New video: Akron police confront suspect using stolen SUV as battering ram
AKRON, Ohio (WJW) – Newly released video shows the chaotic scene that unfolded in May when Akron police confronted a suspect who was using a stolen SUV to ram into an apartment and then crashed into police cruisers as officers tried to stop the bizarre attack. FOX 8 News requested dash camera and body video of the incident on May 5. Akron police released the video on Tuesday. Dozens of video clips show the chaos that officers encountered. They responded to the call about a suspect using the stolen SUV to intentionally crash into a car and force the vehicle through the wall of an apartment on Tate Terrace, rented by the mother of a woman he once dated. As the man continued to ram into the apartment, he hit the gas meter, causing a gas leak. I-Team: Police chief speaks out on 'chaos' at Cleveland Heights City Hall When the first officers arriving at the scene attempted to stop the suspect, Mikal Gamble 31, of Warrensville Heights, used the SUV to crash into their cruiser several times before speeding away. After a wild chase through the streets of the surrounding neighborhood, the officers caught up with Gamble, but he continued to use the SUV as a weapon and backed up into their cruiser at a high speed and drove away. When they caught up, he used the SUV to hit them again. Gamble once again drove away, but the pursuit came to an end when he tried to turn around in a driveway. Officers used their cruiser to crash into the SUV and the impact pinned the vehicle against a tree. They then moved in and arrested Gamble. As a result of his use of the SUV as a weapon and the injuries suffered by the officers, he is facing charges that include multiple counts of assault on a law enforcement officer. 2 in custody after pursuit ends on I-90: North Olmsted police He was also charged with inducing panic, failure to comply with police, vandalism, criminal damaging and obstructing official business. Detectives contend that Gamble stole the SUV and used it as a battering ram to seek revenge against the woman he once dated by destroying the apartment she shared with her mother. Investigators said it was the quick and aggressive response by the officers that stopped the attack before anyone at the apartment complex was injured or killed. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
