Family mourns loss of Coden man killed in crash

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Family and friends are mourning the loss of a man killed in a crash one week ago. Family members say 40-year-old Jeffery Shaw overcame drug addiction to pull his life and family together. Family members say the Coden man was heading home, traveling south here along Dauphin Island Parkway when his life came to an abrupt end. The crash happened on this spot just a week ago. Family members describe Shaw as a loving father and grandfather who was selfless and had a great sense of humor and irreverent attitude about life. Alabama State Troopers Shaw's sedan and an SUV collided head-on, on DIP in south Mobile County around the 16-mile marker. Shaw was killed at the scene. The other driver was treated for injuries at a hospital. Family members say Shaw and his wife both overcame addiction and have been working to do the same for others. 'It was an inspiration to see that you could go from the lowest, the low to a respected human being that you admired,' said brother David Baker. He says Shaw helped him through addiction as well. 'He didn't care what time of day it was. What time of night it was if you needed him or if he knew you needed anything. He made sure that that was in the forefront of him,' said Baker. It's a heartbreaking loss for this family. 'And now he's not here. I don't have the person to help me do this. I don't have the encouragement anymore,' said Jeffery Shaw's wife Ladana. 'I keep having to push my feelings down, because if I let it go, I won't feel like I would be able to do any of this. Family members say Shaw leaves behind seven children and two grandchildren.I reached out to state troopers for more information this week–a spokesperson said they had no further information to release at this time and that this was an ongoing investigation. Bloody Sunday: Today marks 60 years since attack on Civil Rights marchers in Selma

Friday marks 60 years since 'Bloody Sunday,' a major turning point in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. On March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights advocates, including late Congressman John Lewis, gathered for a peaceful march for voting rights in Selma. But that peace was shattered on the Edmund Pettus Bridge by Alabama State Troopers. 'They came toward us. Beating us with nightsticks, trampled by horses, releasing the tear gas. I thought I was gonna die on that bridge. I thought I saw death,' Lewis told Channel 2 Action News in 2015. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Lewis was hospitalized with a cracked skull. But the attack on the marchers bolstered support for the Voting Rights Act. Five months later, Johnson signed the act. 'We said it was worth it. The blood, the beatings, the jailing, it was all worth it,' Lewis said in 2015. Over the years, survivors and civil right leaders have gathered in Selma to walk across the bridge again as a reminder for what they went through. Lewis made a final trip across the bridge in March 2020, a few months before he died from pancreatic cancer. We have to raise our voices not only at the polls, but after. We need to raise our voices now more than ever,' he said. There will events throughout the weekend in Selma and Montgomery.
