UOS champions research-driven education at QS Middle East 2025

Organised by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global leader in university rankings and educational consulting, the summit convened international higher education leaders to discuss the evolving role of universities in shaping the future of Society 5.0. Discussions emphasised the critical role universities play in fostering inclusive growth, cultivating critical thinking, and bridging skill gaps while ensuring humanity remains at the heart of technological and industrial advancement. Keynote address on university excellence Prof. Al Naimiy delivered his keynote speech during the opening forum, "Leading with Distinction: University Excellence for the Future," where he joined fellow university presidents and regional education leaders to explore how universities can champion comprehensive development, nurture critical thinking skills, build knowledge-based economies, and advance sustainable academic and research practices. Speakers also addressed the ethical responsibility of universities to ensure human values remain central to technological and industrial progress. Strategic vision and academic offerings Prof. Al Naimiy presented Sharjah University's key initiatives and practices outlined in its 2025-2030 strategy. These initiatives aim to achieve excellence across all facets of university operations through integrating scientific research and education, continuously adapting to digital transformations and technological advancements. He announced that the University will offer approximately 150 academic programs starting in September, including master's and doctoral degrees, with graduate programs comprising over 60% of the offerings. All programs are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education, and 80% have secured international academic accreditation. Adapting to Generation Z learners The Chancellor emphasised the importance of keeping pace with the changing behaviors and expectations of students, particularly those from Generation Z. He noted that the University has established the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education to train faculty members in developing teaching methods tailored to the mindset of this digitally savvy generation, which demonstrates a unique engagement with modern learning tools and methods. Community engagement and industry partnerships Turning to the University's engagement with the community and industry, Prof. Al Naimiy highlighted University of Sharjah's experience in involving graduate students, especially working professionals, in applied research that addresses real-world challenges faced by their organisations. He stated that the University is actively building partnerships with the industrial and governmental sectors, fostering impactful research projects, and enhancing the University's role as a hub for knowledge generation that is aligned with the specific needs of the community. A Quadruple Helix approach to sustainable development In closing, Prof. Al Naimiy affirmed that the University of Sharjah embraces a comprehensive Quadruple Helix approach, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, society, and government, thereby solidifying its position as a leading educational institution that actively contributes to building a sustainable future. QS Summit: A platform for global academic dialogue The QS Summit is a prominent global platform that brings together university leaders, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the future of higher education. This year's edition focused on "Reshaping the Future of Universities in the Era of Society 5.0," emphasising the integration of technological innovation with human needs in shaping the future of communities. The event featured open discussions and workshops addressing topics such as digital transformation in higher education, academic leadership in a changing environment, the future of employment and workforce skills, and international partnerships in research and innovation.

In a concerted effort to enhance the nation's environmental resilience, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the University of Sharjah (UoS) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), heralding a new era of collaboration. The memorandum, executed at the University's Sharjah campus, seeks to seamlessly integrate the ministry's policy initiatives with the university's formidable scientific and research capabilities, advancing progress towards the realisation of ambitious sustainable development benchmarks. Signatories to the agreement were Dr Alanoud Al Haj, Acting Assistant Under-Secretary for the Green Development and Climate Change Sector, representing the ministry, and Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the university Al Haj, in her address, emphasised the United Arab Emirates' unwavering dedication to surmounting the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and preserving the nation's invaluable biodiversity. She lauded the strategic alliance with the University of Sharjah as a pioneering stride towards integrating the collective expertise and capabilities of the public and academic domains. This synergistic partnership, she asserted, would significantly support the country's endeavours to fulfil its environmental sustainability mandates and pave the way for a more green and ecologically sound future. Furthermore, she underscored the critical importance of harnessing cutting-edge scientific research to formulate robust and effective policies aimed at safeguarding the environment and mitigating the escalating impacts of global climate change. Prof Al Naimiy, echoing this sentiment, reaffirmed the University's steadfast adherence to its overarching strategic vision, which places paramount emphasis on community engagement and social development. He elucidated that the university remains resolute in its mission to strengthen its role within the community through the cultivation of strategic alliances with leading national institutions. The university aims to provide innovative solutions to address the various challenges confronting society across a spectrum of critical sectors. These solutions will be underpinned by rigorous scientific inquiry and evidence-based research. Al Naimiy added, 'We are proud of this collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, which will enable the University to contribute its research and academic expertise to support national efforts in confronting the challenges of climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability at the national level.' The framework delineated within the MoU encompasses a range of critical initiatives, most notably the reinforcement of conservation efforts targeting endangered indigenous mountain flora through the development and implementation of comprehensive conservation strategies. Additionally, the partnership will promote the utilisation of native plant species in innovative carbon sequestration projects, thereby contributing substantively to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond these endeavors, the collaborative effort will focus on fostering sustainable agricultural practices within mountainous regions through the strategic deployment of advanced technologies, including remote sensing and Artificial Intelligence. Further key objectives include the refinement of water resource management, the advancement of water science disciplines, and the enhancement of soil fertility to ensure long-term agricultural productivity. Recently, the UoS, represented by Al Naimiy, welcomed a delegation from the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, led by its Rector, Prof. Stanislav Prokofiev. The visit aimed to explore avenues for academic and research collaboration between the two institutions. During the reception, Al Naimiy extended a warm welcome to Prof. Prokofiev and his accompanying delegation on behalf of Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah. He noted that UOS currently hosts over 20,500 students across 15 academic colleges and offers 140 academic programs. He also underscored the University's prestigious standing in global rankings and its holistic approach to education, learning, and research, positioning it as a leading academic institution in the region. The visit, attended by Prof. Mammar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, Prof. Ilhan Ozturk, Dean of the College of Business Administration, and Prof. Abdelaziz Soufyane, Director of the International Relations Office, featured discussions on potential collaborations. Key areas of discussion included academic and research partnerships, opportunities for knowledge and cultural exchange, faculty and student exchange programs, and joint research publications, conferences, and symposia. The Russian delegation also expressed interest in collaborating on developing academic programs and joint research on Islamic banking, Islamic financial management, and financial technology, particularly in its integration with Artificial Intelligence .

The ceremony was attended by His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah; His Excellency Abdullah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry; as well as several UoS vice chancellors, members of the Sharjah Chamber's Board of Directors, member of the College of Business Administration's Advisory Council, and a number of prominent entrepreneurs, industry experts, and academics. During the closing ceremony of the forum, winners of the ninth edition of the Sharjah Chamber Award for Innovators were announced. Winner of the first place in the Innovative Projects track – university category – was Mukhrafa from the University of Sharjah, a project by students Zeina Ziad Al-Anzi, Mariam Abu Khair, Mariam Al-Mahmoudi, and Haya Mohammed. The second place in this category went to Sustainbite from the University of Dubai, presented by Abdullah Ibrahim, Mohammed Al-Marzouqi, and Abdulaziz Al-Qasimi. In the Sustainable Innovation and Employability track, the first-place award went to the Faa'iloon project from Khalifa University, developed by students Fatima Ramadan and Sarah Mahmoud, while the second place was awarded to Wajhati from the University of Sharjah, presented by Mariam Qaud, Hanan Samaan, Abeer Qaddah, Mariam Karimi, Wissan Kadhat, Moza Aziz, Hamda Al-Ali, and Rama Mansour. In the school category, the first place in the Innovative Projects track was awarded to Safety in Every Step from the Applied Technology Schools – Ajman, a project developed by students Bati Al-Muhairi and Abdullah Al-Shamsi. The second place went to the Arduino-Based Vehicle Safety System, a project from the Applied Technology Schools – Umm Al-Quwain, by students Bushra Al-Ketbi, Najoud Al-Ketbi, and Reem Al-Shamsi. In the Sustainable Innovation and Employability track, the first place went to Emirates Farm from the Applied Technology Schools – Umm Al-Quwain, presented by students Salama Al-Suridi, Afra Al-Mazrouei, Adhiba Al-Ali, Maha Al-Housani, and Haya Al-Hubsi. The second-place award went to Smart Flood Defense for Underground Parking Facilities from the Applied Technology Schools – Al-Ain, by students Maram Al-Sharji and Dana Al-Shamsi. Events of the forum commenced with an opening speech by His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, who expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi for his patronage of the forum and his ongoing support for the University's innovative endeavors across various fields. He emphasized that the collaboration between the University of Sharjah and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry in organizing this forum is a significant step towards fostering a culture of innovation and creativity among students. He highlighted the importance of empowering young people to identify challenges affecting individuals and endeavor to develop innovative solutions that can be translated into entrepreneurial projects that contribute to societal development and economic and environmental sustainability. He also outlined the University's mission to equip students with both theoretical and practical skills, enabling them to showcase their ideas and capitalize on opportunities for further development. In his remarks, His Excellency Abdullah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, 'We are delighted to celebrate a new group of winners of the Sharjah Chamber Award for Innovators, launched in collaboration with the University of Sharjah. This initiative continues to support the culture of innovation and creativity among young Emiratis. The award focuses on two invaluable elements: human capital, which is the true instigator of development, and innovation, which is a fundamental driver of a promising future. This award motivates young people to present pioneering and innovative projects that contribute to the development of the national economy.' He also added, 'We are proud that this edition saw the participation of over 300 entrants, which reflects the prominent role the University of Sharjah plays in developing the skills and capabilities of Emirati youth. This wide participation highlights the importance of the award in stimulating innovation and fulfilling students' ambitions. The accompanying exhibition also provided an opportunity to discover several innovative projects that reflect the creativity and entrepreneurial thinking of the youth.' Prof. Ilhan Ozturk, Dean of the College of Business Administration, commended the innovative projects presented during this edition of the award, noting that 319 projects were submitted by 8 groups. He described these entrees as an inspiring beginning for a journey of creativity and change, showcasing the passion and ingenuity of the talented participants. He emphasized that the University of Sharjah, through its College of Business Administration, is dedicated to fostering an environment conducive to innovation and creativity, thus shaping the future of the nation. He also extended his gratitude to all the participants and organizers for their efforts in making this event a success, embodying the shared vision for excellence and leadership. The forum featured keynote speakers including Duran James Davies, CEO of Bounce, and Jamal Ahmed Mousa, CEO of Digital Brand Building Company, who shared their personal experiences in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship. They discussed the major challenges and opportunities they encountered in their careers, along with successful strategies for business development and developing digital brands.

Through this partnership, the University aims to create new opportunities for students and researchers, providing a comprehensive platform to develop and support creative and innovative projects that serve society and contribute to sustainable development. The memorandum expands cooperation between the two institutions in various aspects. It paves the way for organizing joint events, exchanging expertise, and providing support for creative initiatives and talented individuals from the University of Sharjah community. The agreement also includes stipulations for jointly hosting academic and training events, and conducting initiatives and programs designed to support innovators across various fields. The proposed initiatives will feature competitions, awards, and collaboration on issues related to intellectual property rights, trademark registration, and patent protection through Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG-Global). The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both institutions. Representing the University of Sharjah were Prof. Maammar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies; Prof. Yousef Haik, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs; and Dr. Amal Al Ali, Director of the Alumni Association.
