UAE: Sneezing, coughing? This 'everyday' condition is often mistaken for cold, experts warn

If you have been sneezing, coughing, or dealing with a stuffy nose for days or even weeks, don't be too quick to blame it on a common cold. Experts in the UAE are warning that many people may be misreading their symptoms when in fact they could be suffering from allergic rhinitis, a chronic condition that affects up to 45 per cent of the population in the region. 'Allergic rhinitis is not an infection like the flu or a cold,' said Dr Mohammed Ahmed Abdulla Al Hammadi, vice president of the Emirates ENT Society, on the sidelines of the introduction of ClariSpray, a new gel-based spray to overcome nasal congestion. 'It's something wrong with your immune system. Some symptoms overlap, like nasal congestion, a runny nose, and a cough. But with a cold or flu, you usually have a fever and body aches; allergic rhinitis won't give you those.' Bayer, the company that unveiled the spray, collaborated with several UAE-based healthcare entities, including the Emirates Pharmacists Society and the Emirates ENT Society, formalising the partnerships through official signing ceremonies. These agreements aim to boost public awareness about respiratory and allergic conditions, enhance pharmacist training, and ensure patients receive proper guidance on treatment usage. According to Dr Al Hammadi, one of the clearest signs is how long the symptoms last. 'The flu might come two or three times a year. But allergic rhinitis can trouble you every day, all year long. That's why it's important to know the difference, because the treatment is not the same.' Triggers at home In the UAE, the weather is mostly humid and temperate. Given the living conditions, raising awareness about allergic rhinitis is especially important due to its widespread presence. 'House dust mites are one of the top triggers here,' said Dr Al Hammadi. 'They are in your carpets, pillows, and mattresses. Other triggers include pollen, especially in some seasons, and even pets like cats and dogs.' 'Lifestyle changes can really help. If you know you are going into a dusty area, wear a mask. Even something as simple as cleaning your house can set off symptoms if you are allergic. So take precautions,' said Dr Halima Al Dhanhani, chairperson of Culture and Media at the Emirates Pharmacists Society. While avoiding triggers can help reduce symptoms, many still struggle with daily discomfort and seek over-the-counter solutions. New options for relief For many, nasal congestion is one of the most bothersome symptoms, whether it's from a cold or allergic rhinitis. A newly launched nasal spray is offering fast-acting relief by clearing airways in just a few minutes and lasting for up to 12 hours. 'This spray helps people breathe easier, whether the congestion is from an allergy or a cold,' said Dr Mohammad Galal, vice president and head of the Middle East and Pakistan at Bayer Consumer Health. 'What makes it different is that it doesn't drip like traditional sprays. It's a gel-based formula that sticks inside the nose and stays effective longer.' Dr Al Dhanhani said that pharmacists have been trained on how to use the spray, and they will be teaching and educating the patients on its proper usage. 'We don't just hand over medication. We have already trained pharmacists on steps to use the spray; they will show patients how to use nasal sprays properly and what time to take medicine. [The pharmacists will also] ask [patients] to repeat back the instructions. That way, we are sure they have understood; otherwise, the medicine might not work the way it should.' 'This solution is available over the counter in pharmacies and the pharmacists will show the step-by-step procedure on its usage,' said Dr Galal.

Inclusive participation across society She underlined the Ministry of Culture's commitment to ensuring the presence and engagement of all members of society, including adults, adolescents, and children. She stated that the pavilion is notable for having contributions from people of determination, as represented by the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, as well as displaying handcrafted products manufactured by penal prison convicts. Workshops, dialogues, and culinary According to Al Hammadi, the pavilion provides training workshops for artisans and craftsmen in partnership with supportive institutions, with the goal of empowering and developing their skills in industrial and craft-related activities. She further mentioned that the pavilion hosts an array of discussion sessions, as well as top Emirati chefs, including Michelin-starred chefs.
