City sign attacking midfielder Alex Newby after Altrincham exit

YORK City have completed their second signing of the Summer - boosting their ranks with attacking midfielder Alex Newby. Newby will officially join York on July 1 upon the expiry of his contract with fellow National League side Altrincham, having reached double figures in goals for the Robins last campaign. Advertisement The 29-year-old brings welcome experience to the City fold, similarly to their first signing of the Summer in Ollie Banks. Newby began his footballing career in the academy of Bolton Wanderers, before turning professional with hometown club Barrow. He made one appearance for the Bluebirds in a bench appearance against Southport, as well as having a loan spell with local side Kendal Town. The midfielder would drop into non-league permanently to join Clitheroe, before climbing up the pyramid to join Chorley in the National League North. Newby stayed a Chorley player for three years, making 90 appearances and scoring 24 times, his first of which came against York in 2018. Advertisement He would also have multiple play-off campaigns with Chorley, which included a promotion into the National League. Following a season in the fifth tier, Newby made the step into the Football League and into Sky Bet League One, joining Rochdale in 2020. Newby did suffer relegation with the Dale to Sky Bet League Two in his first season, managing 82 appearances and 13 goals in two years. Another two years in the Football League would follow for Newby, joining fellow League Two side Colchester United. He made 34 appearances and scored three goals for the Essex-based side, which also included a loan spell with Altrincham. Advertisement Seven goals in 18 games for the Robins made his move permanent, where he has since helped Altrincham to a play-off semi-final in the 2023/24 season. Whilst Altrincham did narrowly miss out on the play-offs in the 2024/25 season, Newby scored 15 goals in 44 matches, proving to be a key player in Phil Parkinson's side. Speaking on his move to York, Newby commented: "It's brilliant to be here, it's a great move for me, it's something that I was really keen to get done as soon as it was mentioned. "Obviously, meeting the manager as well, I'm just really excited to get started."

Altrincham and Tamworth share spoils on final day

Alex Newby's equaliser gave Altrincham a share of the spoils against Tamworth on the final day of the National League regular season. Ben Crompton gave Tamworth the lead in the 14th minute and the visitors went close to doubling their lead when Munashe Sundire's volley crashed back off the crossbar. However, Newby equalised early in the second half after being selflessly set up by Lewis Banks to tap the ball into an empty net. Neither side could find a winner and the point apiece means Altrincham ended the season in ninth place, above their opponents on goal difference.
