Rangers call up Alejandro Osuna, put Joc Pederson on IL
May 25 - The Texas Rangers called up top outfield prospect Alejandro Osuna from Triple-A Round Rock to make his major league debut on Sunday afternoon against the host Chicago White Sox. Also Sunday, the Rangers placed designated hitter/first baseman Joc Pederson on the 10-day injured list and designated outfielder Kevin Pillar for assignment. Osuna, 22, was set to bat sixth in the lineup and play in left field against the White Sox. The Rangers' Minor League Player of the Year in 2024, Osuna has combined to bat .279 with two home runs and 15 RBIs over 39 games with Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock this season. He is listed by MLB Pipeline as the No. 7 overall prospect in the Rangers' system. Pederson, 33, sustained a fractured right hand in Texas' 10-5 loss to the White Sox on Saturday when he was hit by a pitch from Bryse Wilson in the fourth inning. He stayed in the game long enough to score on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly, but Kyle Higashioka handled the designated hitter role the rest of the way. Signed to a two-year, $37 million deal in the offseason, Pederson is batting a career-low .131 with two homers and six RBIs in 46 games this season. Pillar, 36, hit .209 with no home runs and one RBI over 20 games with the Rangers this season. --Field Level Media

Texas Rangers place DH Joc Pederson on injured list with broken hand
CHICAGO (AP) — The Texas Rangers placed Joc Pederson on the 10-day injured list Sunday, a day after their designated hitter broke his right hand when he was hit by a pitch. The Rangers selected the contract of outfielder Alejandro Osuna from Triple-A Round Rock and designated outfielder Kevin Pillar for assignment to make room for Osuna on the 40-man roster. Leading off the fourth inning of Saturday's 10-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox, Pederson was hit by an 87.5 mph cutter from White Sox right-hander Bryse Wilson. Pederson went down right after he was hit, but stayed in the game and scored on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly. The 33-year-old Pederson, who signed a $37 million, two-year contract with Texas in December, was replaced by a pinch hitter in the fifth. Pederson got hurt on the same day that star shortstop Corey Seager faced live pitching in another step in his recovery from a hamstring injury. The two-time World Series MVP could return to Texas' lineup as soon as next week. Osuna is in line to make his major league debut after hitting .259 in eight games with Round Rock. The 22-year-old from Mexico started the season at Double-A Frisco, where he hit .283 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 31 games. ___ AP MLB:

Texas Rangers promote Alejandro Osuna to replace injured Joc Pederson: Report
Texas Rangers promote Alejandro Osuna to replace injured Joc Pederson: Report (Image Source: Getty Images) The Texas Rangers had a rough Saturday. Their defense collapsed with one bad inning, the bullpen was unable to hold a lead once more and designated hitter Joc Pederson broke a hand after being hit by a pitch. Pederson has been put on the injured list and will be out for at least six weeks. Although this is a significant loss, it has provided an opportunity for outfielder Alejandro Osuna to debut in the majors. Alejandro Osuna gets his big chance with Rangers The Rangers moved swiftly in the wake of Pederson's injury. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the team, late Saturday night, recalled Alejandro Osuna. Osuna started the season in Double-A Frisco but leaped Triple-A after putting up good numbers. In just seven games at Triple-A Round Rock, he proved himself worthy of this call-up. Alejandro Osuna's summoning wasn't entirely surprising. Many Rangers fans wished he would be a part of the team soon this summer, perhaps July or August. But injuries and subpar offense accelerated the timeline. Osuna will now get the opportunity to bring fresh energy to the team. With a slash of .280/.385/.413 and 8 stolen bases in 12 attempts, Alejandro Osuna provides the speed and contact ability that the present team lacks. He was hitting only .132 with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in 144 plate appearances. His problems were already of concern, and his absence may not hurt the lineup as much as anticipated. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy now has a new component to work with in Alejandro Osuna. The young center fielder is viewed more as a "table-setter" rather than a power hitter, something the team is in dire need of. The Rangers also thought about recalling Blaine Crim, but Osuna's speed and on-base skills made him the better choice. It's still unclear whether Alejandro Osuna will begin immediately or be gradually incorporated into the rotation. Either way, however, the fans are eager to see what he can do. With the Rangers having fallen behind in the playoff hunt, perhaps this represents the start of a youth movement and perhaps Osuna is just the player to spearhead the effort.
