Akshaye Khanna's untold journey: From star kid setbacks to Bollywood's most underrated powerhouse

In the world of Bollywood, where nepotism often opens doors, not every star kid's journey is paved with gold. Akshaye Khanna , the son of legendary actor Vinod Khanna , had all the makings of a Bollywood success story — a powerful lineage, a grand launch, and early exposure to the film industry. But his story is far more complex — and far more compelling. A high-profile debut that didn't deliver Akshaye made his big-screen debut in 1997 with Himalay Putra, a film that was meant to establish him as the next big thing in Bollywood. Despite its promising setup and backing from an influential film family, the movie failed to leave a mark at the box office. Breakthrough with Border changed everything Later that same year, his fortunes took a turn with J.P. Dutta's Border. The war epic became a major commercial success and gave Akshaye the breakthrough he desperately needed. His restrained yet impactful performance stood out even in a crowded ensemble, marking the beginning of a career built on solid acting chops. Not just a hero — a versatile performer Over the years, Akshaye Khanna proved his range through diverse roles. He was the soulful romantic in Taal, the charming rebel in Dil Chahta Hai, the cunning husband in Humraaz, and the stylish antagonist in Race. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Southampton: £19.99 Will-Writing Service Legacy Wills & Estate Planning Undo He also delivered power-packed performances in critically acclaimed films like Mom, Ittefaq, Section 375, and the blockbuster Drishyam 2. In his most recent outing, Chhava, the film reportedly grossed over Rs 800 crore worldwide, yet again cementing Akshaye's status as a compelling on-screen presence. A personal life cloaked in mystery Despite his cinematic success, Akshaye's personal life has always remained a mystery. Few know that he was once romantically linked to Karisma Kapoor. Reports suggest that Randhir Kapoor had even proposed a marriage between the two, but Babita Kapoor allegedly declined, wanting Karisma to prioritise her booming career. Akshaye Khanna turns 48: Old video of actor dancing with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan goes VIRAL A bizarre what-if in Bollywood history Among the most bizarre rumours surrounding Akshaye is his reported desire to marry the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who was 27 years older than him. While unconfirmed, the story continues to circulate as one of Bollywood's strangest behind-the-scenes tales. The enigma of Akshaye Khanna Now in his 50s, Akshaye remains one of Hindi cinema's most elusive yet respected actors. He shuns public attention, avoids interviews, and remains unmarried — but each time he returns to the big screen, he reminds audiences of his unmatched talent and quiet charisma. When Akshaye Khanna was hopeful to find love but not mentally prepared to get married: ‘I don't know if I can do the adjustments…'

Actor Akshaye Khanna, son of veteran star Vinod Khanna, recently made headlines when he revealed he doesn't want to get married at all. During the promotion of his recent film Chhavaa, Akshaye Khanna shared how he thinks he is not 'marriage material' and wants full control over his life. However, there was a time when the actor was hopeful to find the right girl and be married to her. In an old interview, the Dil Chahta Hai star had spoken in length about his marriage plans and the kind of girl he is looking for to settle down with. Speaking to Anuradha Prasad, the actor complained how it is not him who is avoiding marriage but he is unable to find the right partner. He said, 'Life partner milna toh chahiye. You need to find the right girl for yourself before deciding to get married. It is wrong to marry for the sake of it, thinking family is putting pressure on you and you did it. That's wrong.' Akshaye Khanna said that he doesn't have any specific criteria for the girl of his dreams as he believes in falling in love with the totality of the person than just a single trait. 'I don't have anything specific that I need in my partner. When you fall in love, you fall in love with the totality of the person. It can't be one reason. I have never received this feeling from anyone who would make me want to spend the rest of my life with her. It has not happened yet.' However, the actor seemed hopeful to find his lady love. 'I am hoping it will happen one day,' said the actor. He shared, 'I don't think I am mentally prepared for it. Neither do I know if I can do the adjustment. But, I guess when a person falls in love, they can do it. I will never settle for an arranged marriage. It has to be love. I will be able to do all the compromises that people usually do in a marriage is only when I am madly in love with that person. Otherwise, it won't be possible at all.' Recently, when talking to Hindustan Times, Akshaye seemed like he has dropped the idea of getting married at all. The 50-year-old actor shared, 'I don't see myself getting married. I am not marriage material. I am not cut out for that kind of life. It is a commitment, but a drastic lifestyle change. Marriage changes everything. I want full control over my life. When you share you life with somebody else, you can't have full control. You have to give a lot of control away. You share each other's lives.' He added, 'I am not willing to give up. I don't think even in the future I will be willing to do that.' Akshaye Khanna was once reported to be dating Karisma Kapoor. The couple were also set to get married when Karisma's mother Babita expressed her disagreement as she wanted her daughter to focus on her career. She allegedly didn't approve of Akshaye Khanna's career graph, ending their relationship.

Aamir Khan had two conditions before signing Dil Chahta Hai, says Farhan Akhtar: ‘I went to him because I had no choice'

When Farhan Akhtar was trying to cast his debut film Dil Chahta Hai, he met a few actors who just rejected his proposal. But once he met with Akshaye Khanna, there was a ray of hope. Farhan shared, at the recently concluded Waves Summit, that Akshaye was the first actor to come on board out of the three leading stars and at that time, Akshaye was going to play the role of Aakash, the role that was eventually played by Aamir Khan. Farhan shared that when he met Aamir, it was for Sid's role, that was eventually played by Akshaye, but Aamir placed his condition before the first time filmmaker. Calling Akshaye an 'incredible guy who has a lot of integrity', he recalled that he met the actor for Aakash's role and he readily agreed. 'I never thought Aamir would say yes so I never went to him. It sounds frivolous and kind of patronising now, forgive me because that's not my intention, but I went to him eventually because I had no choice. And I went with the feeling that he is going to say no but since I haven't met him, let me go and meet him,' he shared. Farhan said that after Aamir met with him, he liked the film but he had two conditions before he could come on board. 'He said I will do this film but I have some conditions. So the dialogues were in English at that time so he said that you get the dialogue draft in Hindi because right now, you have written it in English. I want to know if this humour will work in Hindi. He said if I like the Hindi draft, I don't want to play Sid, I want to play Aakash,' he shared. Farhan prepared his draft in Hindi and Aamir liked it but the next obstacle was how he would tell Akshaye about this, as the actor had already agreed to play Aakash. 'I met Akshaye and I told him 'Aamir is really keen to do the film but he wants to do Aakash'. Akshaye said 'you came and met me and told me you want me to be Aakash. If you tell me you want me to be Sid, I don't care. I will do any role but I want to be in this movie,' he shared and added, 'I am always indebted to him for being so gracious.' Dil Chahta Hai also starred Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia and Preity Zinta.

When Akshaye Khanna said he doesn't want to work with his father Vinod Khanna: ‘There are some actors who just wash you away on screen'

Vinod Khanna passed away on this day, April 27, eight years ago in 2017. The legendary actor is best known for films like Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), and Qurbani (1980). A posthumous recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018), he's also served as a politician, most notably as the Minister of State for External Affairs in 2003-2004. Despite his illustrious and expansive career, a biopic hasn't been made on Vinod Khanna. Even his sons — Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna — who are actors as well, haven't considered the idea. In an interview with IANS in 2017, Akshaye reasoned, 'I haven't ever thought about it so I can't say. But I think biopics by nature, I suppose as accurate as they can be, the better for an actor,' he said. 'It's very challenging as well as risky for an actor to portray a real life character because you are portraying some one who actually existed. So, it becomes really difficult,' added Akshaye, who said one must 'think 10 times' before playing a real-life character. Akshaye has played a real-life character, Hiralal Gandhi, Mahatama Gandhi's son, in Feroz Abbas Khan's Gandhi, My Father (2007). He was most recently seen as yet another historical character, Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, in Laxman Utekar's blockbuster period war drama Chhaava earlier this year. Perhaps Akshaye Khanna's reticence to play his father Vinod Khanna on screen could also be attributed to his intimidation of matching up to his dad when they worked together in Akshaye's debut film, Pankaj Parashar's 1997 romance Himalay Putra. 'There are certain people whom you shouldn't work with. My dad is one of them. Amitabh Bachchan is another. To stand in the same frame as them confidently is impossible,' Akshaye said in a 2008 interview with IANS. 'They've such an overpowering screen presence. It's very difficult to match my father on screen. It's that quality – either you have it, or you don't have it. Very frankly, I don't have it. I just don't have that kind of presence. There are some actors who just wash you away on screen. My dad is one of them,' added Akshaye. Akshaye Khanna shared screen space with Amitabh Bachchan in Milan Luthria's 2004 action thriller Deewaar: Let's Bring Our Heroes Back, an ensemble that also starred Sanjay Dutt, Kay Kay Menon, and Amrita Rao among others. Interestingly, Akshaye's father Vinod Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan had a memorable onscreen partnership. They starred together in films like Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and Reshma Aur Shera, among others. Vinod Khanna was diagnosed with advanced bladder cancer in 2017. He died in Mumbai. He was survived by his wife Kavita Daftary and four kids, including Akshaye and Rahul.
