Dubai makes vehicle inspection appointments mandatory across all testing centres

Gulf Today, Staff reporter Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has activated the Vehicle Inspection Appointment Booking service on the 'RTA Dubai' app and the website . Effective 2nd June 2025, the booking will be mandatory for all vehicle inspections at technical testing centres across the emirate. For customers who prefer to visit without a prior appointment, an optional walk-in service will be available at 19 centres, subject to an additional service fee of AED 100. The Technical Inspection services through pre-booking appointments are available at 8 other centres, without the walk-in service at these eight centres. The centres are Wasel Al Arabian Centre & Nad Al Hamar, Shamil Al Adid, Al Muhaisnah and Nad Al Hamar, Al Mumayaz Vehicle Testing Al Mizhar, and Tasjeel Al Tawar and Al Mankhool. The decision to expand the service follows the tangible success of the pilot phase, launched in October last year exclusively at the Tasjeel centres in Al Qusais and Al Barsha. The initiative proved effective in saving customers time and effort. Through this expansion, RTA aims to enhance the quality of this vital service, which benefits a broad segment of the population, and to improve customer satisfaction by reducing waiting times for vehicle inspections. The move also reflects RTA's commitment to enriching the customer experience by providing seamless access to premium services across multiple channels. The results of the six-month pilot phase revealed a notable reduction in average customer waiting times for vehicle inspection services at the Al Qusais and Al Barsha centres, by approximately 46%, alongside a 15% decrease in the occupancy rate of physical inspection transactions relative to total available capacity. The volume of vehicle testing transactions at both centres also declined by 13%. Despite this reduction, revenue levels remained unaffected. Additionally, 52% of customers chose to use the pre-booking system, 26% of transactions were completed via the optional walk-in service, and the remaining 22% were for other services that did not require prior appointments. Qais Al Farsi, Director of Vehicle Licensing at RTA's Licensing Agency, said: 'The outcomes of the pilot phase demonstrated a clear improvement and a positive shift in reducing congestion at inspection centres, particularly during peak hours, one of the most persistent challenges at these facilities.' 'The wider rollout of the initiative across vehicle testing centres is expected to yield several key benefits, most notably saving customers time and effort, reducing waiting times by around 40%, and improving occupancy rates, particularly at centres where utilisation had previously exceeded 80%,' he added. Al Farsi further noted: 'The appointment booking system has been made mandatory for all customer and vehicle categories at technical testing centres, except for vehicles registered in Dubai and owned by People of Determination and seniors, both citizens and residents. These individuals are exempt from the booking requirement for vehicle inspection services, in line with RTA's commitment to ensuring accessible and inclusive service delivery for these two key customer segments.' A total of 27 technical testing centres across Dubai now require booking for vehicle inspections via the RTA Dubai smart app or website ( ). Tasjeel Hatta centre is exempt from the appointment booking requirement.

Fire accidents on the rise; CDAA calls for caution

Muscat, May 19 Over the past one week, there has been a surge in fire accidents in commercial buildings, residential areas and farmlands. From January 1 to the end of April 2025, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) received a total of 1,204 fire accident reports. "During the month of May, the Sultanate of Oman experiences a gradual increase in temperatures, which contributes to a higher risk of fire incidents. The main causes observed during this period include poor or non-compliant electrical installations, negligence in the use of electrical and heating appliances such as air conditioners and stoves," First Lieutenant Ali bin Said al Farsi from CDAA, told the Observer. He pointed out that other causes are open burning without proper safety precautions and careless disposal of cigarette butts near flammable materials. "Preliminary statistics indicate a relative increase in fire-related reports during the summer season, particularly in May and June. This is due to rising temperatures and unsafe practices by individuals or in various facilities," he said. The firefighting teams of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority in the Governorate of Al Dhahirah were able to extinguish a fire that broke out in a house in the Wilayat of Yanqul without recording any injuries. Rescue and ambulance teams of CDAA in the Governorate of Muscat responded to a partial collapse in a commercial residential building in Bausher. Initial evidence indicated a momentary gas explosion resulting from a cooking gas leak in a restaurant. The accident resulted in the death of two Asian nationals. The authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident. The CDAA's firefighting teams in the Governorate of Al Batinah North were able to extinguish a fire that broke out in trees in the Wilayat of Shinas, and there were no injuries. A hypermarket also experienced a fire accident. In Muscat, the CDAA, with the support of the Special Tasks Police Unit in Al Seeb, was able to control a fire mishap and prevent it from spreading. Al Farsi explained that fires involving trees and vegetation are often caused by high temperatures and extreme dryness, which make dry grass and leaves highly flammable, in addition to careless disposal of cigarette butts or glass objects that may focus sunlight. Other major causes have been campfires or outdoor cooking without ensuring full extinguishment and agricultural or industrial activities near green areas without proper safety measures, he noted. However, electrical fires remain one of the most common types of fire incidents, particularly in homes and commercial establishments. "These are usually caused by improper and unsafe electrical wiring, lack of regular maintenance for electrical appliances and the use of non-standard or counterfeit electrical devices," Al Farsi stressed. The Civil Defence and Ambulance Department in Muscat carried out a joint practical exercise in cooperation with OQ Company and the relevant authorities in Al Seeb. This exercise aimed to enhance the preparedness of emergency teams and improve their ability to respond to industrial accidents. It included a number of scenarios, including a crude oil leak from a pipeline and a fire breaking out during technical inspections, with a number of casualties. The aim of the exercise was to develop field capabilities and enhance coordination among various stakeholders to ensure a rapid response and effective intervention in such emergency incidents. The firefighting teams of the Civil Defence and Ambulance Department in the Governorate of Al Sharqiyah South were able to control a fire that broke out in a warehouse in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, with no injuries recorded. The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority has amended the application for suggestions, complaints, reports and inquiries related to its services - the Tajawub platform. SAFETY TIPS - Ensure all electrical installations are safe and do not overload power outlets - Avoid leaving electrical appliances running while away or asleep - Refrain from lighting fires in open areas, especially during peak heat hours - Do not store flammable materials in areas exposed to direct sunlight - Keep fire extinguishers at home and in vehicles, and know how to use them - Call emergency number (9999) or (24343666) immediately in case of any fire incident

Call for improved public restrooms at Kuwait's beaches, tourist hotspots, and travel routes

KUWAIT CITY, March 19: Municipal Council member Eng. Alia Al Farsi has submitted a proposal concerning the provision of public restrooms, emphasizing that these facilities are a necessity and a fundamental requirement, not a mere option. In her proposal, Eng. Al Farsi stated, "The availability of restrooms outside the home and in public facilities is essential for maintaining public health and safety, and it plays a significant role in improving the quality of life. Ensuring the locations of these restrooms are easily identifiable and accessible is a basic and necessary requirement." She further noted that the new Gulf Building Code is designed to promote public health and safety by establishing unified building standards that consider the region's environmental and geographical conditions. Based on this, Eng. Al Farsi proposed the following: To follow the guidelines set out in the Gulf Building Code and adhere to the building laws and regulations, particularly those clauses that require all buildings and facilities—whether commercial, investment, craft-related, or public—to provide restrooms that serve their users and visitors. Special attention should be given to the needs of the elderly, children, and individuals with medical conditions who require accessible restrooms. These restrooms must be sustainable, of high quality, and designed to accommodate men, women, and people with special needs in all public facilities and establishments. For example, but not limited to: Mubarakiya Market – increasing the number of restrooms. Public and tourist facilities. Public beaches. Land travel routes. Clear guidance and identification signs should be placed to direct individuals to the restrooms.

1.5 million people receive social protection benefits

Muscat: Overall spending on social protection has surged to RO 577 million signaling the great attention the Sultanate of Oman pays to achieving stability, a dignified life and improving the standard of living of citizens. Dr Faisal bin Abdullah al Farsi, CEO of the Social Protection Fund (SPF), explained that the fund's system includes a set of policies and programmes that deal with the life cycle of the individual from birth to old age. There are two types of benefits: insurance programmes and social protection programmes. The Social Protection Fund functions as an executive body to enforce the laws and legislation related to the social protection system, Al Farsi said stressing that governance is the basis for disbursing benefits and that governance aims to ensure that benefits only go to those who are actually entitled to them. Dr Faisal bin Abdullah al Farsi, CEO of the Social Protection Fund (SPF) Al Farsi said that the number of direct beneficiaries of social protection benefits crossed 1.5 million people. As for insurance programmes, there are 590,000 active insured persons in addition to 1 million foreign workers who were added to the social protection system for the first time. Hence, the Social Protection Fund benefits more than 2 million people monthly. Al Farsi noted that the system includes three main levels namely: zero level which is the basic social protection such as the elderly benefit which amounts to RO 115 disbursed as part of social protection support on top of the retirement pension. Certainly, some benefits are paid automatically to all Omanis who meet the conditions, such as the elderly, while other benefits are subject to verification to ensure that they go to the persons who need them the most. Regarding the classification of permanent diseases, Al Farsi said that measures are underway to classify the category of permanent diseases as part of the benefits of people with disabilities and the classification is expected to be approved soon. Al Farsi said that the new social protection law was distinguished by making retirement pensions variable instead of being fixed due to inflation. Accordingly, pensions are calculated on the basis of 75 per cent of the official inflation rate while ensuring a minimum annual rise. This year, the percentage was raised to 1 per cent and will be reviewed annually according to the inflation rate. As per the new system, the retirement pension is calculated according to the annual wage growth rate which amounted to 3 per cent last year. This means that individuals who did not receive a salary rise will be automatically compensated by this percentage upon calculating the retirement pension. Also under the Social Protection System is the Job Security System which provides temporary support to those who lost their jobs for reasons beyond their control during crises. The system has seen an extension of the unemployment benefits for more than five years due to economic crises, Al Farsi concluded.
