Rare golden raspberries exclusively grown in Scotland available to buy at major supermarket
Punnets of the unique berries are a first for growers at the Perthshire-based Bruce Farm.
Punnets of rare golden raspberries grown in Scotland have exclusively landed at a major supermarket. Available for a limited time only, shoppers won't have long to get their hands on them.
A first for Scottish growers, the unique summer berries were grown by the Perthshire-based Bruce Farm who said that it was a "real passion project" to bring the new fruit to the UK market.
If they are quick, shoppers will be able to pick them up at Asda. To help bring punnets to its stores, the retail giant also worked with the popular Scotty Brand, a firm that was born in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, in 1948 when Albert Barlett began boiling home-grown beetroot in a tin bath to support his family.
The golden-coloured berries officially became available to buy in select stores across the UK this weekend, but Asda has warned customers that they will only be around while crops last.
Said to sit alongside their more popular red counterparts, these raspberries have been getting singled out for their "distinctive" yellow-hue and "delicate" texture.
Geoff Bruce, Director at Bruce Farms, a fourth-generation farm in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, said: "The golden raspberries have been a real passion project for us and it's exciting to be at the forefront of introducing something new to the Scottish soft fruit sector.
"As growers, we're always looking at ways to innovate and explore different varieties that not only thrive in our climate but also offer a unique selling point for customers.
"Our product development team sourced the rare 'all gold' raspberries, and we are pleased to let consumers try them for the first time, however they will need to be quick as the crop is limited.
"It's been incredibly rewarding to see them being grown successfully here in Perthshire's rich farmland and building on our family's 125-year legacy of farming and commitment to quality.'
They are already a massive hit with top Scottish chef Steve McLaughlin of Gleneagles' two-Michelin star restaurant Andrew Fairlie who uses them in fine dining desserts, but has also recommended them for home cooking.
The Scots chef said: "For me, it's always about flavour, and these golden raspberries truly delivered, a delicate understated tartness, balanced with a nice hit of Scottish earthiness. Perfect for a fine dining summer dessert, or equally in a simple fruit salad at home."
