Soccer-Schade on target as Brentford boost European hopes with win at Ipswich

Soccer Football - Premier League - Ipswich Town v Brentford - Portman Road, Ipswich, Britain - May 10, 2025 Brentford's Kevin Schade scores their first goal past Ipswich Town's Alex Palmer and Dara O'Shea REUTERS/David Klein IPSWICH, England (Reuters) -Brentford boosted their hopes of playing European football next season as they beat already-relegated Ipswich Town 1-0 thanks to a first-half header by Kevin Schade at Portman Road in the Premier League on Saturday. With four successive wins, Brentford are eighth in the standings with 55 points from 36 matches. Ipswich sit 18th on 22 points with just four wins. Ipswich had made a bright start to the game and came close to an opener after just three minutes but striker Liam Delap's header was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Mark Flekken. But it was Brentford who took the lead when Schade met a corner from fellow forward Bryan Mbeumo in the 18th minute, steering the ball into the far corner after some confusion in the box. German Schade has now scored four goals in his last three Premier League games, while Cameroon international Mbeumo became just the third player to be directly involved in more than 25 goals in the Premier League this season after Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak. Yoane Wissa nearly put Brentford 2-0 up minutes after the interval but the forward's effort was saved by goalkeeper Alex Palmer, who made another fine save to keep out Mbeumo's right-foot volley in the 73rd minute. Brentford, who kept up the pressure and constantly looked dangerous, were denied a penalty in the 69th minute after Axel Tuanzebe pulled fellow defender Nathan Collins to the ground. However, it was a far from comfortable afternoon for Brentford as Ipswich pushed for a equaliser late on with Flekken having to come to their rescue in added time when he made a brilliant point-blank save to deny centre back Cameron Burgess. Brentford, who have never qualified for Europe, next host 11th-placed Fulham on May 18 before taking a trip to 14th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers for their final game of the season on May 25. 'Helps to have that bond when we've got to roll up our sleeves'

Ipswich goalkeeper Alex Palmer has praised the "close bond and relationship" between the team as it proving to be a big positive in their fight to stay in the Premier only signing from West Bromwich Albion in the January transfer window, Palmer has already seen the impact of having a squad that has progressed through the ranks together during the tough times."It has been a bit of a whirlwind," said Palmer. "Knowing a few of the lads has helped me to settle in a little bit quicker and so has just being thrown in. Everyone is then able to see what you are about. It's all well and good doing that in training, but getting stuck into games helps."I've really enjoyed the day-to-day training environment and camaraderie. You can see why they have been so successful in the past few years."It's hugely important to have that and keeping the players who have had that success has been pivotal. There is a close bond and relationship, so that helps when it is tough on the pitch."It helps to have that friendship and bond when we've got to roll up our sleeves and dig in together. I think you can see that we are not rolling over lightly."But the Premier League is ruthless. Hopefully we can be on the right side of a result this weekend."

Premier League accumulator picks: Which bets to add to your weekend treble

This weekend's Premier League fixtures promise intrigue and excitement — and the scope to alter the top and bottom of the table. We've scanned the markets and picked out three wagers that bettors should add to their accumulators. Five of Ipswich's last six league games have produced three or more goals, with some of the scorelines getting really out of hand. There's been a 6-0 trouncing at the hands of Manchester City, 4-1 losses to both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and a wild 3-2 defeat to Manchester United. Advertisement The only game that hasn't covered the over in that span was the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, but their expected goals against (xGA) figure on the day was 2.4. Put another way, they were statistically expected to concede more, but goalkeeper Alex Palmer produced a stunning display, saving them from defeat. With their opponents, Crystal Palace, starting to heat up (three wins from their last four) and finding some home form at last, this game feels ripe for goals. The Eagles' top striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta, may be out injured, but Oliver Glasner has plenty of other firepower to call upon, with Eddie Nketiah stepping into the void well lately and enjoying great support from Ebere Eze and Ismaïla Sarr on the flanks. Handily, Palace also haven't kept a home clean sheet since October, which should encourage bettors that this game has every chance of clearing over 2.5. Unlike with our first selection, the statistics aren't exactly pointing us in the direction of the under 2.5 market here. So far, nine of Wolves' 13 home league games have hit the over, while Everton have been a much greater attacking threat since David Moyes took the managerial reins in January. So why the pick? It's based around one pivotal player who is missing: Matheus Cunha. He's scored 13 league goals this season despite a difficult overall campaign for his team, often producing something spectacular from a distance to break a game wide open. He was shown a red card for violent conduct in the FA Cup last weekend after headbutting Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. He'll now begin a lengthy suspension, calling into question Wolves' goalscoring capacity this weekend, and in the weeks to follow. You could certainly forgive Aston Villa for feeling a little distracted from the league. Manager Unai Emery continually insists it's the priority competition, but with his charges enjoying two cup adventures, the schedule is stretching this squad to the max. The general trend this season has been that Villa struggle domestically after a big Champions League night earlier in the week. They've won just one of their eight games played following these occasions, which was way back in September, losing four and drawing three. Advertisement With this pattern in mind, and given that only four teams have picked up fewer points on the road than Villa's 14 this season, it's easy to believe in a Brentford side who have had nine days rest and preparation compared to their opponent's three. The Bees are an attractive price to win outright, but backing Villa to nick a goal in the process – which they almost always do – stretches the odds nicely.
