'Historic' - UFC bantamweight fighter Aleksandre Topuria reveals bold vision for brother Ilia Topuria's fighting career
Aleksandre Topuria and Ilia Topuria (Image via Aleksandre Topuria/Instagram) Ilia Topuria , after a long wait, finally gets the title run within the lightweight division after the shocking results of UFC 315. While the fighter has been calling out the former lightweight champion Islam Makhachev ever since the move up from featherweight, however, the bout did not pan out as Belal Muhammad lost the welterweight title to Jack Della Maddalena, ultimately leading to Makhachev moving up the weight division. With Makhachev moving up the weight division, Topuria has been paired up against Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title . While Topuria gears up for the upcoming bout, his brother, Aleksandre Topuria , who currently competes in the bantamweight division , has a different perspective on the entire shakeup. Aleksandre Topuria wants his brother Ilia Topuria to eye for a third title after claiming and defending the lightweight championship belt With an undefeated record of 16-0, Ilia Topuria is one of the finest fighters in the UFC, eyeing a second championship belt after claiming the featherweight title and successfully defending it. Even though the highly anticipated bout between Topuria and Islam Makhachev did didnot pan out, the Georgian fighter will now be seen clashing against Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title. The trend of going ahead for a two-division championship status is now taking over the UFC, as Makhachev too decided to move up the weight class for a second title in the welterweight division. However, the transition would not have turned into a reality if Belal Muhammad could successfully retain the title against Jack Della Maddalena. While the shakeup is still in motion, Topuria's brother, Aleksandre Topuria, who recently won his first bout in the UFC against Colby Thicknesse, has a different and more so, a more ambitious perspective for his brother. In a recent interview with Enrique Gimeno MMA, the bantamweight fighter forwarded his opinion on how his brother' next two fight and the future should look like, 'The perfect scenario would be for Ilia to win, for Islam to win in the welterweight division, and then for Ilia to fight for a third belt. Historic.' Aleksandre Topuria says Colby Thicknesse and his warrior's soul welcome to train in Spain after UFC 312
Aleksandre Topuria beat Colby Thicknesse with a unanimous decision Saturday on the preliminary card at UFC 312 at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. Take a look inside the fight with Topuria, brother of UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who picked up a win in his promotional debut. Result: Aleksandre Topuria def. Colby Thicknesse via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) Updated records: Topuria (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC), Thicknesse (7-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) Key stats: Topuria stuffed all eight of Thicknesse's takedown attempts. "I think it was mixed martial arts – a little bit of standup, takedowns, ground control. But I know this guy was coming in very angry about how I had the opportunity, and 'Let's show the world that Aleksandre Topuria is not his brother. Let's use this chance to show the world who I am.' This guy was coming for the win. I was feeling that." "The whole week was very emotional – very satisfying. I really was feeling good all the time. But for sure, let's be real: When you have your UFC debut, and you have a UFC world champion as your brother, it's not about the pressure because he's a champion – it's about the expectations that people have. I fought my UFC debut, and I know I jumped over most of the fighters (in my position) who have maybe five fights, six fights. It's not because I want to – it's because I understand the business, too. I wasn't feeling the pressure, but I was feeling the responsibility." "I think (Thicknesse) deserves (to be in the UFC) ... I felt a warrior's soul in him – very good. Very good. I'm nobody to say this, but I think I have to say it, and I'll ask if I have a chance to ask somebody – that he deserves a UFC contract. "What can I say? Great fighter, great warrior, respectful – I want to hang out with this guy. WHat can I say? (He's a) very good guy. In Spain, if he wants to come, he just has to ask for my name and (he's welcome in) my home." Tweets by ufc To hear more from Topuria, check out his post-fight interview above.
