Doctors in Kuwait beaten for not signing ‘medical leave'
KUWAIT CITY, July 26: The Public Prosecution has started investigating the assault on two doctors working at Sabah Al-Salem North Center by an unknown individual after they left their workplace late at night. Case files indicate that the assailant followed the two doctors in the parking lot of the clinic and attacked them with a sharp object (a wheel wrench), resulting in multiple injuries and a broken hand for one of them. The assault happened when the doctors refused to grant him medical leave after the end of official working hours. Attorney Elaf Al-Saleh, acting on behalf of the Kuwait Medical Association and representing the victims, filed an official complaint against the perpetrator who fled the scene after committing the assault. The complaint was transferred from Sabah Al-Salem Police Station to the prosecution, which heard the testimonies of one of the victims and Al-Saleh. The investigation will be completed once the other doctor gives his testimony upon completion of his treatment at Al-Razi Orthopedic Hospital. The deputy public prosecutor instructed the relevant security authorities to quickly apprehend the culprit. Commenting on the incident, Al-Saleh denounced what she described as a 'blatant and cowardly assault,' stressing that the crime is punishable under Kuwaiti law. She asserted, 'This assault not only affects the two doctors, but it is also a blatant violation of the honor of the health sector, its professional and job security. It contradicts the human and ethical values upon which any civilized society is based. An assault on a doctor is, in essence, an assault on an entire humanitarian profession.' Al-Saleh praised the quick response of the investigation authorities at the area police station and the prosecution, affirming her confidence in the security authorities' ability to arrest the accused and bring him to justice as soon as possible

Huge Plume Rises, Smoke Fills Sky After Deadly Explosion In Syria
Last Updated: A powerful explosion in Idlib, Syria, killed at least two and injured over 70. Fires and panic ensued near Maarrat Misrin. A powerful explosion tore through the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib on Thursday, killing at least two people and injuring more than 70, according to state news agency SANA. The blast occurred near the town of Maarrat Misrin, sending a towering plume into the sky and triggering widespread panic in nearby villages, including al-Foua. Syrian state broadcaster Ikhbariya reported that fires broke out in the area as ambulances and civil defence teams rushed to the site. Raed Al-Saleh, Syria's minister for emergency and disaster management, said teams were carrying out evacuation and rescue operations despite ongoing secondary blasts that were complicating the response. 'No final toll of casualties has been confirmed," Al-Saleh posted on X, urging residents to avoid the area as teams continued working under dangerous and complex conditions. Turkish state-run news agency Anadolu put the death toll at five, reporting that around 15 explosions occurred at an arms depot in the town of Kafriya, damaging nearby buildings and injuring at least 63 others. The Emergency Operations Directorate in Idlib also confirmed casualties from the still-unexplained explosion. While the cause remains unclear, private broadcaster Syria TV suggested it may have originated from an ammunition depot. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that unidentified aircraft were flying over the region at the time of the blast, though there has been no official confirmation of an airstrike. Syria TV reported that 'war remnants and ammunition" had exploded at the site, triggering a series of deadly blasts. The channel's correspondent said several people may have been trapped under the rubble. 'The area witnessed successive explosions as a result of the detonation of war remnants and munitions present at the site," the broadcaster said. There was no immediate indication that the Idlib blast was connected to recent deadly fighting in Syria's southern Sweida province, where violent clashes between pro-government forces and local militias have left hundreds dead in recent weeks. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vicious Assault on Two Doctors in Kuwait
KUWAIT CITY, July 23: The legal representative of the Kuwait Medical Association, Attorney Elaf Al-Saleh, has strongly condemned the assault on two doctors by an individual as they were leaving their workplace after completing their duties. Al-Saleh described the attack as a flagrant violation of both legal and moral standards, emphasizing that it constitutes a full-fledged crime under Kuwaiti law. She stressed that such acts not only harm the doctors involved but also undermine the integrity and dignity of the healthcare sector as a whole. 'This assault is a direct affront to the principles of professional and workplace security, and stands in stark contrast to the ethical and humanitarian values that define any civilized society,' she said. Highlighting the gravity of the incident, Al-Saleh noted that what makes the attack even more egregious is that it targeted medical professionals who were simply fulfilling their sacred duty to save lives and relieve human suffering. She confirmed that all necessary legal actions—both criminal and civil—have been initiated against the perpetrator.

CAN warns of summer sun risks
CAN warns of summer sun risks Cancer Awareness Nation launches skin cancer awareness campaign By Abdellatif Sharaa and Agencies KUWAIT: Kuwait's Cancer Awareness Nation (CAN) has issued a warning against prolonged and direct sun exposure during the summer months, highlighting its significant role in increasing the risk of skin cancer. The advisory came as part of the launch of CAN's latest awareness initiative, 'Safe Under the Sun,' aimed at promoting sun safety and encouraging early detection practices. Speaking at the campaign's launch, CAN Chairman and oncologist Dr Khaled Al-Saleh stressed that skin cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide. 'Despite its prevalence, many cases can be prevented or detected early, greatly improving treatment outcomes and survival rates,' he said. Dr Khaled Al-Saleh Citing official statistics, Dr Al-Saleh noted that in 2020, Kuwait recorded 24 cases of skin cancer—representing 7.3 percent of all diagnosed cancers that year—with eight cases among Kuwaitis and 16 among non-Kuwaitis. He outlined key early warning signs such as the appearance of new moles or spots, noticeable changes in existing moles, non-healing sores, or the presence of scaly patches. 'Public awareness of these symptoms is critical, and we urge regular self-examinations as well as clinical screenings,' he added. Dr Al-Saleh emphasized the importance of preventative measures, including the use of sunscreen, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, wearing protective clothing, and maintaining routine skin checks. Treatment options, he explained, vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer and may include surgical removal, cryotherapy, laser treatments, immunotherapy, and other advanced medications. As part of the campaign, CAN will distribute educational materials and host awareness events in shopping malls and other public venues. — KUNA

Kuwait Airport Terminal 2 Project Nears Completion
KUWAIT CITY, July 14: The Ministry of Public Works has announced that the Kuwait Airport Terminal 2 (T2) project is nearing completion and will soon be handed over to the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) for full operation. The ministry emphasized its commitment to fully governing its projects, highlighting that all supervisory roles within its contracts have been Kuwaitized in collaboration with the Public Authority for Manpower. Assistant Undersecretary for Planning and Development and official spokesperson for the Ministry and the General Authority for Roads and Land Transport, Ahmed Al-Saleh, told Al-Akhbar channel on Kuwait TV that the ministry has several ongoing and planned projects, with Terminal 2 among its flagship developments. Al-Saleh praised Minister Noura Al-Mishaan's leadership, noting her active involvement in monitoring the airport project's progress and resolving any challenges to ensure timely completion. "Overcoming obstacles is the biggest part of implementing any project," he said, adding that the high completion rates reflect the effectiveness of the minister's hands-on approach. The terminal is currently operational, with final handover preparations underway. The ministry has implemented numerous measures to sustain project momentum, including developing a geographic information system (GIS) in partnership with the Public Authority for Civil Information. This system tracks key details across 12 Ministry of Public Works projects and six General Authority for Roads and Land Transport initiatives, such as project supervisors, contracts, and contractors, accessible through a centralized platform. Al-Saleh also highlighted Minister Al-Mishaan's commitment to Kuwaitizing supervisory and engineering positions within the ministry. A Kuwaitization unit was established last year in cooperation with the Public Authority for Manpower, encouraging Kuwaiti engineers to apply for supervisory roles. Currently, all project supervisors appointed by both the ministry and contractors are Kuwaiti nationals. "The ministry has fully Kuwaitized government contracts and their governance," Al-Saleh stated. "This is a major achievement, with governance now firmly embedded within the civil service framework. We are advancing toward complete governance of all our operations."
