Alex Bowman Speaks Out After Severe Michigan Wreck: 'It Gets Wild'

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
Alex Bowman has opened up on the massive crash during the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Michigan International Speedway that brought out the red flag. Five drivers were involved in the incident that caused Bowman to lose control of his car and crash head-on into the barriers.
The incident occurred after a contact between the No. 2 and No. 41 cars, which then spilled onto the No. 99 and the No. 48. The No. 19 car wasn't spared either. Bowman, Daniel Suarez, Cole Custer, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe were involved in the incident, and fortunately, all escaped unharmed.
For Bowman, the incident was severe enough to knock him out of the race. Admitting that it was the hardest hit he ever had in a stock car, he told Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports:
Alex Bowman, driver of the #48 Ally Chevrolet, looks on during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Pit Road Qualifying Entry/Exit Practice (Open) at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 16, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina....
Alex Bowman, driver of the #48 Ally Chevrolet, looks on during the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Pit Road Qualifying Entry/Exit Practice (Open) at North Wilkesboro Speedway on May 16, 2025 in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. More"It happened so fast that I didn't even see them. I didn't know who hit me until I saw the video. It's always turbulent in the 300th. It's crazy back there. It gets wild and that is part of racing. It's wild all through the field.
"Unfortunately, the further back you get, the less downforce cars have, the dirtier the air, the situations you're in, and the worst everybody stuff drives. So stuff like this tends to happen."
He added:
"I feel okay. It was the biggest hit I've ever taken in a stock car by a mile. Head-on into the wall at Michigan, it's gonna be that way. Try to go get them next week."

Bowman wasn't the only Hendrick Motorsports driver to suffer a setback. William Byron, who led the race for 98 laps, lost the lead to Denny Hamlin after running out of fuel when there were just four laps to go. He finished the race in 28th place after refueling. Speaking to Sports on Prime after the disappointing race finish, Byron said:
"We didn't have enough. We were going to run out with a lap and a half left, we did run out with a lap and a half left. I was trying to manage both [and] manage the gap and save [gas]. It sucks, it really stings. Not able to do much about that. It is what it is."

Mets rookie McLean shows off arsenal, athleticism in impressive debut

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza turned to bench coach John Gibbons as they watched pitcher Nolan McLean get into his first big league jam on Saturday. 'I think I told Gibbons 'All right, let's see what we've got here right away,'' Mendoza said. The Mets might have themselves a keeper. The 24-year-old right-hander made a highlight reel double play to escape the third inning and earned the win in his major league debut on Saturday when he tossed 5 1/3 scoreless frames to help the Mets to a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners. McLean allowed two hits, walked four and struck out eight in the longest scoreless outing by a Mets starter since June 11, when David Peterson shut out the Washington Nationals. New York's rotation entered Saturday averaging 4.96 innings per appearance. 'We needed that — as a team, as an organization, given where we're at and how hard it's been for us,' Mendoza said after the Mets won for just the third time in 17 games. McLean showed off a five-pitch arsenal that included a high-70s curveball, a high-80s sweeper, a 90-mph cutter and sinkers and fastballs both measured in the high 90s. He limited the Mariners to one hit in 10 plate appearances with a runner on base. The former two-way player — a third-round pick of the Mets out of Oklahoma State in 2023 — also displayed his athleticism in the third. McLean walked J.P. Crawford and Cole Young before Cal Raleigh's one-out single loaded the bases for Julio Rodríguez, who has 10 homers since the All-Star Break. But McLean made a no-look, behind-the-back grab of Rodríguez's comebacker and began the 1-4-3 double play. First baseman Pete Alonso grinned widely as he looked at the ball in his glove and McLean smiled while walking off the mound. 'I try to stay as athletic as possible,' McLean said. 'But I think that play was majority luck, honestly.' McLean allowed just two more baserunners over his final nine batters. He is the seventh Mets starter to throw at least five scoreless innings in his major league debut and the sixth to strike out at least eight batters. 'He was just at ease and executed from pitch one,' said shortstop Francisco Lindor, who put the Mets ahead with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. 'I felt like the more the crowd got involved, the more he fed off it.' A sellout crowd of 42,978 gave McLean three standing ovations — when he walked off the mound in the sixth and again when he was pictured on the scoreboard prior to the seventh and ninth innings. 'That was unbelievable,' McLean said. 'It was definitely special to get that.' 'Surreal — I mean, I couldn't have dreamed it up any better, from the fans to being able to compete against a good Seattle team,' McLean said. 'I think so,' he said. 'Don't you?' ___

Former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes pulling away in race for NL Cy Young award

Former LSU baseball star Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes' odds to win the National League's Cy Young award shifted in his favor over the last week. Skenes has -300 odds to take home the annual award, per BetMGM. He holds a steady lead over the Philadelphia Phillies' duo of Cristopher Sanchez (+450) and Zack Wheeler (+600) Skenes' 2.13 ERA ranks first in the National League. His 0.96 WHIP is second and his 166 strikeouts are fourth. The right-hander has thrown 148 innings in 2025, following up his rookie of the year campaign from 2024. For the second-straight year, Skenes made the start on the mound for the National eagle in the All-Star game. He remains one of the best pitchers in baseball over halfway through his second season as a professional. After leading LSU to the national championship, Skenes was selected at first overall by the Pirates in the 2023 MLB Draft.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly reveals why linebacker Whit Weeks missed practice on Friday

LSU football head coach Brian Kelly gave a reason why junior linebacker Whit Weeks missed practice on Friday. 'Yeah, just managing the load," Kelly said. "We're not going to have him practice five days in a row until we get into game week. So today was his day off. He'll be back out there tomorrow. He'll scrimmage tomorrow.' The Tigers are monitoring Weeks' workload going into what could be a big year. He suffered a lower-body injury in the Texas Bowl against Baylor on New Year's Eve that required surgery. Weeks missed the entirety of spring practice but worked back to full speed over the summer. Weeks returns as the team's leading tackler from last year. He's receiving All-American hype as one of 2024's most productive linebackers, ranking No. 2 among SEC linebackers in pressures and stops. A second full season under defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who has a strong history of developing NFL-level linebackers, could solidify Weeks as one of the best linebackers to ever play at LSU and his NFL draft stock as a potential first-rounder.
