Martin Scorsese Got One of Pope Francis' Final Interviews
Martin Scorsese will produce a new documentary featuring an on-camera interview with Pope Francis that was recorded at Vatican City in December, a few months before the pope died at the age of 88. The film, 'Aldeas — A New Story,' is about the worldwide cultural project developed by Scholas Occurrentes, a global educational movement founded by Francis in 2013, the same year he was elected pope. Communities around the world will create scripts for short films that highlight their identities, histories and values. Snippets of the conversation between the pope and Scorsese will be interwoven into the film, which does not have a release date. In a statement on Wednesday, Scorsese said it was important to Francis for 'people across the globe to exchange ideas with respect while also preserving their cultural identity, and cinema is the best medium to do that.' Before the pope's death, Francis called 'Aldeas' a poetic project because it 'goes to the roots of what human life is.' The project punctuates a long relationship between the pope and Scorsese, whose work has sometimes been religious in nature. When 'The Last Temptation of Christ' was released in 1988, it drew protests and outrage from religious groups. In 2016, Scorsese met with Francis to discuss his movie 'Silence,' a drama about a Portuguese Jesuit priest who heads to 17th-century Japan, where Christians are persecuted. They met again in 2023, when Scorsese announced he would make another film about Jesus. The director's most recent project, 'Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints,' dramatizes the lives of eight Catholic saints. When Francis died, Scorsese said in a statement to Variety that he was lucky to have known him and that his loss for the world was immense. 'He had an ironclad commitment to the good,' Scorsese said. 'He knew in his soul that ignorance was a terrible plague on humanity. So he never stopped learning. And he never stopped enlightening.'

New Delhi: Martin Scorsese is producing a new documentary that will include the late Pope Francis' last on-camera interview. The film, Aldeas - A New Story, is co-produced by Aldeas Scholas Films, the production company of Pope Francis' international non-profit organisation Scholas Occurrentes, founded in 2013 to focus on youth worldwide. The documentary will follow the creation of several short films through a cinema program called Aldeas, highlighting Pope Francis' dedication to community building and creativity as "not only a means of expression but a path to hope and transformation," according to a media release per CNN. "Through hands-on workshops, communities from around the globe will create scripted short films that celebrate their unique identities, histories, and values," the release stated. It added, "The behind-the-scenes stories of these shorts will be interwoven with previously unseen conversations between Pope Francis and Scorsese." Before his death earlier this month, Pope Francis commented on the project, saying, "'Aldeas' is an extremely poetic and very constructive project because it goes to the roots of what human life is, human sociability, human conflicts... the essence of a life's journey." Scorsese shared, "Now, more than ever, we need to talk to each other, listen to one another cross-culturally. One of the best ways to accomplish this is by sharing the stories of who we are, reflected from our personal lives and experiences." "It helps us understand and value how each of us sees the world," he added. The Oscar-winning director noted that it was "important" to Pope Francis for people worldwide "to exchange ideas with respect while also preserving their cultural identity, and cinema is the best medium to do that." Aldeas Scholas Films was "inspired by the belief that 'it takes a whole village to educate a child,'" and works to implement key aspects of Francis' papacy, particularly outreach to marginalised communities and fostering unity during divisive times, according to the media release. Indonesia, The Gambia and Italy are among participating countries, with the short films eventually premiering in new local cinemas that will serve as "lasting hubs for cultural expression and education." No release date has been announced for the documentary. Tens of thousands of mourners, including numerous dignitaries, gathered at the Vatican on Saturday for Pope Francis' funeral. According to CNN, the Vatican announced that cardinals have scheduled May 7 as the date to begin conclave and elect a new leader for the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.

Pope Francis' Last On-Camera Interview to Be Included in Martin Scorsese-Produced Doc
Martin Scorsese and his Sikelia Productions will serve as producers on 'Aldeas — A New Story,' an upcoming documentary that will feature the final on-camera interviews with the late Pope Francis. 'Aldeas' showcases the work of a cinema initiative of the same name developed by Scholas Occurrentes, an educational movement founded by Pope Francis that seeks to find human stories from across the world that can help bring unity in a divided world. The 'Aldeas' cinema initiative has supported short films from Italy, the Gambia and Indonesia through a group of international sponsors who have also helped fund local cinemas for the short films to premiere in. The making of these shorts through the 'Aldeas' program will be interspersed with never-before-seen conversations between Scorsese and Pope Francis. Scorsese and Francis met several times during the latter's papacy, bonding over their mutual appreciation for cinema and its ability to build cultural connections. In 2016, Scorsese hosted a private screening at the Vatican of his passion project 'Silence,' based on Shusaku Endo's novel about the persecution of Christian converts in Tokugawa-era Japan and the crisis of faith experienced by a Jesuit priest who travels to Japan to find his mentor who has renounced his faith. 'He was, in every way, a remarkable human being. He acknowledged his own failings. He radiated wisdom. He radiated goodness. He had an ironclad commitment to the good,' Scorsese said of Francis in a statement following his death. 'He knew in his soul that ignorance was a terrible plague on humanity. So he never stopped learning. And he never stopped enlightening. And, he embraced, preached and practiced forgiveness. Universal and constant forgiveness.' Alongside Scorsese, 'Aldeas — A New Story' is produced by Massive Owl Production's Amy Foster, Teresa Leveratto, Ezequiel del Corral and Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, with Lisa Frechette, Romilda de Luca, Ariel Tcach and Ariel Broitman as executive producers. Clare Tavernor and Johnny Shipley are directors. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died on April 21 at the age of 88, ending his 12-year pontificate. Born in Argentina, he was the first pope in the history of the Catholic Church to be elected from the Southern Hemisphere and the first elected from the Jesuit Order. The traditional conclave of the College of Cardinals to elect Francis' successor will be held at the Vatican next week.
