Armsta patroller shot dead in Alexandra
An Alexandra, Randburg, Midrand, and Sandton Taxi Association (Armsta) patroller was one of two people fatally shot inside a Toyota Avanza at 7th Avenue and Joe Nhlanhla Street (formerly John Brand) in Alexandra early on Friday morning. Armsta's public relations officer Tladi Lepolesa confirmed to Alex News that one of the deceased was a member of their patrolling team. 'We are aware of the incident. He is one of our patrollers,' Lepolesa said. However, he noted that the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. When asked if the killing could be linked to historical taxi violence, which have long plagued Alexandra, Lepolesa was cautious. 'From where I stand, I'm not aware of any disputes. All outstanding issues between associations were resolved.' Also read: Court grants bail to CPF member accused of son's murder Alexandra's taxi industry has a history of violent turf battles. In the past, there have been reported tensions between Armsta and the Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA). Decades of conflict over routes have claimed numerous lives, including: a 2018 shooting of an Armsta member in Marlboro, a 2020 incident where another was shot multiple times, and the 2024 killing of a 69-year-old taxi boss, reportedly tied to Armsta. In 2023, Alex News reported a breakthrough when Armsta and ATA brokered a deal to silence guns in Alexandra, revealed by its then PR officer John Mnisi. Also read: Fifth suspect added to Tebogo Thobejane's attempt murder case This resolution was recently reaffirmed by Lepolesa, when asked if Armsta had put necessary measures in place to protect their members from violence. 'Armsta and ATA resolved issues, and today we are a united front.' This is a developing story, and no official statement has been released by authorities. The police have secured the crime scene. Mother gets bail after fatal stabbing of son in Alexandra
The Alexandra Magistrate's Court has granted R5 000 bail to a 40-year-old Community Policing Forum (CPF) member accused of murdering her 21-year-old son. According to Alex News, the woman, a mother of four, appeared for a formal bail application yesterday. She faces a single count of murder after her adult son was stabbed to death, allegedly by her, on July 5 at their home in Alexandra. Kitchen argument turned fatal The prosecution said the incident followed an argument in the kitchen, sparked by the son's apparent intoxication. The dispute escalated, culminating in the fatal stabbing, witnessed by two of the accused's minor children. Describing the charge as a Schedule 5 offence — a serious crime requiring stringent bail scrutiny — the state acknowledged its gravity but did not oppose bail. 'There is no element of premeditation that the state is alleging,' the prosecutor said, emphasising that the act was not planned. The state urged the court to balance the interests of justice with the needs of the accused's children, especially her infant. Defence cites community ties The defence presented the accused's affidavit, which underscored her deep roots in Alexandra. In it, the accused revealed that Alexandra is not only her home, but also her family's and her workplace as a CPF member. She noted that she does not have any travel documents. It was on the basis of this affidavit that the defence assured the court the accused posed no flight risk. The defence stated that the accused has no prior convictions, pending cases or protection orders. In her affidavit, she also committed to not interfere with witnesses or the ongoing investigation should she be released on bail. Court ruling and bail conditions After a two-hour adjournment, the magistrate delivered her ruling. 'There is no evidence before this court that she may attempt to flee justice,' the magistrate stated, citing the accused's lack of travel documents and strong community ties. She also found no evidence suggesting the accused would commit further crimes, intimidate witnesses or disturb public order. Bail was set at R5 000, with conditions including that the accused report to the Alexandra Police Station once a week, be moved to an alternative home, and have no contact with witnesses. She was, however, allowed to reunite with her infant child. The case was postponed to August 13 for further investigation. Alex News knows the identity of the accused but has chosen to withhold it to protect the privacy of the minor witnesses involved. Maponyane, a community patroller and former convict, initially went into hiding following the incident. After weeks on the run, he surrendered to police and remains in custody. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, with authorities working to gather all necessary evidence. Tebogo Thobejane botched hit case: ‘Cat' and co-accused appear in court
The high-profile case against Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, his wife Tsakani Matlala, Musa Kekana and Tiego Floyd Mabusela has been postponed to August 26. According to Alex News, this follows their brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court today on charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering. The charges are linked to a botched assassination attempt on Matlala's former partner, actress Tebogo Thobejane. Magistrate Rennie Boshoff announced the postponement after the defence raised concerns about incomplete disclosure of case documents. The defence argued the state had only partially disclosed the docket while withholding critical documents, such as Matlala's bank statements. They accused the state of attempting to ambush them and requested full disclosure to prepare their case adequately. Boshoff said their request would be granted. The request for the crucial documents centres on allegations that Matlala transferred over R100 000 from his business account to the account of someone linked to Mabusela. A significant portion of that money was later funnelled to Mabusela himself. To disguise the payment, the accused allegedly fabricated a fraudulent funeral parlour invoice to convince police the money Mabusela received was for his mother's funeral, when it was allegedly intended to finance the hit on Thobejane. The attempt on Thobejane's life took place on the N1 highway near Sandton in 2023. At the time, Thobejane and her friend were driving when they were ambushed, and their car was shot multiple times. Her friend was wounded. Kekana and Mabusela were released on a warning. Tsakani, who in May was added to the charge sheet as accused number four, was released on R20 000 bail in the same month. Matlala remains in custody. Watch the video: Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. Low pressure to no water for 42 hours in some Johannesburg areas
Parts of Johannesburg will experience low pressure to no water for 42 hours from Wednesday, 23 April, due to planned maintenance. The maintenance is scheduled from 18:00 on Wednesday, 23 April to 12:00 on Friday, 25 April. JOHANNESBURG WATER TO CONDUCT 42-HOUR MAINTENANCE Johannesburg Water said its teams will be installing pipes at the Hector Norris Pump Station, and this will result in low pressure to no water. Water tankers will be provided as an alternative supply, however, locations have not been confirmed. The following areas will be affected by the planned maintenance: Johannesburg CBD Newtown Selby Jeppestown Doornfontein Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water has reiterated that theft and vandalism are negatively impacting supply to both businesses and residents as vital assets such as pipes, pumps, and manholes are frequently targeted by offenders. Johannesburg Water's General Manager of Operations, Mzakhe Mtshweni, told Alex News that acts of vandalism not only compromise service delivery but also pose a grave danger to public safety. 'Tragically, missing manhole covers have led to the loss of lives, with families mourning loved ones who have fallen victim to these hazards. This senseless destruction is costing both lives and livelihoods, and urgent action is required to address the issue,' he said. The publication further reported that Johannesburg Water plans to introduce smart manhole covers equipped with sensors at strategic locations to monitor tampering. These smart covers will facilitate 24/7 oversight, enabling immediate action either to thwart theft attempts or to ensure prompt replacements when needed. 'The ongoing theft and vandalism of Johannesburg's water infrastructure is crippling service delivery and putting lives at risk. Johannesburg Water is tackling these issues by enhancing security, raising public awareness, and working with law enforcement. With investments in infrastructure upgrades and smart technologies, the entity is focused on restoring reliable services and protecting its assets,' Mtshweni said. DO YOU LIVE IN JOHANNESBURG?
