Alex Bowman Speaks Out After Severe Michigan Wreck: 'It Gets Wild'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Alex Bowman has opened up on the massive crash during the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Michigan International Speedway that brought out the red flag. Five drivers were involved in the incident that caused Bowman to lose control of his car and crash head-on into the barriers. The incident occurred after a contact between the No. 2 and No. 41 cars, which then spilled onto the No. 99 and the No. 48. The No. 19 car wasn't spared either. Bowman, Daniel Suarez, Cole Custer, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe were involved in the incident, and fortunately, all escaped unharmed. For Bowman, the incident was severe enough to knock him out of the race. Admitting that it was the hardest hit he ever had in a stock car, he told Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports: Alex Bowman, driver of the #48 Ally Chevrolet, looks on during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Pit Road Qualifying Entry/Exit Practice (Open) at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 16, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.... Alex Bowman, driver of the #48 Ally Chevrolet, looks on during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Pit Road Qualifying Entry/Exit Practice (Open) at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 16, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. More"It happened so fast that I didn't even see them. I didn't know who hit me until I saw the video. It's always turbulent in the 300th. It's crazy back there. It gets wild and that is part of racing. It's wild all through the field. "Unfortunately, the further back you get, the less downforce cars have, the dirtier the air, the situations you're in, and the worst everybody stuff drives. So stuff like this tends to happen." He added: "I feel okay. It was the biggest hit I've ever taken in a stock car by a mile. Head-on into the wall at Michigan, it's gonna be that way. Try to go get them next week." Alex Bowman said it always is turbulent in the pack at Michigan and he is OK after what he said was the hardest hit he has ever had in a stock car. @NASCARONFOX — Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) June 8, 2025 Bowman wasn't the only Hendrick Motorsports driver to suffer a setback. William Byron, who led the race for 98 laps, lost the lead to Denny Hamlin after running out of fuel when there were just four laps to go. He finished the race in 28th place after refueling. Speaking to Sports on Prime after the disappointing race finish, Byron said: "We didn't have enough. We were going to run out with a lap and a half left, we did run out with a lap and a half left. I was trying to manage both [and] manage the gap and save [gas]. It sucks, it really stings. Not able to do much about that. It is what it is." Running out of gas was the detriment for @WilliamByron today. #NASCARonPrime — Sports on Prime (@SportsonPrime) June 8, 2025 FireKeepers Casino 400 Cup Series Race Results 1. Denny Hamlin 2. Winners, losers from NASCAR Cup weekend at Michigan International Speedway

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Here is a look at the winners and losers from Sunday's Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. WINNERS Denny Hamlin — He saved enough fuel and passed William Byron for the lead with four laps left to win. Hamlin has won three of the last nine races. Villain Denny returned Sunday. He teased the crowd by saying he beat all their favorite drivers and then taunted University of Michigan fans in the stands by doing an Ohio State cheer. 'I do thrive on it,' Hamlin said of being viewed as the villain, 'just simply because you feel like you've got 60,000 people that are rooting against you.' Sunday, Chris Buescher finished second, Ryan Preece ninth and Brad Keselowski 10th. Preece moved into the final playoff spot with 10 races left in the regular season. This was Buescher's third consecutive top 10 at Michigan. He also won a stage. Both of Keselowski's top 10s this season have come in the last three races this season. Ty Gibbs — While frustrated after the race thinking he didn't need to save as much fuel and could have challenged the leaders, Gibbs placed third, tying his best result of the season. Zane Smith — His seventh-place finish is his best result of the year and gives him top-10 results in both career Cup starts at Michigan. Sunday's result moved Smith up three positions in the standings to 22nd. Kyle Busch — His eighth-place finish snapped a six-race streak without a top-10 result. LOSERS Alex Bowman — Austin Cindric and Cole Custer made contact, sending Custer's car into Bowman's vehicle. That turned Bowman and he hit the wall head-on. 'That hurt a lot,' Bowman said after exiting the infield care center. He finished last in the 36-car field. Bowman has placed outside the top 25 in seven of the last nine races and fallen from third to 13th in the points. He sits 15th on the playoff grid and is only 13 points above the cutline. NASCAR takeaways: Denny Hamlin wins at Michigan, irritates some. And a bonus takeaway!

Denny Hamlin was driving like a man in a hurry Sunday at Michigan. That happens when you're gonna become a dad (again) at any given moment. While longtime fiancee Jordan Fish is back home awaiting birth of an overdue child (their third), dad was winning the 57th Cup Series race of his future-Hall of Fame career. Advertisement Hamlin battled late with William Byron, eventually passed him, then waved goodbye as Byron ran out of gas, leaving the runner-up spot to Chri Buescher, who was one second behind in Hamlin's wake. VOTE! Do you like NASCAR TV broadcasts on Amazon Prime Video? Denny Hamlin, in his No. 11 Toyota, passes Erik Jones on his way to Sunday's win. 1. Denny Hamlin happily plays the villain role During his post-race TV interview, Hamlin trotted out one of his favorite lines. He looked up to the grandstands, where a mix of cheers and boos were heard, and said, 'Sorry, but I beat your favorite driver.' On cue, he was asked, 'who's that?' 'All of them,' he replied (again). He doesn't care how repetitive that act becomes. Advertisement Byron's premature dive down to the pits as the white flag was waving brought some drama. Did Hamlin have enough fuel? Turns out, he wasn't all that concerned. 'Once I got to the lead, that's when I started conserving,' he said. 2. Alex Bowman is alive and well and that's a testament to modern technology Bowman was just a kid when the SAFER Barrier and HANS Device became commonplace in NASCAR. All the same, he might want to pen a thank-you letter to the engineers who brought those saviors into the sport. 'I feel OK. It was the biggest hit I've ever taken in a stock-car by a mile,' Bowman said of a head-on, Lap 67 crash into the outside wall that wasn't his fault. Advertisement He blamed the inherent turbulence and overall unpredictability of running near the rear of the field at a fast track like Michigan, where straightaway speeds reached 200 mph. 3. Up next: NASCAR goes South of the Border There's the South and even the Deep South. Both have long been considered NASCAR strongholds. Now we'll see how things go in the "Deeper" South, as in Mexico City. NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity Series go international this coming week with Saturday and Sunday races on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course. It'll be the Cup Series' first road-course race since March 2, and the first of three over the next five weeks. 4. Bonus Takeaway! And yes, it's a Hemi The rumors ended Sunday at Michigan, where the folks at Dodge announced they're going back to NASCAR. Advertisement Thirteen years after Dodge left the Cup Series (on the heels of Brad Keselowski winning the championship in a Dodge, by the way), the manufacturer is re-entering NASCAR through the Truck Series, re-introducing the Ram pickup as well as the Hemi engine, whose return was announced earlier in the week. In terms of 'how' Dodge will return — a whole new factory team or an existing team — the details will have to come fairly soon, since Ram brand CEO Tim Kuniskis said he'll have a truck on the starting grid when the 2026 season opens at Daytona. 'You know, it's like the kid going to the prom,' Kuniskis said. 'I've got the tux, got my dad's car. Just don't know who the date is going to be yet, but we'll get there.' NASCAR star Alex Bowman suffers frightening crash during Michigan race: 'That hurt a lot'

NASCAR Cup Series star Alex Bowman took a hard hit on Sunday during the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The driver of No. 48 was driving behind Cole Custer and Daniel Suarez on Lap 67 when Custer got loose and hit both Suarez and Bowman. Suarez and Custer spun while Chase Briscoe got loose trying to move past the carnage in front of him. Austin Cindric was at the bottom of Custer and appeared to have avoided disaster. Bowman hit the wall head on hard and bounced back down the track. It took a brief moment, but Bowman was able to exit the vehicle under his own power. The red flag was waved and the race was briefly put on hold as emergency crews worked to clean up the wreck and make sure each driver involved got off the track. Bowman talked to Amazon Prime Video after he exited the infield care center. "Yeah, that hurt a lot. Probably top of the board on hits I've taken," he said. "Looks like the 41 got loose, or the 2 got into him or something. At that point, I was just along for the ride, I couldn't do anything. Just, 'Oh s---, this is about to hurt really bad.' "Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a really rough two months." The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished 36th last week in Nashville and will finish 36th at Michigan. He's finished outside the top 20 in four of the last five races. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Alex Bowman unhurt after massive hit that red flags Michigan Cup race

In the second stage of the NASCAR Cup race at Michigan, drivers were scrambling on a restart as they battled three and four-wide for position on track. Alex Bowman was deep in the pack, running 29th when his race came to sudden and violent end. Bowman was in the middle of a tense battle with a four-wide situation directly in front of him. Cole Custer got loose and shot up the track, spinning Daniel Suarez. At the same time, he hit Bowman as well. Bowman's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports shot to the right, slamming the outside wall head-on in an impact that managed to left the rear tires off the ground. Advertisement Bowman was going about 150mph when the car slammed the wall. Pole-sitter Chase Briscoe was also collected, spinning at the exit of Turn 2. "That one was really f****** big," radioed Bowman as he put the window net down and climbed the car. It was a relief to see, as Bowman has been sidelined due to both a back injury and concussion in recent year. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," said Bowman after being released from the infield care center. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken and unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits. I hate that for the #48 team. Obviously, (sponsor) Ally is from here. Looks like the #41 [Custer] got loose or the #2 [Austin Cindric] got into him or something. At that point, just along for the ride. Couldn't really do anything except think about oh shit this is about to hurt really bad. Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a rough two months. Advertisement Suarez and Briscoe were able to continue, while both Custer and Bowman fell out of the race. This continues an unfortunate run of races for the No. 48 HMS Chevrolet, finishing 27th or worse in seven of the last nine races. The race was red-flagged on Lap 68 of 200 as Bowman's car came to rest in the middle of the track. The stoppage lasted about 13 minutes. Read Also: Who's next?
