Pakistan launches a new security operation against militants near Afghan border

Volunteers offer water to internally displaced people, who fled from their homes when security forces launched a targetted operation against militants, at a highway near Khar, the main town of Bajaur, a northwestern Pakistani district bordering Afghanistan, Monday, Aug. 11, 2025. - AP KHAR, Pakistan: Pakistani security forces have launched a "targetted operation' against militants in a restive north-western district bordering Afghanistan, displacing tens of thousands of residents who fled to safer areas, officials said Tuesday (Aug 12). There was no formal announcement of the launch of the offensive in Bajaur, a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, but a government administrator, Saeed Ullah, said it was not a large-scale operation and only insurgent hideouts were being hit to avoid civilian casualties. Another government administrator, Shahhid Ali, said the number of displaced people had rapidly increased to nearly 100,000. On Tuesday, the provincial government in the northwest said it will give 50,000 rupees (US$175) in compensation to each displaced family in Bajaur, where volunteers from the Al-Khidmat Foundation, a charity, were also seen distributing food among displaced families. Among those displaced is Gul Wali, 50, who said it was the second time that he had been forced to flee his home, as he sat in a government shelter, "although we have been told we will return to our village soon.' Wali said most homes in his village in the Mamund district were destroyed during the previous military offensive in 2009. "We do not know what will happen to our homes this time,' he said. Residents reported that security forces, backed by helicopters, struck militant hideouts in the mountainous areas along the Afghan border. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief Zulfiqar Hameed said the operation was ongoing. However, no information was available about any casualties among troops or insurgents. The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, are a separate group but a close ally of the Afghan Taliban, who seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, as US and NATO troops were in the final stages of their pullout from the country after 20 years of war. Many TTP leaders and fighters have found sanctuary in Afghanistan and have been living there openly since the Taliban takeover, and some have crossed the border back into Bajaur and carried out attacks. Pakistan also carried out a major operation in Bajaur against Pakistani and foreign militants in 2009, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Pakistan claimed victory in 2010, when displaced people were allowed to return to homes. - AP

Pakistan dispatches another 40 tons of relief goods for Gaza

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has dispatched 40 tons of humanitarian aid for the war-affected people of Gaza, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday, amid continuing Israeli strikes on the Palestinian territory. The development came as the Palestinian health ministry said hospitals in the Gaza Strip had received the remains of 51 Palestinians over the past 24 hours who were killed in Israeli strikes, bringing the Palestinian death toll from the 18-month-old Israel-Hamas war to 52,243. The overall toll includes nearly 700 bodies for which the documentation process was recently completed, the ministry said in its latest update. The daily toll includes bodies retrieved from the rubble after earlier strikes. Pakistan's NDMA said the latest shipment, which is the 15th aid consignment for Gaza and the overall 26th sent to the Middle East, was sent as part of Pakistan's ongoing humanitarian efforts. 'The latest consignment, sent in collaboration with Al-Khidmat Foundation, comprises approximately 20 tons of medicine, 5 tons of hygiene kits and 15 tons of tents,' the NDMA said. 'The aid was transported via a chartered flight from Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, to Amman (Jordon). Royal Medical Services Jordan will receive for onward distribution to the people of Palestine.' Israel ended its months-long ceasefire with Hamas by launching a surprise bombardment on March 18, and has been carrying out daily waves of strikes since then. Ground forces have expanded a buffer zone and encircled the southern city of Rafah, and now control around 50 percent of the territory. Israel has also sealed off the territory's 2 million Palestinians from all imports, including food and medicine, for nearly 60 days. Aid groups say supplies will soon run out and that thousands of children are malnourished. Pakistan, which does not have diplomatic ties with Israel, has consistently condemned Israeli military actions and called for the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian territory. The South Asian country has dispatched a total of 1,518 tons of relief aid exclusively for Palestine, according to the NDMA. Overall, Pakistan has dispatched 2,045 tons of humanitarian aid, including 416 tons for Lebanon and 111 tons for Syria. 'The Government of Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to standing with the people of Palestine and will continue to provide humanitarian assistance based on the evolving needs of those affected by the ongoing crisis,' the NDMA said.

Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Al-Khidmat Foundation, sent its 24th relief consignment to Gaza to El-Arish airport in North Sinai. The Pakistani embassy in Cairo said, "Upon directives of the Prime Minister, a special aircraft from Pakistan carrying 55 tons of relief supplies landed at El-Arish International Airport, Egypt, today. The relief consignment includes bell and winterized tents and tarpaulin sheets." The consignment was handed to the Egyptian Red Crescent Society to dispatch to its Palestinian counterpart inside Gaza. "Pakistan will continue to stand with the Palestinian brothers and sisters and provide much-needed humanitarian assistance. We are thankful to Egypt for their crucial support. More consignments from Pakistan's government and people are on their way and will be delivered soon to the Palestinians inside Gaza." An official Egyptian source said on Friday that since the beginning of Israel's genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Egypt had facilitated the entry into Gaza of nearly 70 percent of the humanitarian aid trucks designated to help relieve the Palestinians in the strip. Similarly, United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said that until 6 February, more than 10,000 aid trucks entered Gaza through Egypt's various border crossings with the strip since the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel became effective on 19 January.
