A First For KDN:Passport Booth With Two-hour Renewals At Johor MADANI Carnival

JOHOR BAHRU, May 24 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) has introduced a passport renewal booth for the first time, aimed at making it a breeze for citizens to obtain their identification document on the spot. Its deputy secretary-general, Yusniza Yusuf said that previously, the documentation process for passports, especially when applied for online, could take up to three days. She explained that with the booth set up during the 2025 Johor MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR), the public can renew passports immediately, provided they bring along their expired passports. 'KDN previously only conducted outreach programmes through government-organised events, using mobile buses or setting up booths for the National Registration Department (NRD) for matters related to MyKid, identity cards, birth certificates and death certificates. 'After observing the high demand for document processing at the NRD, we decided to extend our outreach to include the Immigration Department for passport-related matters for the first time,' she said today. She explained that the people of Johor are most fortunate as they do not have to wait long to obtain their passports after renewing them at the booth, which has been open for three days starting yesterday while today should see a frenzied beeline to the KDN booth after proving to be a hit. 'If the response to this renewal service (passport) is positive, we at the Home Affairs Ministry will continue this effort in other programmes, including the upcoming PMR,' she said. At 2025 Johor PMR, Yusniza also mentioned that the KDN is providing reference services related to the publication of the Al-Quran, determining whether they are approved for printing or not. 'The public can also exchange Al-Quran with doubtful or unauthorised printing -- including those without KDN's approval (stamp and hologram sticker) -- for new ones that have been officially permitted by the ministry.

DPM Zahid: Allow teachers to return to primary role as educators by overhauling workload

The Deputy Prime Minister cited this as among five key directions to rebuild Malaysia's education ecosystem. 'Teachers must be return to their original roles. Use artificial intelligence (AI) and automation wisely to minimise routine tasks and optimise teachers' precious time with their students,' Ahmad Zahid said in his keynote address at the National Teachers' Day 2025 celebration here today. He emphasised that meaningful education reform must be grounded in a long-term vision and guided by teachers. 'The national education direction must be constantly refreshed. We cannot be content with current achievements. The education system must continue to evolve to ensure that every Malaysian child receives an education that is relevant, balanced, and meaningful. 'The government is committed to driving change that is not merely reactive, but anchored in a long-term vision. We are taking strategic steps, building the ecosystem, and implementing plans to ensure our education future remains resilient in the face of changing times,' he said. He stressed that priority must be given to ensure inclusive and equitable change. With a record RM64.1 billion allocated under Budget 2025 — the highest in Malaysia's history — he pointed out the funding must not remain as figures on paper but must reach the schools, teachers, and students who need it most. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding the welfare of all educators, including those often overlooked such as Kafa (Al-Quran and Fardhu Ain Class) teachers, tahfiz instructors, educators with disabilities, and special education teachers. These groups frequently go beyond their basic duties yet are too often left out of recognition and support systems, he said. He also called for digital transformation to be accelerated in a fair and balanced manner. The Deputy Prime Minister said digital literacy among both teachers and students must be strengthened, and all teachers should be equipped to integrate technology in their teaching, while students must be guided to become ethical and proficient digital users. He stressed it is also vital to establish a meaningful and sustained recognition system for teachers, which should not be limited to ceremonial events such as Teachers' Day, but built into the public service system. Teachers in rural areas, special needs educators, and those who develop their own innovative teaching materials deserve acknowledgement and reward for their contributions, he said. 'I want to see more teachers like Cikgu Sydney Engelbert from Keningau, who brought pride to Malaysia by winning the 2024 Cambridge Dedicated Teacher Award. 'I want more teachers like Cikgu Nazmi, a finalist of the Global Teacher Prize. More like Nurhayatul, recipient of the Asia Education Award, and Cikgu Siti Zaitun Khazali, who teaches special needs children to read the Quran — let their struggles not be in vain, let them not remain unheard on the margins of the system,' he added. ahmad zahid hamidi lead teacher workload

Mara to award overseas scholarships to top Hafiz, Hafizah

KUALA LUMPUR: Outstanding Al-Quran Hafiz and Hafizah (men and women who have memorised the Quran) will be prioritised for Mara scholarships to foreign universities under a new initiative starting this year. Mara chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the programme would support high-achieving Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students pursuing professional fields such as medicine, engineering, and accounting. The initiative falls under the Mara Young Talent Development Programme and is open not only to students from MRSM Ulul Albab but also those from boarding schools (SBP), religious schools (SMKA, SABK), and both state and private Maahad Tahfiz. "The goal is to produce more professional Huffaz who are grounded in al-Quran values and capable of leading in strategic sectors," Asyraf said in a Facebook post. He added that the initiative aligns with the National Tahfiz Education Policy proposed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last year. Following discussions with Mara director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman and Education deputy director-general Dr Mahzan Teh, the programme will be formally included in Mara's policy. "InshaAllah, we aim to nurture future leaders and a Khaira Ummah that is outstanding, distinguished, and grounded in Islamic values," he said. Separately, Asyraf also announced that Mara will sponsor 87 Orang Asli students who excelled in the SPM at its institutions.

Don't use Quranic verses, hadiths as tool to achieve political goals - Mohd Na'im

PUTRAJAYA: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar has urged politicians not to use verses from the Al-Quran and hadiths as a tool to achieve political goals, especially during election campaigns. He said such practices should be avoided, especially in matters that require consultation with religious authorities such as the mufti departments or state Islamic bodies. 'In my view, if it involves opinion on hukum (rulings), it's best to avoid making statements to avoid causing confusion among the public. 'It's always advisable to refer to the mufti department or the relevant authorities. Most importantly, do not exploit them (Quranic verses or hadiths) for political gain,' he told reporters after attending the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPEIM) Aidilfitri celebration here today. Mohd Na'im was responding to a question on the tendency of political leaders to use religious references in their campaign narratives. The media reported that PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, during a mega speech at the Ayer Kuning state by-election campaign last Saturday, said that Muslims should prioritise political victory, even if it means postponing plans to perform the umrah or haj pilgrimage. Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed regret over the campaign tactics being used in the Ayer Kuning state by-election, which continue to raise sensitive issues, including race, religion and royalty. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, said campaigns should focus on the strengths of the party and its candidates, rather than belittling others.
