Thoothukudi dog squad secures third prize in state-level efficiency competition

Thoothukudi District dog squad secured third place in the State Level Police Efficiency Competition. The State-level efficiency competition was held at Avadi Battalion in Chennai from July 28 to August 2. The events included contests for the Dog Squad, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) divisions. In the Crime Tracking competition of the dog squad category, the Thoothukudi District Police Dog Squad along with sniffer dog Juno, demonstrated exceptional skills and secured third place, winning the bronze medal. Recognising the achievement, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John, visited the sniffer dog Juno and congratulated the officers for their dedicated training and successful performance in the competition.

Pottaloorani residents seek freedom from fish feed producing units

THOOTHUKUDI: Residents of Pottaloorani pasted posters across the village on the occasion of the 79th Independence Day celebrations, demanding freedom from fish feed companies polluting their village here on Friday. The agitation committee against fish feed companies, which has been protesting against three companies causing foul odour for more than 450 days, pasted posters across the village demanding freedom from these pollution-causing companies. Meanwhile, district collector K Elambahavath hoisted the national flag and inspected the guard of honour in the presence of Superintendent of Police Albert John, at Tharuvai grounds on Friday. Over 705 students from several schools participated in the cultural programmes. Elambahavath distributed welfare assistance worth Rs 5.49 crore to 79 beneficiaries. He also distributed certificates of appreciation to officers from various departments.

Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath hoisted the national flag and honoured the outstanding government employees for their service during the 79th Independence Day celebrations held at Tharuvai Grounds here on Friday. He along with Superintendent of Police Albert John inspected the guard of honour of the police and took salute from the police, fire and rescue service personnel, NCC cadets and home guards. The Collector then honoured 515 government employees from various departments, including health, agriculture, horticulture, revenue, police, social welfare etc,. with certificates for their meritorious works in their respective fields. At the event government lawyers and police personnel who had successfully prosecuted criminals and secured their convictions were also awarded. In addition to this, welfare assistance worth ₹5.49 crore was distributed to 79 beneficiaries on behalf of various departments including Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department, Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, Cooperative department etc,. Mr. Elambahavath also honoured the martyrs of freedom struggle and their heirs at the event. A total of 705 students from seven schools participated in the Independence Day event and performed various cultural activities. District Revenue Officer A. Ravichandran, District Forest Officer Revati Raman, Additional Collector (Development) R. Aishwarya, Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner Banoth Mrugender Lal, Thoothukudi ASP Madhan, Thoothukudi Revenue Divisional Officer M. Prabhu and other officials were present.

Our Lady of Snows Basilica annual feast begins

The 443rd annual festival of Our Lady of Snows Basilica in Thoothukudi began with flag hoisting on Saturday. The annual feast of the Basilica is celebrated for 11 days from July 26 to August 5 with gaiety and devotion every year. Accordingly, the feast commenced on Saturday. Following the flag procession on Friday evening, Bishop of Thoothukudi Roman Catholic Diocese Rev. Stephen Antony hoisted the flag to mark the commencement of the 11-day feast and celebrated the Holy Mass in the church. The gathering of devotees chanted Ave Maria in unison. As a symbol of peace, a large number of white doves were released. After the devotees offered milk and fruits around the mast, Rev. Fr. Albert Johnson, Principal, Pastor Lenssen Polytechnic College, Kuthenkuly, placed the golden crown on the statue of Our Lady of Snows during the special prayers conducted at noon. The milk and fruits were distributed to the devotees. In view of the event, traffic was temporarily suspended on beach road in the morning. Under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Albert John, extensive security arrangements were made to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations. The event was attended by Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath, Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, SP Albert John and thousands of devotees.
