‘Precursor to assassination': Gaza reporter Anas Al-Sharif on Israeli threats; CPJ sounds alarm over journalist safety

Anas Al-Sharif, a news reporter in Gaza, is allegedly facing a direct threat from Israel to his life after continued online attacks by a spokesperson of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). 'A precursor to my assassination' is how the 28-year-old Palestinian journalist has described it. Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif, 28, has lost some of his family to IDF strikes; and has continued to report from the ground in Gaza.(Instagram/@anasjamal44) Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news outlet for which he works, and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have expressed immediate alarm over the threats by IDF Arabic-language spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who accuses Al-Sharif of being a terrorist. 'Avichay Adraee's campaign is not only a media threat or an image destruction; it is a real-life threat,' Al-Sharif was quoted as saying by the CPJ. Some members of his extended family have been killed in Israeli airstrikes. 'All of this is happening because my coverage of the crimes of the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip harms them and damages their image in the world," Al-Sharif said of Israel, whom he accused of wanting to 'morally assassinate" him. The IDF's Arabic spokesperson, Avichay Adraee has alleged that Al-Sharif is a Hamas member, particularly since the journalist cried on air this month while reporting on starvation in Gaza. In videos on July 23 and 24 — around the time Israel and the US withdrew their representatives from truce talks with Hamas — IDF spokesperson Adraee said the reporting on starving Palestinians was 'a fabricated drama starring Anas Al-Sharif, who sheds crocodile tears". In earlier videos the same month, Adraee called Al Sharif's and the channel's work 'intellectual terrorism". He was responding to a post by Al-Sharif on his X account that said: 'As a citizen of Gaza, I support a ceasefire by any means now. We are not living; we are just trying to survive.' She called on the international community to protect him. Al Jazeera, in a statement on Friday, said it 'denounces these relentless efforts, which have consistently incited against its staff since the beginning of its coverage of the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza'. The IDF has reportedly stuck by Adraee's stance in his latest video of July 24, in which he accused Al-Sharif of being a member of Al-Qassam, the military wing of Hamas. Global news organisations such as the BBC, AFP, AP and Reuters earlier this week issued a joint statement about being 'desperately concerned' for journalists in Gaza amid warnings of mass starvation. 'IDF has murdered journalists before' While foreign journalists are not allowed free access to Gaza for months now, the CPJ says Israel has deliberately killed local sources of information and reporting. It mentioned at least four Al Jazeera staff — Hamza Al Dahdouh, Ismail Al Ghoul, Rami Al Refee, and Hossam Shabat — as cases of murder by the IDF. Israel, meanwhile, is facing increasing global condemnation over its actions in Gaza, which had started as a response to the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that killed around 1,200 people in Israel. The war since is reported to have claimed over 50,000 Palestinian lives. Starvation in Gaza prompts UN meet Mass starvation at least since early this year is reported to have claimed over 110 lives so far – one of the reasons why a UN conference is now scheduled for July 28-30 in New York to possibly call for peace and an eventual two-state solution. Israel and its largest backer, the US, are not attending the meet, which is being co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France. They have also called back their representatives from talks for a ceasefire with Hamas, saying the group was making unreasonable demands about Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza.

‘Israeli' army accuses journalist of ‘Hollywood' fakery in Gaza starvation coverage

Palestinian journalist Anas Al-Sharif, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, has issued a public statement condemning renewed threats and incitement by the 'Israeli' military over his reporting from war-torn Gaza. In a post shared on his social media accounts, Al-Sharif wrote: 'Once again, the Israeli army spokesperson has launched a campaign of threats and incitement against me because of my work as a journalist with Al Jazeera. I reaffirm: I, Anas Al-Sharif, am a journalist with no political affiliations. My only mission is to report the truth from the ground, as it is, without bias. At a time when a deadly famine is ravaging Gaza, speaking the truth has become, in the eyes of the occupation, a threat.' His statement comes in response to a post by Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-language spokesperson for the 'Israeli' army, who accused Al-Sharif of fabricating a report that recently went viral. The footage showed Al-Sharif emotionally reporting live from outside a hospital in Gaza, where a woman fainted on camera, due to hunger, prompting the journalist to break down in tears. Adraee dismissed the scene as staged, calling it a 'Hollywood production - Gaza branch,' in a video posted to X. He accused Al Jazeera of colluding with Hamas and referred to Al-Sharif's tears as 'crocodile tears,' claiming the moment was a 'carefully planned shot.' He also repeated a common narrative by 'Israeli' officials, blaming Hamas for Gaza's suffering by alleging it 'steals humanitarian aid,' while ignoring 'Israel's' ongoing blockade that has largely halted aid entry.

Hodeida: Arrangements for health control of sacrificial animals, protection of livestock

Hodeida - Saba: With the approach of Eid al-Adha, the Slaughterhouses Corporation in Hodeida governorate is intensifying its arrangements to enhance health control of sacrificial animals and ensure their safety. This is part of measures aimed at preventing the slaughter of female and young livestock and preserving livestock, in coordination with the relevant authorities. The Corporation has begun implementing a series of measures to enhance the readiness of official slaughterhouses, train veterinary personnel, and intensify awareness and oversight campaigns as part of a pre-planned plan to protect livestock from depletion and raise awareness of the importance of slaughtering sacrificial animals in accordance with approved health standards. Hodeida is one of the governorates that relies on official slaughterhouses to regulate slaughtering operations, in the absence of licensed private slaughterhouses. This reinforces the responsibilities of the Slaughterhouses and Meat Sales Corporation in health control, performance regulation, and service provision to citizens. With the expansion of meat markets and the increasing number of consumers during Eid al-Adha, the phenomenon of slaughtering female and young livestock emerges as one of the most prominent challenges threatening livestock. This requires the institution and relevant authorities to intensify measures and raise community awareness to curb practices that harm this wealth. In this context, Abdullah al-Sharif, Director of the Governorate's Slaughterhouses Corporation, explained that the corporation has begun implementing a plan that includes training veterinary personnel to inspect sacrificial animals and ensure their safety, and preparing central and branch slaughterhouses to receive sacrifices from citizens, restaurants, and butchers. Al-Sharif pointed out that an awareness campaign has been launched, including the distribution of posters and instructions on the conditions of sacrifice, the permissible age, and the locations and operating hours of slaughterhouses, contributing to raising awareness and ensuring safe slaughter. He explained that the Corporation has recently completed the renovation and maintenance of the city's central slaughterhouse, funded by the Agricultural and Fisheries Projects and Initiatives Financing Unit. This project has contributed to improving the work environment and raising the level of veterinary services. He noted that the Corporation is seeking to approve four projects to expand infrastructure, modernize equipment, and increase operational and oversight capacity. Regarding slaughter violations, al-Sharif indicated that the Corporation enforces the Slaughterhouse Law, which stipulates the confiscation of violating meat after inspection, after which it is distributed to prisons, orphanages, and nursing homes. Fines are imposed and facilities are closed in the event of repeated violations. He emphasized that the slaughter of female and young livestock poses a direct threat to livestock, due to its negative repercussions on food security and meat quality. He explained that the Corporation has implemented two awareness campaigns over the past two years to raise awareness of the dangers of these practices. Al-Sharif pointed out that a large percentage of Eid al-Adha sacrifices are slaughtered in official slaughterhouses, particularly by organizations and government agencies, thanks to awareness-raising efforts and ongoing coordination, along with the increasing demand for slaughter in slaughterhouses due to the health guarantees they provide. The Director of the Slaughterhouses Corporation indicated that oversight during the Eid season relies on field teams operating around the clock, in addition to three branches within the city, and representatives in the directorates to monitor procedures and detect violations. For his part, Asaad al-Arami, Deputy Director of the General Corporation for Slaughterhouses and Meat Sales, explained that the corporation is keen to implement a mechanism for veterinary inspection before and after slaughter, and that this mechanism is reinforced during Eid by increasing staff and providing equipment to ensure meat safety. He called for integrated media and community efforts to promote a culture of organized slaughter, appreciating the support and cooperation of the local authority leadership with the corporation, which contributes to protecting livestock and enhancing food security. The arrangements implemented by the Slaughterhouses Corporation in Hodeida prior to Eid al-Adha reflect its commitment to implementing safety standards and protecting public health.
