struck by a motorcyclist near Revere Beach. On June 23, police said 18-year-old Akram El Moukhtari was driving a stolen motorcycle when he crashed into Lieutenant Donald Bossi, who was standing near his cruiser on Revere Beach Boulevard. Bossi was taken to the hospital in critical condition. At El Moukhtari's arraignment, it was revealed that Bossi had surgery to put his pelvic bone back into place. He also has a broken nose and several cuts that needed stitches. On Saturday, State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble said Bossi remains in critical condition. El Moukhtari was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail and is due back in court on July 18.

Massachusetts state trooper nearly killed in Revere hit-and-run says he'll be back "stronger than ever"

The Massachusetts State Police station commander who was hit by a stolen motorcycle in Revere and nearly killed earlier this week said he'll be back "stronger than ever." Lieutenant Donald Bossi was standing near his cruiser outside the barracks on Revere Beach Boulevard Monday evening when he was run down and sent flying 40 feet down the street. The motorcyclist ran away. Police later identified him as 18-year-old Akram El Moukhtari of Revere. His father helped turn him into police a few hours after the crash. At El Moukhtari's arraignment Tuesday, prosecutor John Verner said "Lt. Bossi is lucky to be alive." Bossi had surgery to put his pelvic bone back into place. He also has a broken nose and several cuts that needed stitches. "A long road ahead of me" "The rest of my injuries will not require surgery, just time," he said in a statement released Thursday. "My State Police family has been incredible and for that I am eternally grateful. I still have a long road ahead of me but the support network that I have will help me get through this." His family released a photo of him in his bed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Lieutenant Donald Bossi Bossi family Verner said there is video of the collision and that El Moukhtari admitted to hitting Bossi. El Moukhtari pleaded not guilty to several charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Twenty troopers were in court Tuesday to show their support for Bossi. "I am a fighter" "I can't stress enough how much all the outpouring of kindness means to me and my family. I am a fighter. It may take many months, but I will be back, stronger than ever." El Moukhtari is being held on $50,000 bail. His father said the teen is "sick mentally" and "can't control himself." El Moukhtari is due back in court July 18.

Massachusetts State Police identify station commander nearly killed in Revere hit-and-run

Massachusetts State Police have identified the station commander who was hit by a stolen motorcycle and nearly killed outside of the Revere Barracks. Lieutenant Donald Bossi was standing near his cruiser in front of the barracks on Revere Beach Boulevard just before 5 p.m. Monday when he was run down and severely hurt. Akram El Moukhtari, 18, of Revere, was arraigned on several charges in the case Tuesday as Bossi had surgery. According to investigators, El Moukhtari was riding a stolen motorcycle on the boulevard along with his friend, who was on a moped. A state trooper allegedly saw them "popping wheelies" and running a red light, so he called the barracks. Prosecutor says video shows crash That's when, police say, video from the scene showed Bossi get out of his cruiser and walk around to the back. Seconds later, he was hit. "The defendant, on his motorcycle at a high rate of speed, literally plows and runs the lieutenant over," prosecutor John Verner said, "pushing and throwing him 40 feet from the area of the crash." El Moukhtari hid behind a door at his arraignment in Chelsea District Court Tuesday. Verner said the teen admitted to two people that he saw the trooper in the road and made no attempt to stop or avoid hitting Bossi. Police said El Moukhtari got off the motorcycle and ran away. Bossi was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in critical condition. A Massachusetts State Police lieutenant was hit by this motorcycle in Revere, June 23, 2025. CBS Boston "Lucky to be alive" "Lt. Bossi is lucky to be alive," Verner said. He ended up with a broken and separated pelvis and cuts on his arm, head and face. Bossi had surgery Tuesday. "The base of his nose was broken to the extent it was pushed in and cracked the orbital bone in his face," Verner said. Around 8:45 p.m. El Moukhtari turned himself in to police with his father. Verner said the moped rider came to the barracks and told police El Moukhtari called him and admitted to hitting the trooper and running off. Both were taken into custody. With his parents and several troopers in court, El Moukhtari pleaded not guilty to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, receiving a stolen motor vehicle and leaving the scene of personal injury at his arraignment. His attorney said she believes the video shows El Moukhtari panicked when he saw the trooper in the road and didn't have time to swerve and get out of the way. El Moukhtari was ordered held on $50,000 cash bail. He's due back in court July 18. Teen in court hours before crash The prosecutor said El Moukhtari was in juvenile court Monday morning, just six hours before the crash, for an open case there regarding a fight at Revere High School. Verner said the victim didn't show up, the case was dropped and El Moukhtari was free to leave. Massachusetts State Police statement The head of the state police, Colonel Geoffrey Noble, issued this statement Tuesday: "The Massachusetts State Police would like to express our appreciation for the public support of Lieutenant Donald Bossi, his family, and our Department in the aftermath of this terrible incident. Yesterday's senseless crash could have proven fatal if not for the resilience and extraordinary strength of Lieutenant Bossi, and the care he received on scene, in transit, and at the hospital. Our community is safer because of the many Troopers who set their feelings aside in the aftermath of this event to do their jobs and meet the moment by apprehending the fleeing suspect. We remain very grateful for these positive developments."
