Mets rookie McLean shows off arsenal, athleticism in impressive debut

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza turned to bench coach John Gibbons as they watched pitcher Nolan McLean get into his first big league jam on Saturday.
'I think I told Gibbons 'All right, let's see what we've got here right away,'' Mendoza said.
The Mets might have themselves a keeper.
The 24-year-old right-hander made a highlight reel double play to escape the third inning and earned the win in his major league debut on Saturday when he tossed 5 1/3 scoreless frames to help the Mets to a much-needed 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
McLean allowed two hits, walked four and struck out eight in the longest scoreless outing by a Mets starter since June 11, when David Peterson shut out the Washington Nationals. New York's rotation entered Saturday averaging 4.96 innings per appearance.
'We needed that — as a team, as an organization, given where we're at and how hard it's been for us,' Mendoza said after the Mets won for just the third time in 17 games.
McLean showed off a five-pitch arsenal that included a high-70s curveball, a high-80s sweeper, a 90-mph cutter and sinkers and fastballs both measured in the high 90s. He limited the Mariners to one hit in 10 plate appearances with a runner on base.
The former two-way player — a third-round pick of the Mets out of Oklahoma State in 2023 — also displayed his athleticism in the third. McLean walked J.P. Crawford and Cole Young before Cal Raleigh's one-out single loaded the bases for Julio Rodríguez, who has 10 homers since the All-Star Break.
But McLean made a no-look, behind-the-back grab of Rodríguez's comebacker and began the 1-4-3 double play. First baseman Pete Alonso grinned widely as he looked at the ball in his glove and McLean smiled while walking off the mound.
'I try to stay as athletic as possible,' McLean said. 'But I think that play was majority luck, honestly.'
McLean allowed just two more baserunners over his final nine batters. He is the seventh Mets starter to throw at least five scoreless innings in his major league debut and the sixth to strike out at least eight batters.
'He was just at ease and executed from pitch one,' said shortstop Francisco Lindor, who put the Mets ahead with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. 'I felt like the more the crowd got involved, the more he fed off it.'
A sellout crowd of 42,978 gave McLean three standing ovations — when he walked off the mound in the sixth and again when he was pictured on the scoreboard prior to the seventh and ninth innings.
'That was unbelievable,' McLean said. 'It was definitely special to get that.'
'Surreal — I mean, I couldn't have dreamed it up any better, from the fans to being able to compete against a good Seattle team,' McLean said.
'I think so,' he said. 'Don't you?'

Storm unveil bronze Sue Bird statue outside of Seattle's Climate Pledge Arena

Sue Bird's legacy in Seattle has been cast in bronze. The Seattle Storm unveiled a statue of Bird outside of Climate Pledge Arena, securing a spot for the franchise legend outside her former stomping grounds. The bronze statue, which features Bird doing an iconic layup, was revealed in a ceremony on Sunday. Bird becomes the first WNBA player to be honored with a statue by her former franchise. The point guard picked a layup for her statue because of the significance that the move had in her career. "My very first points in the WNBA at Key Arena as a rookie were on a layup, my very final points in the WNBA were at Climate Pledge on a layup," Bird said. Among those in attendance at the ceremony was Bird's fiancée, USWNT star Megan Rapinoe. Bird was also joined by two of her former UConn teammates, Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash, and by fellow Storm legend Lauren Jackson, who is the only other player to have her number retired by the Storm. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Bird took the time to pose with the statue on her own, before posing with family and friends. Fans were then given a chance to get their own pictures as well. Bird is one of the most iconic players to come out of the Storm franchise, playing with the team for her entire 21-year career. She led Seattle to four WNBA Championships across a long span — 2004, 2010, 2018, 2020 — and earned 13 All-Star nods and five All-WNBA First Team selections. Bird first joined the Storm as the No. 1 overall pick out of UConn in 2002. She played her final WNBA season in 2022 before retiring. Her No. 10 jersey was retired by the franchise the next year. Though Bird is the only player with a statue created by her WNBA franchise, she is not the only player in the league with a statue. Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson was honored with a statue at her alma mater, South Carolina, in 2021.

Rahm wins LIV Golf season points title, then falls in playoff to Munoz in Indianapolis

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Jon Rahm successfully defended his LIV Golf season points title Sunday without winning an event all year, closing with an 11-under 60 before losing a playoff to Sebastian Munoz on the first extra hole in the Indianapolis event. Munoz won two days after becoming the first player to shoot 59 with a double bogey. The Colombian player —with Rahm hitting balls on driving range — birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 65 to match Rahm at 22 under at The Club at Chatham Hills. Rahm also lost on the first extra hole last week outside Chicago, falling to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. On Sunday, Munoz beat the Spanish star won with a birdie on the par-4 18th in the playoff. Rahm took the season points title from Joaquin Niemann, a five-time winner this season. Niemann shot a 66 to tie for fourth at 17 under, his first top-10 finish of the year that he didn't win. Munoz led Torque GC to the team event championship. Torque finished at 64 under to break the LIV record of 53 under. Ian Poulter birdied four of his last five holes for a 67 to tie for 17th and avoid relegation from the tour. Majesticks teammate Henrik Stenson was relegated, missing a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole that would have keep him on the tour and left Poulter out. ___ AP golf: The Associated Press

Brewers' winning streak snapped in extras after 9th-inning comeback doesn't hold

CINCINNATI — Just when it looked like the Milwaukee Brewers couldn't lose, they did. Cincinnati Reds designated hitter Austin Hays hit a walk-off single to left field with bases loaded in the 10th inning for a 3-2 Reds victory, snapping the Brewers' 14-game winning streak and handing them their first loss since July 30. Advertisement For three games this weekend, the team with the fewest mistakes won. On Sunday, for the first time, that team was the Reds. After the Brewers came back from a seven-run deficit on Friday and avoided a loss Saturday with the help of an Elly De La Cruz error on what would've been a game-ending double play, the Brewers were unable to come up with yet another comeback. The Brewers had come from behind in eight of their victories during their winning streak. The Brewers entered the ninth inning down 1-0, but William Contreras hit a two-run home run off of Reds closer Emilio Pagán to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead. But an error by shortstop Brice Turang to start the ninth allowed the Reds to force extra innings, thanks to a Jose Trevino single that scored Will Benson. Milwaukee tried to bunt over ghost runner Andrew Vaughn to start the 10th inning, but Blake Perkins' attempt didn't travel far beyond home plate, allowing Trevino to pounce on it and throw out Andrew Vaughn at third base. Reds reliever Graham Ashcraft got a popup and a line-drive out to end the inning. Spencer Steer started the bottom of the 10th with a successful sacrifice bunt, which was followed by two intentional walks. Hays saw an 81 mph sweeper and drove it down the third-base line, and Milwaukee's streak was no longer. The Reds were the first on the board in the bottom of the seventh when Hays led off with a double and moved to third on Noelvi Marte's single. Trevino's long drive to right was caught by a leaping Brandon Lockridge in right field, but easily scored a tagging Hays for the game's first run. The lefty pitching duel lived up to expectations, with Reds All-Star starter Andrew Abbott throwing seven shutout innings. Abbott allowed just four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Jose Quintana allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Abbott's ERA fell to 2.28 on the season, and Quintana lowered his to 3.32. Advertisement After his go-ahead homer in the top of the ninth, Contreras did a nice job framing in the bottom of the inning for Grant Anderson. Contreras fooled home-plate umpire Mike Eastabrook on two strikes to Ke'Bryan Hayes, a 2-1 called strike that was low and outside, and a called third strike that was just off the plate for the second out of the inning. After a walk to Matt McLain to load the bases, Anderson got an infield popup by leadoff man TJ Friedl to send the game to extras for the second day in a row. By ending the Brewers' streak, the Reds were able to extend their streak of not being swept in 40 series this season. (Photo of Christian Yelich: Katie Stratman / Imagn Images) Spot the pattern.
