Abu Dhabi International Book Fair discusses role of educational institutions in raising awareness of intra-Islamic dialogue

3 May 2025 20:03 ABU DHABI (WAM)As part of its cultural and intellectual programme at the 34th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, the Muslim Council of Elders hosted a seminar titled 'The Role of Educational Institutions in Raising Awareness of the Importance of Intra-Islamic Dialogue,' featuring Dr. Khalifa Al-Dhaheri, Chancellor of Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, and Dr. Tarek Shawki, former Minister of Education and Technical Education of the Arab Republic of his opening remarks, Dr. Al-Dhaheri emphasised that the humanities represent the intellectual foundation upon which nations and civilizations are built, as they encompass values, ethics, and profound meanings. He noted that contemporary humanities encompass fields such as sociology, psychology, and philosophy, and are essential to civilizational development, underscoring the need for their active presence in today's cultural and intellectual Al-Dhaheri underscored that intra-Islamic dialogue constitutes a vital pillar for fostering understanding among various Islamic schools of thought. He highlighted the importance of moving beyond historical conflicts that have claimed innocent lives in favor of a unifying discourse rooted in shared values. 'Values such as mercy and justice are common to all religions and schools of thought,' he said, 'and these values must be instilled in younger generations. The voice of peace must rise above all others, and we must continue the journey of values and dialogue without being swayed by voices of discord.'He commended the efforts of the Muslim Council of Elders in promoting a culture of dialogue and human coexistence. He stated that the Council has emerged as a global leader in dialogue, both between religions and within Islamic schools of thought. 'The Council played a pivotal role supporting the Document on Human Fraternity—one of the most important documents in the history of inter-religious dialogue—signed in Abu Dhabi in 2019, marking a major milestone in strengthening Christian–Muslim relations,' he his part, Dr. Tarek Shawki emphasised that developing educational curricula must begin with the early inculcation of values in childhood. He pointed to the rapid changes of the modern era and the widening generational gap as one of the most significant challenges of our time. 'We cannot apply the curricula of the past to Generation Alpha,' he explained, 'and it is essential that teachers and parents embrace new educational approaches before expecting students to do so.' Dr. Shawki called for a comprehensive review of the materials presented to children and for expanding initiatives that reinforce identity and language. 'Investing in human capital is the most important form of investment,' he stated, 'and we need a conscious and responsible media to support these efforts.'

ABU DHABI: The UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation has announced that the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, round three for Gi competitors, will take place here from May 2 to 4 at the Mubadala Arena in Zayed Sports City. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The UAEJJF event will feature a range of competitors, starting with the youth (under-18), adults, and masters categories on the first day. The second day will have the under-14 and under-16 competitors, and will conclude on the third day with the under-12 athletes. Mohamed Salem Al-Dhaheri, vice chairman of the UAEJJF, highlighted the successes of the championship which 'embody the vision of the wise leadership in supporting and developing the sport of jiu-jitsu.' The high levels demonstrated by the athletes 'reflects the championship's position as a leading platform for honing skills and preparing future champions. 'Since its inception, the championship, which bears a name close to our hearts, has received sizable interest from various segments of the community, reflecting the growing popularity of jiu-jitsu in Emirati society,' he added. 'The championship also represents a unique opportunity for families to encourage their sons and daughters and enjoy an exciting sporting atmosphere.' 'The tournament reflects the values of social cohesion, instils a culture of sports in society and contributes to building strong generations grounded in self-confidence, belonging and a sense of responsibility.' Al-Dhaheri said the championship was a 'well-structured tournament with a competitive ranking system for athletes in place. 'This system enhances competition between clubs and academies, raises competitor efficiency, and provides incentives that drive interest in the tournament and intensify the competition for top rankings and titles.'

UAE's National MMA Championship 3 underway in Dubai

DUBAI: The UAE's National MMA Championship 3, organized by the UAE's Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, began on Saturday at Shabab Al-Ahli Club in Dubai in front of a large crowd, and featured young talent representing clubs and academies nationwide. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport The opening day included bouts in the Youth D (10-11 years), Youth C (12-13) and Youth B (14-15) categories, while Sunday sees the tournament's conclusion with competitions in Youth A (16-17) and Adult (18+) categories. Mohamed Salem Al-Dhaheri, vice chairman of the UAE's Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation, said: 'We are proud of the strong performances we saw today and the impressive participation of our sons and daughters, especially those who are just starting their journey. 'These categories are the foundation for the future of the sport and show that the federation's efforts to develop talent are paying off.' Al-Dhaheri added that the high level of public engagement, organization, and quality of the fights reflected the growing importance of the championship locally, and continued efforts to provide the ideal environment for developing a generation of athletes capable of succeeding. Zakaria Bichi, coach of Primal Gym Abu Dhabi, said: 'We're taking part in this edition with seven athletes, and several of them have won gold medals thanks to strong preparation and serious commitment during training. 'This championship is a key milestone in their careers, especially when it comes to building confidence and gaining experience. We've seen how mixed martial arts in the country continues to grow every year. This is a result of the federation's ongoing commitment to organising high-level events that help shape a new generation of champions.' Suhair Almarzooqi, the mother of 14-year-old Hamad Alsaboori from ADMA Academy, said: 'We're proud to see our children take part in a tournament at this level as it helps them improve their athletic skills, build character, and boosts their confidence. 'Sports today are more than just physical activity: They are a powerful way to teach discipline, responsibility, and the importance of working towards goals. 'We're grateful to the federation for organizing this championship, which gives our children the right environment to explore their potential and make the most of their free time in a way that benefits them and supports their future.' Emirati Hamda Ali Khalfan Almutwa, of Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai, who won gold in her division at the event, said: 'Since I began my career in martial arts I have dreamed of this moment. Winning the gold medal today makes me feel proud and gives me even more motivation to train and improve. Thank you to everyone who supported me. I hope to be a role model for all girls who dream of reaching the podium.'

ABU DHABI: The second round of Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship will take place this weekend (Feb. 8-9) at Al-Nasr Club in Dubai.
