LSU head coach Brian Kelly reveals why linebacker Whit Weeks missed practice on Friday

USA Today15 hours ago
LSU football head coach Brian Kelly gave a reason why junior linebacker Whit Weeks missed practice on Friday.
'Yeah, just managing the load," Kelly said. "We're not going to have him practice five days in a row until we get into game week. So today was his day off. He'll be back out there tomorrow. He'll scrimmage tomorrow.'
The Tigers are monitoring Weeks' workload going into what could be a big year. He suffered a lower-body injury in the Texas Bowl against Baylor on New Year's Eve that required surgery. Weeks missed the entirety of spring practice but worked back to full speed over the summer.
Weeks returns as the team's leading tackler from last year. He's receiving All-American hype as one of 2024's most productive linebackers, ranking No. 2 among SEC linebackers in pressures and stops.
A second full season under defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who has a strong history of developing NFL-level linebackers, could solidify Weeks as one of the best linebackers to ever play at LSU and his NFL draft stock as a potential first-rounder.

3 Arizona Cardinals players who improved their stock in preseason loss to the Broncos

The Arizona Cardinals lost their second preseason game Saturday night, a 27-7 defeat to the Denver Broncos in which they allowed 562 yards and only gained 135. They didn't play any of their starters expect for rookie cornerback Will Johnson and new linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither. There weren't a lot of positives, but a few players helped their stock as we approach final cuts and the 53-man roster. Which players stood out? QB Jacoby Brissett Brissett doesn't have any worry about making the roster, as he has the backiup quarterback job locked up. However, he led the Cardinals to another touchdown, giving him three touchdown passes in five preseason possessions. They have come against opponent backups, but the ease with which he operates the offense and moved the ball down the field, there is confidence that the offense will be okay should Kyler Murray ever get hurt. WR Simi Fehoko Fehoko had his first preseason action, missing last week's game with a quad injury. He had two receptions for 21 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown reception. He also made a special teams tackle. He is a player most fans won't know, but the TV broadcast emphasized he is good on special teams. He showed enough to probably secure a spot on the roster, especially considering he ha almost all his salary guaranteed in 2025. K Chad Ryland He only had the one extra point and did not have a field-goal attempt, But before the game, he drilled a 72-yard field goal. There is no issue with his leg. That was about it. It was mostly players hurting themselves. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. One thing that is critical to understand in handicapping is when matchups occur on the schedule in relation to various factors. Those could include a road trip's length, All-Star break or other unique circumstances. The Los Angeles Sparks visit the Washington Mystics as four-point road favorites with a total of 169.5 points. Washington recently traded arguably its best player — point guard Brittney Sykes — and is seemingly more focused on rebuilding for the future with its rookie core. That pivot has led to looser defense and now scoring is starting to pick up, given it took a couple games to adjust to life without Sykes. That has led to the Over being cashed in three straight games involving the Mystics. Meanwhile, Los Angeles is trying to make a playoff push, having won 10 of its past 13 games. The Sparks are currently a half-game back of the final playoff spot with 11 games remaining. Kelsey Plum was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks this offseason. NBAE via Getty Images They are making this run with their offense, which prioritizes pace and 3-point shooting. The Over has cashed in five of their past six games, bringing their overall Over record to 23-9-1 this season. That's by far the best in the league. A main reason for that is ranking fourth in offensive rating, thanks to sitting fourth in 3-point shooting percentage. Plus, their defense ranks third worst in efficiency. I have a 60-50-1 ATS record in this Post sports section and my next play is Over 169.5. Their past two meetings landed at 179, albeit with Sykes playing, but I believe their current styles make this a strong play. Spike Lee says ESPN won't air his Colin Kaepernick series

ESPN has confirmed it will not move forward with a highly anticipated docuseries about Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback who ignited a national movement in 2016 by kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality. The eight-part series, directed by Oscar-winner Spike Lee, was announced in 2022 and promoted as a first-person account of Kaepernick's journey from NFL star to civil rights figure. But on Saturday, Aug. 16, both ESPN and Lee said the project had been canceled due to 'creative differences.' 'ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences,' the network said in a statement. 'Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.' Lee revealed the news the night before, on Friday, Aug. 15, while attending a fundraiser in Beverly Hills. 'It's not coming out. That's all I can say,' he told Reuters, citing a nondisclosure agreement that barred him from elaborating. The project had already encountered setbacks. In 2023, Puck News reported that Lee and Kaepernick had disagreed over the film's direction, delaying production. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was reportedly open to allowing the filmmakers to shop the series elsewhere. Kaepernick, now 37, has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season. The 49ers released him in 2017, citing football-related reasons, though many believe his political activism significantly influenced the league's decision to keep him unsigned. 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now!' Trump told a crowd at a rally. 'Out! He's fired!' Kaepernick later filed a collusion grievance against the NFL, which was settled in 2019.
