The progressive and symphonic rock outfit was active for more than a decade and a half, releasing music from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s. While the band — helmed by Alan Parsons and the late Eric Woolfson — was never a chart juggernaut, it carved out a unique space in rock history. The pair managed to score a number of bestselling albums, and helped expand what successful rock could sound like. The group returns to the U.K. charts this week, but not with a brand new collection. Instead, a long-overlooked title is finally receiving some due attention, as a reissued edition of the band's debut full-length Tales of Mystery and Imagination is now a charting success. The band's first full-length Tales of Mystery and Imagination makes its long-awaited debut on three tallies in the U.K. this week. Despite its age – it was released decades ago – the album is new to each of the tallies on which it lands. The release even manages to enter all three rankings inside the top 40 The set opens highest on the Official Physical Albums chart, where it comes in at No. 28. It also opens at No. 31 on the Official Vinyl Albums tally, and kicks off its time at No. 33 on the Official Albums Sales list. Tales of Mystery and Imagination brings the Alan Parsons Project to the Official Vinyl Albums chart for the very first time. It becomes the group's inaugural placement on that ranking, while it also pushes the band's total career appearances on both the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums rosters to four apiece. Though the Alan Parsons Project hasn't released new material in a long time, the group has been reissuing classic albums steadily for years. The band first arrived on the Official Albums Sales and Official Physical Albums rankings in 2020 with Ammonia Avenue. That project was followed by The Turn of a Friendly Card in 2023 and Pyramid in early 2024, both of which also reached the same rosters. Tales of Mystery and Imagination doesn't just mark another appearance for the Alan Parsons Project, it earns the rockers a new peak. The set is the band's first top 40 win on either the Official Albums Sales or Official Physical Albums chart. Previously, Ammonia Avenue owned the title of the group's best placement on the Physical Albums list, peaking at No. 61. On the Albums Sales chart, Pyramid held the top spot among the band's entries, as it had once reached No. 73. The success of Tales of Mystery and Imagination this frame is largely due to a special reissue campaign. The album was made available through the band's official website in a range of formats that long-time followers snapped up. Buyers could choose between a deluxe double LP, a single vinyl edition, or a CD. Some versions were remastered and pressed at various speeds, while others came packaged with bonus tracks, exclusive booklets, and more collectible items.
