
UOS champions research-driven education at QS Middle East 2025
Organised by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global leader in university rankings and educational consulting, the summit convened international higher education leaders to discuss the evolving role of universities in shaping the future of Society 5.0. Discussions emphasised the critical role universities play in fostering inclusive growth, cultivating critical thinking, and bridging skill gaps while ensuring humanity remains at the heart of technological and industrial advancement.
Keynote address on university excellence
Prof. Al Naimiy delivered his keynote speech during the opening forum, "Leading with Distinction: University Excellence for the Future," where he joined fellow university presidents and regional education leaders to explore how universities can champion comprehensive development, nurture critical thinking skills, build knowledge-based economies, and advance sustainable academic and research practices. Speakers also addressed the ethical responsibility of universities to ensure human values remain central to technological and industrial progress.
Strategic vision and academic offerings
Prof. Al Naimiy presented Sharjah University's key initiatives and practices outlined in its 2025-2030 strategy. These initiatives aim to achieve excellence across all facets of university operations through integrating scientific research and education, continuously adapting to digital transformations and technological advancements. He announced that the University will offer approximately 150 academic programs starting in September, including master's and doctoral degrees, with graduate programs comprising over 60% of the offerings. All programs are accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education, and 80% have secured international academic accreditation.
Adapting to Generation Z learners
The Chancellor emphasised the importance of keeping pace with the changing behaviors and expectations of students, particularly those from Generation Z. He noted that the University has established the Institute of Leadership in Higher Education to train faculty members in developing teaching methods tailored to the mindset of this digitally savvy generation, which demonstrates a unique engagement with modern learning tools and methods.
Community engagement and industry partnerships
Turning to the University's engagement with the community and industry, Prof. Al Naimiy highlighted University of Sharjah's experience in involving graduate students, especially working professionals, in applied research that addresses real-world challenges faced by their organisations. He stated that the University is actively building partnerships with the industrial and governmental sectors, fostering impactful research projects, and enhancing the University's role as a hub for knowledge generation that is aligned with the specific needs of the community.
A Quadruple Helix approach to sustainable development
In closing, Prof. Al Naimiy affirmed that the University of Sharjah embraces a comprehensive Quadruple Helix approach, fostering collaboration between academia, industry, society, and government, thereby solidifying its position as a leading educational institution that actively contributes to building a sustainable future.

The QS Summit is a prominent global platform that brings together university leaders, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the future of higher education. This year's edition focused on "Reshaping the Future of Universities in the Era of Society 5.0," emphasising the integration of technological innovation with human needs in shaping the future of communities. The event featured open discussions and workshops addressing topics such as digital transformation in higher education, academic leadership in a changing environment, the future of employment and workforce skills, and international partnerships in research and innovation.

UoS opens Spain chapter of alumni body
In a significant step to broaden its global alumni network, the University of Sharjah has inaugurated the Executive Committee of its Alumni Association in the Kingdom of Spain. This marks the association's first regional chapter outside the Arab world and its seventh international and regional chpater overall. The launch was celebrated at an official gathering organised by the Alumni Association in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Madrid, attended by Ibrahim Ali Al Nuaimi, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Madrid., Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, Dr. Amal Al Ali, Director of the Alumni Association Office, and Dr. Ahmed Al Mahdi, Director of the University's Scholarship Unit, alongside a distinguished group of graduates from various disciplines. The establishment of the chapter aims to foster enduring connections between alumni and their alma mater, empowering graduates to serve as ambassadors for the University of Sharjah at academic and professional forums worldwide. This initiative is set to further the University's vision and mission on the international stage. In his opening remarks, Ibrahim Al Nuaimi expressed his pride in this pioneering initiative, commending the university's dedication to strengthening ties with its graduates abroad. He stressed that such gatherings reflect the UAE's commitment to extending its academic and cultural influence globally, while also opening new avenues for collaboration between Emirati universities and their counterparts in Europe and Latin America. Dr. Salah Taher Al Haj, Vice Chancellor of the University, delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting the University of Sharjah's most notable achievements. He underscored the University's status as a leading educational institution that seamlessly blends academic excellence with international engagement. Dr. Al Haj also outlined key aspects of the University's new 2024–2030 EDGE strategic plan, launched under the motto 'Excellence in Teaching together and Research that Matters to Our Community.' Dr. Amal Al Ali, Director of the Alumni Association Office, reviewed the Association's major accomplishments in recent years, noting that the launch of the Spain chapter is a continuation of its regional and international expansion. Previous executive committees have been established in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Oman, Jordan, and Bahrain. Wafaa Laalaoui, the new committee chair, who holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from the University in 2021 and is currently a final-year Master's researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, expressed her pride in being part of the University of Sharjah, affirming the committee's commitment to strengthening alumni connections, building an interactive network that reinforces their academic and institutional identity, and encouraging active participation in scientific and community initiatives.

SGCA highlights University Challenge, AI Skills Camp
The Sharjah Government Communication Award (SGCA), presented by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau (SGMB), has dedicated two categories in its 12th edition this year, namely – the University Challenge and the AI Skills Camp (AISC) – to recognise creative competition in smart communication and promote technological and digital innovations in government communication. The University Challenge category of the SGCA involves a three-day creative competition in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), inviting students from universities across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to showcase innovative communication projects. AI Skills Camp The AISC, to be held in partnership with the Rubu' Qarn Life Skills Center in Sharjah, seeks to foster a creative environment to impart and boost practical skills in artificial intelligence, focusing on the production and management of government and media content using smart technologies. Alya Al Suwaidi, Director of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, reaffirmed the SGCA's objective and keenness to support creative competition in smart communication, rewarding excellence and outstanding achievements in digital communication and effectively utilising modern technologies in interactive public engagement. This aligns with rapid technological advancements that have become a cornerstone of government communication processes, she added. The SGMB Director noted that the two categories recognise and encourage university students to innovate and support constructive ideas and strategies, contributing to the effective and enhanced quality of government communication. Such categories expand the award's scope and reach, enabling broader participation to serve the vital government communication sector at the national, regional, and global levels. The 12th edition of the prestigious SGCA boasts 23 categories across strategic sectors, including government entities, international organisations, the private sector, individual awards, the 'Best Innovators Competition in Smart Communication' award, jury awards, and partner awards. The SGCA Award is open for submissions across all its categories until July 24. Winners will be announced and awarded during the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) in September. IBM partners with University of Sharjah on new app designed to promote sustainable agriculture
The University of Sharjah has partnered with IBM on a new mobile application called My FarmWell, which is designed to promote sustainable agriculture in water-stressed regions across the MENA region. Built using IBM Environmental Intelligence and UoS Welly Chatbot, My FarmWell integrates IBM Cloud and region-specific water and climate data to provide farmers with timely, farm-level insights. From optimizing irrigation strategies to understanding local regulations, the app offers a comprehensive toolkit to support more sustainable and productive agricultural practices. With its bilingual (English and Arabic) user-friendly interface, My FarmWell equips farmers with access to well-specific data such as current water levels, historical groundwater trends, water quality indices (IWQI), and crop recommendations supporting smarter decisions in increasingly water-scarce environments. Speaking on the launch, UoS Chancellor His Excellency Prof. Essam El-Din Ajami expressed his pride in this scientific achievement, which stems from collaborative research conducted with IBM. He emphasized that, 'This milestone aligns with the university's strategic commitment to serving local and regional communities through impactful research that addresses environmental challenges'. He added that the University of Sharjah is dedicated to advancing sustainability efforts in a way that benefits not only the United Arab Emirates but also positions the university as a leading model for the entire Middle East and North Africa region.
