Egypt issues another warning to Ethiopia over GERD

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam warned Ethiopia against its continued unilateral action in managing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), as such actions pose a direct threat to Egypt's water security. Sewilam's remarks came during a phone interview with Ahmed Moussa's TV show 'Ala Massoulity' (On My Responsibility) on Saturday. Egypt is closely monitoring developments regarding the GERD, and has emphasized the need for Ethiopia to adhere to international law and recognize Egypt's water rights. Water relations with the southern Nile Basin countries, such as Tanzania, Congo, and South Sudan are good, while they remain tense with Ethiopia. The minister explained that Egypt faces water scarcity, with an annual per capita share of approximately 500 cubic meters, compared to the international water poverty rate (1,000 cubic meters). Sewilam denied the existence of a water crisis in Egypt, assuring that the country is capable of managing its water challenges thanks to massive investments worth LE500 billion in water projects, including water treatment and recycling. Egypt has increased the volume of recycled water from 21 billion cubic meters two years ago to an expected 26 billion in the coming months, to address water scarcity and support agriculture in the desert. The Egyptian minister emphasized that the High Dam plays a crucial role in protecting Egypt from flooding, noting that this year's flooding was above average – a positive indicator. Sewilam revealed the ministry's use of mathematical models and modern technology to accurately monitor rainfall flows from Nile Basin countries, with a focus on improving the efficiency of water distribution for agriculture and households. Egypt has repeatedly affirmed its rejection of Ethiopia's unilateral actions, especially after the dam's filling began in 2020 without a tripartite agreement. In December 2023, Egypt suspended negotiations with Ethiopia after several previous rounds of negotiations failed due to what Sewilam described as Ethiopia's 'evasiveness and procrastination.' Egypt is demanding a binding agreement that guarantees that its water share will not be harmed, noting that the dam is 'illegal' due to its failure to comply with international law. It has also expressed concern about the dam's strength, warning of the risk of its collapse for Sudan and Egypt.

Netanyahu presents his plan for dividing Gaza to US administration: Expert explains

Egyptian military expert and national security researcher, Mahmoud Mohieddin, stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented strategic maps to the US administration that include his vision for the future of the region, with Israel focusing primarily on the Gaza Strip. During an interview with Ahmed Moussa's TV show 'Ala Massoulity' (On My Responsibility) on Saturday, Mohieddin explained that Netanyahu also presented another map that includes the annexation of a large portion of the Gaza Strip – raising real concerns about Israel's desire to divide and displace Palestinians. Israeli authorities evacuated Israelis with dual citizenship from the Gaza Strip, Mohieddin noted, while the Shin Bet internal security service formed special teams to negotiate with Palestinian residents to persuade them to leave: steps that showcase Israel's vested interest in forced displacement. 'Egypt represents the main obstacle to these plans and is forcefully confronting attempts to displace Palestinians from their land,' Mohieddin stressed. He explained that the Egyptian people still reject normalization with Israel despite the existence of an official peace treaty. Mohieddin farther warned that the Shin Bet is recruiting Palestinians with the aim of fueling internal conflicts that could lead to a civil war. He confirmed that an armed group led by a man named Yasser Abu-Shabab, comprising approximately 250 young Palestinians, has been prepared to act as an alternative to Hamas should it withdraw from Gaza. Hamas has become aware of this plan and has set clear conditions, he explained, including the withdrawal of Israel's forces from the Morag Corridor and the opening of Rafah crossing on the Palestinian side, all to halt Israel from enacting its plans. He added that Israel is seeking to prevent the expansion of the buffer zone inside Gaza Strip to a kilometer or more, as a prelude to completely isolating Gaza, which threatens the gradual displacement of Palestinians in the coming years. Mohieddin also noted that a Zionist lobby supported Donald Trump's victory in the US presidency, in exchange for implementing specific policy provisions that serve Israeli interests in the region. Egypt has a clear and indisputable position towards rejecting the displacement of Palestinians, noting that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi had previously discussed the details of this plan and the extent of the pressures exerted on Egypt, but stressed that its national position remains firm.

Suez Canal mulls 15% discount on transit fees, authority chief

The Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority in Egypt, Osama Rabie, on Monday announced that a study is now underway into providing a 15 percent reduction in transit fees for some companies for a specific period. During an interview with Ahmed Moussa's TV show 'Ala Massoulity' (On My Responsibility) on the privately-owned satellite channel Sada al- Balad, Rabie explained that this study aims to encourage more ships to use the Suez Canal. Rabie anticipates the decision to be formally announced in the coming days following Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's approval. He assured that the Suez Canal Authority is constantly working to achieve maximum economic benefit and enhance confidence in the global waterway. The transit of any number of ships through the Suez Canal will be a boon for the Egyptian state, he said. He added that 30 ships currently transit the canal daily for a global French shipping agency, indicating that the canal continues to operate despite regional tensions. Rabie explained that international shipping companies are awaiting a return to calm in the Red Sea region so that ships can resume normal transit through the Suez Canal. Jordan has requested the Suez Canal Company to manufacture a large launch for it, he said, noting that work on implementing this project is currently underway.

Egypt's Bakeries Division reveals expected increase in Fino bread prices

The head of the Bakeries Division, Abdullah Ghorab, said that a meeting will be held on Sunday at the Chamber of Commerce to coordinate with the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade regarding the price of tourist (non-subsidized) and Fino bread, following the recent increase in fuel prices. During a phone interview with Ahmed Moussa's TV show 'Ala Massoulity' (On My Responsibility) on Saturday evening, Ghorab said that there will be an increase in the price of tourist and Fino bread. He pointed out that baking a sack of flour consumes 16 liters of diesel. Ghorab explained that the price of tourist and Fino bread is expected to increase by no more than 25 percent, noting that the weight of the loaf will remain unchanged. He pointed out that the increase in diesel prices significantly impacts bread production.
