A&M students express concerns about housing on the Hill

NORMAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama A&M University continues to grow, welcoming its largest-ever freshman class in both 2023 and 2024, but with growth comes challenges. The university has faced complaints from students and their families in recent years over student housing conditions. Now, A&M has to house more students than ever. Decatur Morgan Hospital achieves CLABSI infection rate of zero 'Sometimes the people who are in power in these situations don't fully understand the effects of what they're doing, especially when they don't fully consider the voices of the people that are under them,' said Alabama A&M student Georghetta Conaway. Conaway, a senior at A&M, has lived in university housing during her time on the Hill, but she said she needs to know if the school will still have a room for her next semester. She said she reached out to News 19 because she and other students have asked for information about where they will be able to live in August, and the university has been slow to provide it. 'My peers have said they've called the housing office and emailed and all those kinds of things, but nobody's really answering the phones for them,' Conaway said. According to a housing update sent to Conaway late Thursday, A&M confirmed it will prioritize on-campus housing for freshman students. When those campus rooms are full, upperclassmen will be directed to off-campus apartments leased by the university, which A&M said will be the available housing for more than 55% of their students. Body found on Whitesburg Bridge, death ruled as homicide Conaway is still not clear if students who use financial aid to help pay for housing will still be able to do that, or if they will face bigger out-of-pocket costs. 'They try to provide scholarships for people who may not look the best on paper, but they are trying to give our community, you know, everyone a chance at education,' Conaway said. 'I admire that and I appreciate that. I think of that when I think of this situation, but it also makes me upset because it feels like they're not planning properly to make sure they can accommodate all the people that they are letting into the school.' Conaway said she has felt discouraged from reaching out to A&M administration. She said she and her fellow students have questions and concerns that she hopes leadership will hear and provide timely responses moving forward. 'It also just feels like the money is not going to places where it would be in the best interest of their current students,' Conaway said. 'Because what is a school without students?' Alabama A&M currently has two dorms closed for renovations. Morris and Stephens Halls are scheduled to reopen in Spring 2026. News 19 has reached out to Alabama A&M for comment, but we have not heard back. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Transfer QB spins the block to in-conference HBCU rival

Mekhi Hagens will don a new uniform when he returns to the gridiron for the 2025 HBCU football season. The former Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback committed to Alabama A&M after playing two seasons for the Golden Lions, a rival SWAC school. Hagens' decision to join the Bulldogs' program comes after he initially signed with Lamar in February. However, he officially entered the transfer portal on April 29 and elected to bring his talents to Huntsville, Alabama. "#Committed @CLatsonWrU @Coach__Evans @Coach_Sam_Shade Let's Do It?," Hagens tweeted on X, formerly Twitter. Although UAPB was limited to five victories in two seasons under Golden Lions football coach Alonzo Hampton, Hagens built a name for himself as one of the SWAC's most prolific passers. He finished the 2024 campaign with the second-most passing yards (2,541) and passing touchdowns (16) behind former Florida A&M signal caller Daniel Richardson. He also rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The St. Louis native threw for 200 or more passing yards in eight contests and three or more touchdowns in four games last season. In two seasons at UAPB, Hagens tallied 3,093 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 49.4% of his passes. Mekhi Hagens joins an Alabama A&M program under first-year Bulldogs coach Sam Shade, who starts his HBCU football tenure with the program after leading Miles College to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs during the 2024 season. AAMU hired Shade as head coach after the program parted ways with former head coach Connell Maynor in December after seven seasons leading the program. The Bulldogs finished the 2024 campaign at 6-6 overall and 4-4 in SWAC play. The post Transfer QB spins the block to in-conference HBCU rival appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Famous People Who Attended Alabama A&M University

Black America Web Featured Video CLOSE L. Cohen Any day is a good day to celebrate the culture of HBCUs, but the turn-up is on a whole different level when considering Founder's Day at your favorite historically Black college and university. May 1st just so happens to be that day for the Huntsville haven known as Alabama A&M University, which you might be surprised to discover is home to a handful of famous alumni. Since 1875, Alabama A&M has been a proud institution that provides opportunities to our culture specifically that simply allow us to dream big. We hope the AAMU trend of being a hub for academic and professional success continues on for another 150 years! RELATED: Famous People Who Attended Florida A&M University In the century-and-a-half of excellence that's come out of Alabama A&M, we've seen many talented individuals go on to make it big past graduation day. Take for example NFL legend John Stallworth, Class of 1974, who returned five decades later to not only deliver the Spring 2024 commencement address but also award the school with a whopping $1.2 million donation. Through his namesake John Stallworth Foundation, he and wife Flo Stallworth provide academically gifted students with tuition assistance who meet the required funding criteria. As an added bonus, they also get yearly recognition at the AAMU Honor's Convocation as a John Stallworth Foundation Endowment Scholar. You surely can't forget the hometown hero Ruben Studdard, who just a few years before launching his singing career as the season 2 winner of American Idol was stomping through the Alabama A&M hallways from 1996 to 1999. He spoke fondly of his time there to Andscape back in 2016, stating, 'I received a really quality education. I learned so much from the professors and my music instructors that I use to this day. I'm really thankful for my experience, and all of the love and care that they took to make sure we would be the best we could be. My best memories are the simplest ones. Being in the dorm rooms playing cards. Going out. We used to have a dance called a Dusk to Dawn dance every year, and going to that was always fun. I remember Southern University came to A&M in '98 for our homecoming, and how much fun we had at the game. We still talk about that to this day.' 2025 NFL Draft: Identifying Ravens' Best And Worst Draft Pick

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Baltimore Ravens have a reputation as being one of the best drafting teams in the league. It's hard to see that reputation changing at all after the 2025 NFL Draft. The team picked a whopping 11 players, and several of these players could be ticketed for big roles. Head coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens speaks to the media during the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center on February 25, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Head coach John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens speaks to the media during the NFL Scouting Combine at the Indiana Convention Center on February 25, 2025 in Indianapolis, the first round, the team selected Malaki Starks, a talented safety prospect out of Georgia. Starks receives praise for his toughness and leadership and should thrive in Baltimore's system. In the second round, the team added edge-rusher Mike Green. Green was widely expected to be a top-20 pick in the draft, but some troubling allegations caused the pass-rusher to slip. Some of the teams' other notable picks include offensive lineman Emery Jones Jr., linebacker Teddye Buchanan, cornerback Bilhal Kone, and defensive lineman Aeneas Peebles. Now, let's identify the best and worst pick the team made over the weekend. Best: Round 1, Pick 27- Malaki Starks, WR, Georgia You don't have to go far to find the Ravens' best pick. The team's selection of Malaki Starks in the first round was not only incredible value, but it also fills a need. Kyle Hamilton is an elite safety, and now the team has a potentially elite running mate in Starks. Starks is a tackling machine who is elite against the run and holds his own in pass coverage. Some mock drafts had the defender going in the top-10, yet the Ravens got to stand pat and select Starks at the bottom of the first round. The Ravens routinely stand pat and let good players come to them. That's exactly what happened here, and the team didn't overthink it. Worst: Round 5, Pick 141- Carson Vinson, OL, Alabama A&M The Ravens had a good draft and I didn't hate any of these selections, but if I had to pick the worst one, it would be Carson Vinson out of Alabama A&M in the fifth round. The Ravens already took one developmental offensive lineman in Emery Jones Jr. Offensive line depth was a concern, but Vinson played at the FCS level, and competing against lesser compeition may mean Vinson needs a ton of developing. At this point in the draft, the Ravens would have been better off addressing another area of need, like the defensive line. When the team took Vinson, talented defensive linemen who could've made an impact immediately like Rylie Mills, Jordan Phillips, or Ty Hamilton were all available.

Ravens select Alabama A&M OL Carson Vinson with pick No. 141 in the 2025 NFL draft

Ravens select Alabama A&M OL Carson Vinson with pick No. 141 in the 2025 NFL draft Baltimore hosted intriguing Alabama A&M offensive tackle Carson Vinson for a top 30 visit 19 days ago and used pick 141 on the All-American The Ravens love to do their due diligence on talented small-school draft picks, and with one of his 11 selections, GM Eric DeCosta may have found a diamond in the rough in later rounds. Baltimore hosted Alabama A&M offensive tackle Carson Vinson at the Under Armour Performance Center on April 9, and during the fifth round, the Ravens drafted the intriguing prospect. Vinson was named First Team All-SWAC for his play in 2024 and a First-Team FCS All-American. He accepted an invitation to the 2025 Reese's Senior Bowl and was the lone invite from an HBCU program at the 2025 NFL Combine. Vinson plays with a physical, aggressive mentality and loves to set the tone in the run game, something the Ravens flourish at. The North Carolina native was a four-year starter at left tackle and projects as a developmental talent at the NFL level. Vinson measured 6-6 304 pounds in Mobile and started 48 games at offensive tackle during his career.
