A level results day
College students receiving their results today were in year 8 when the pandemic started.
They then became the first post-pandemic cohort to have their GCSE grading returned to normal.
Jo Saxton, chief executive of UCAS said that record numbers of students had secured a place at university this year.
Around 82 per cent of applications made it into their first choice.
The number of students obtaining the highest grades has also risen, with 28.3 per cent obtaining an A or A* grade.
These high grades were more concentrated in London, at 32.1 per cent compared to just 22.9 per cent in the North East, as regional inequalities get worse.
GCSE results day follows on August 21, with unique offers available across both days.

It includes a wide range of freebies at well-loved restaurants.
So, whether you're after a free matcha, or a free dessert, there's plenty to choose from.

What to do if you didn't get the right results?
Prospective undergraduates who don't get into their first choice of university can use clearing to get onto other courses.
Clearing matches applicants to university places that are yet to be filled and is available to students who do not meet the conditions of their offer on A-level results day.
Students who did not receive any offers can also use clearing to find a place at university.
Any students who may have changed their minds about what to study and those who applied outside the normal application window can use clearing as well.
