Former LSU Star Predicts Garrett Nussmeier to Follow Jayden Daniels' Footsteps
Jayden Daniels' rapid rise to NFL stardom was forged through his time in Tempe as an Arizona State Sun Devil and his big breakthrough under Brian Kelly at LSU. It was in Baton Rouge where Daniels became the first Tiger to claim the Heisman Trophy since Joe Burrow in 2019. And as a rookie in the NFL, Daniels guided the Washington Commanders to their first conference championship game in 33 years. It is too early to tell whether a similar path to stardom awaits Garrett Nussmeier, but his first season as LSU's starting quarterback demonstrated his immense potential. Though Nussmeier's 12 interceptions were the most by an SEC quarterback, his 29 passing touchdowns ranked second in the conference, and no one else attempted more passes (525) or accrued more completions (337) than the Lake Charles native. Stylistically, Nussmeier is a different quarterback from Daniels, but Jacksonville Jaguars star Brian Thomas Jr. believes Nussmeier will make a Daniels-esque leap in 2025. Advertisement "I definitely feel like Garrett can do the exact thing as Jayden," the former LSU standout told WAFB Channel 9 in Baton Rouge. "Being with Garrett, we came in together, just seeing him get better each and every year and make progress throughout the year, I definitely feel he can do the same thing." Nussmeier signed off in 2024 by leading LSU to a win in the Texas Bowl, where he threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns in a 44-31 win over Baylor. Expectations are high in Baton Rouge entering the 2025 season -- and in his final season of NCAA eligibility, Nussmeier taking the next step could make the difference as LSU attempts to return to the College Football Playoff. 2025 SEC Championship odds: Texas tops the board ahead of Georgia, Alabama
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. There is plenty of hype around the Texas Longhorns in 2025. Not only does Texas have the Heisman favorite, Arch Manning, under center, but the Longhorns are also projected to win the SEC in 2025. Bookmakers at FanDuel have installed the Longhorns as a +270 favorite to win the SEC, putting them just ahead of Georgia (+400) and Alabama (+500). Texas made it to the SEC championship game in 2024, the school's first season in the conference, but lost to Georgia, 22-19, in overtime. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns own the second-shortest odds to win the national championship behind Ohio State. The price on Alabama will certainly be an interesting watch as the summer wears on, as Kalen DeBoer will feel some heat after an inconsistent debut campaign saw the Crimson Tide finish 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. Alabama's days as a public darling may be dwindling, so we could see this number drift. Another coach feeling the pressure will be LSU's Brian Kelly. The Bayou Bengals endured another up-and-down campaign in 2024 and had to settle for a date with Baylor in the Texas Bowl. The Tigers have lost at least three games in all three seasons with Kelly at the helm, but they should be in a solid position to contend in the SEC with Garrett Nussmeier, the second-favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, under center for his senior campaign. LSU is +950 to win the SEC, tied with Ole Miss for the fourth-shortest odds. While the teams at the top of the board will likely attract most of the betting support in this market, don't be surprised if South Carolina (17/1) and Florida (20/1) become trendy picks in the SEC. Florida was expected to have a down year in 2024, but exceeded expectations against a tough schedule and introduced the world to star-in-the-making quarterback DJ Lagway. DJ Lagway burst onto the scene for the Florida Gators in 2024. AP With plenty of positive momentum behind them, the Gators could end up as a popular dark horse in this field. South Carolina also had a resurgent campaign 2024 thanks to the emergence of a star quarterback. LaNorris Sellers established himself as one of the country's most exciting players in Columbia, and he'll be a popular Heisman shout at 18/1 odds. 2025 SEC Championship Odds Team Odds Texas +270 Georgia +400 Alabama +500 LSU +950 Ole Miss +950 Tennessee 13/1 Texas A&M 13/1 South Carolina 17/1 Florida 20/1 Auburn 30/1 Oklahoma 30/1 Missouri 40/1 Arkansas 130/1 Vanderbilt 300/1 Kentucky 300/1 Mississippi State 300/1 Odds via FanDuel Why Trust New York Post Betting Michael Leboff is a long-suffering Islanders fan, but a long-profiting sports bettor with 10 years of experience in the gambling industry. SEC Powerhouse Trending Towards Nation's No. 1 Transfer Portal Target
The LSU Tigers had a solid 2024 season, putting together a 9-5 record overall, while going 5-3 in SEC matchups and eventually defeating the Baylor Bears 44-31 in the Texas Bowl. Now, throughout the offseason, they're a team, led by head coach Brian Kelly, that has been extremely active in the transfer portal, bringing in a total of 17 players for a class that ranks No. 3 in the nation, per On3. Advertisement There's a chance they could soon be making another big addition, as Pete Nakos of On3 reports that they're one team trending towards landing a commitment from former Houston Cougars safety A.J. Haulcy. "Miami rolled out the red carpet for Houston safety A.J. Haulcy earlier this week.... But the team that has picked up the most momentum in the last 24 hours is LSU," Nakos wrote. "The opportunity to play in the SEC is making the Tigers a tough team to beat. His agents continue to be in contact with the LSU staff, too." Kansas State Wildcats running back Dylan Edwards (3) and Houston Cougars safety A.J. Haulcy (2) Thomas B. Shea-Imagn Images Of course, this would be huge for LSU and Kelly, as On3 Industry Rankings places Haulcy as a four-star prospect and the No. 1 player still available within the transfer portal, with one more year of eligibility. Advertisement He's also coming off an impressive season for Houston, where he appeared in 12 games, accumulating 74 tackles, five interceptions (tied for third-most in FBS) and seven pass deflections. If Haulcy does end up with LSU, then he'd join a long list of defensive threats they've added through the portal, including four-star safety Tamarcus Coley (NC State), four-star EDGE Patrick Payton (Florida State) and three-star EDGE Jack Pyburn (Florida). Is LSU linebacker Whit Weeks a first round pick in Brugler's first 2026 mock draft?
Is LSU linebacker Whit Weeks a first round pick in Brugler's first 2026 mock draft? LSU's Whit Weeks is projected to be one of the top linebackers in the 2026 NFL Draft, according to an early mock draft from The Athletic's Dane Brugler. The reporter slots Weeks as the No. 25 overall pick to the Washington Commanders. He would be third linebacker taken behind Texas' Anthony Hill and Georgia's CJ Allen and the second Tiger behind quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. "Weeks was a tackling machine for the Tigers last season and looked like a future early-round pick," Brugler said. Weeks turned in a breakout sophomore season as he started all but two games and led the team with 125 tackles. He also totaled 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception. Weeks made 17 tackles apiece against Alabama and Oklahoma. He was off to a strong start in the Kinder's Texas Bowl, making six tackles in the first half, before he was carted off the field with an injury in the second quarter. His draft stock will almost certainly rise should he get off to a strong start in 2025 and prove that the injury won't limit his productivity moving forward.

Angel Reese deeply touched by Karen Lacy mother's performance at late LSU star's funeral
WNBA star Angel Reese labeled Kyren Lacy's mother's rendition of 'I will always love you' at his funeral as 'beautiful'. Lacy died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after crashing his car while attempting to evade local police in Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. This had come just weeks after he had been involved in a fatal crash in December, which he was arrested weeks later for after reportedly fleeing the scene at the time of the incident. Lacy was just 24 years old when he passed, which hit home for a lot of athletes heading to the NFL Draft with many of his LSU teammates paying tribute. The incident also clearly touched Reese - who is set to reunite with former LSU teammate Hailey Van Lith in the WNBA - as she reacted to his mother's rendition of a Whitney Houston classic. Reese, who played college basketball for LSU and delivered the program a national championship in 2023, shared the video along with the caption: 'This is so beautiful.' Lacy had declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Dec. 19, two days after the crash he was involved in. On Jan. 12, he turned himself in to authorities, was jailed, and then released on $151,000 bail, according to police records. Lacy was initially invited to the Scouting Combine, before being uninvited. But the wideout participated at LSU's pro day last month and was ranked as high as the No. 6 receiver prospect in the draft by ESPN. He wrote: 'As stated by his attorney, there was a high probability that the felony charge of negligent homicide would have been declined by a Grand Jury this past Monday. 'Kyren was heartbroken by the tragic loss of Mr. Hall. He was willing to adhere to any civil matters, regardless of the Grand Jury's decision. That aside, the system failed us, and now we are mourning the loss of two lives.' In the 2024 season where LSU went 8-4 before winning the Texas Bowl against Baylor, Lacy led the Tigers in receiving touchdowns (9) and was second on the team in catches (58) and receiving yards (866). Across his five-year collegiate career at the University of Louisiana and LSU, he caught 162 passes for 2,360 yards and tallied 26 touchdowns.
