35 locks for Broncos' 53-man roster

With the Denver Broncos wrapping up the first week of training camp today, we've put together a quick list of 35 players who appear to be locks to make the 53-man roster this summer. If this projection is accurate and these 35 players are safe, that leaves 18 spots up for grabs going into training camp. Of course, few NFL players are truly ever "locks," but these players seem about as safe as you can get. Three quick notes: fullback Michael Burton could be cut from the active roster and signed to the practice squad, just like he was last year. Linebacker Drew Sanders will likely make the initial 53-man roster and then get moved to injured reserve. Fellow linebacker Alex Singleton does not make our lock list. He's likely to make the team, but he'll turn 32 this season and is coming off a torn ACL and carries a large cap hit. Broncos locks for 53-man roster QB Bo Nix QB Jarrett Stidham RB J.K. Broncos roster: LB Alex Singleton (No. 49) hopes to bounce back from torn ACL

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at seventh-year linebacker Alex Singleton, No. 49. Before the : Singleton (6-2, 240 pounds) came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Bozeman, Montana, via Montana State University, with the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. From 2016-18, Singleton took his talents north of the border to the Canadian Football League, where he played 54 games for the Calgary Stampeders. While in Canada, Singleton had 311 tackles, four sacks, one interception, six forced fumbles and 17 special-teams tackles. A two-time CFL All-Star, Singleton won the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award award in 2017, and he helped the Stampeders win a Grey Cup championship in 2018. In 2019, Singleton signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he immediately began making an impact. From 2019-21, Singleton played in 42 games, with 19 starts. Singleton had 262 total tackles (158 solo, 104 assisted, nine tackles for loss), 2.0 sacks, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, five pass deflections and two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns. Broncos tenure: Singleton was signed by the Denver Broncos prior to the 2022 season. Like he did in Philadelphia, Singleton made a huge impact in the middle of the Denver defense. Singleton played in all 17 games, starting 12. Singleton proceeded to have a career-high in tackles, with 163 total tackles (101 solo, 62 assisted, six tackles for loss). He also had three pass deflections and one forced fumble in 2022. According to the Broncos, Singleton became the only NFL player since at least 1994 to have recorded multiple games of 20+ tackles in a single season during 2022. In 2023, Singleton again played in all 17 games, starting 16 games. Again, Singleton set a career-high in tackles, with 177 total tackles (106 solo, 71 assisted, six tackles for loss), four pass deflections, two fumble recoveries and 2.0 sacks. In 2023, Singleton recorded the most double-digit tackle games (13) in a single season by any NFL player since at least 1999. Prior to the 2024 season, Singleton signed a three-year contract worth $18 million. In 2024, Singleton was rewarded as a defensive captain, a leader in the middle of the field. Singleton would likely have had another big season, had he not suffered a tremendous setback in Week 3, when he tore his ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Remarkably, Singleton played the rest of the game on the torn ligament. After successful surgery, Singleton looks to be healthy going into 2025, once again a key leader in the Broncos' defense. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Singleton, 31, posted great numbers for the Broncos several years in a row. Denver chose Singleton over former linebacker Josey Jewell after they each had 100+ tackles in a season. Singleton displayed signature toughness and tremendous leadership, being voted captain for the first time in his career in 2024. Assuming he can return to his pre-injury form, Singleton is poised to start for the Broncos in 2025. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Broncos roster: LB Justin Strnad (No. 40) coming off career year

Broncos Wire's 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at sixth-year linebacker Justin Strnad, No. 40. Before the : Strnad (6-3, 235 pounds) was a four-year player at Wake Forest from 2016-19, playing in 46 games throughout his time with the Demon Deacons. Strnad compiled 244 total tackles (145 solo, 99 assisted, 24 tackles for loss), 8.0 sacks, four interceptions, 10 pass deflections, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Strnad's productive college career led to him being selected by the Denver Broncos in the fifth round (178 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. Broncos tenure: Strnad's rookie season ended before it began, when he suffered a season-ending wrist injury. Strnad came back in 2021, making 36 total tackles (23 solo, 13 assisted) and three quarterback hits. From 2022-23, Strnad was exclusively playing special teams, playing over 80 percent of special teams snaps each year, making 10 total tackles (eight solo, two assisted). Strnad had a breakout season on defense in 2024, playing in all 17 games and one postseason game. He stepped up when starting linebacker Alex Singleton tore his ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3. Strnad made 73 total tackles (48 solo, 25 assisted, eight tackles for loss), three pass deflections and 3.0 sacks in eight starts last fall. Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Strnad helped step up in the absence of Singleton, along with the likes of Cody Barton. Barton departed in free agency, and the Broncos signed former 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, likely putting Strnad in a backup role behind Singleton and Greenlaw. With starting experience, though, Strnad is a valuable rotational linebacker, and he should have a key role in the kicking game. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. Broncos sign veteran LB after 3 injuries at position

The Denver Broncos are shoring up their depth at inside linebacker. With Alex Singleton (thumb) sidelined for about a week, Dre Greenlaw feeling tight and Drew Sanders (foot) expected to miss the start of the regular season, the Broncos signed veteran inside linebacker Garret Wallow on Friday. KUSA-TV's Mike Klis was among the first to break the news of Wallow joining the team. Wallow (6-2, 230 pounds) originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick out of TCU with the Houston Texans in 2021. After three years in Houston, he joined the Tennessee Titans in 2023. The 26-year-old linebacker has totaled 42 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup in 35 career games (five starts). Wallow joins an inside linebacker room that includes Greenlaw, Singleton, Sanders, Levelle Bailey, Justin Strnad, Jordan Turner, Karene Reid and JB Brown. Bailey has been stepping up with Singleton sidelined. Denver previously placed undrafted rookie outside linebacker Johnny Walker on injured reserve and signed UFL pass rusher Garrett Nelson on Thursday. Wallow wears No. 46 and Nelson was given No. 59. Broncos sign OLB from UFL after 2 injuries at position

The Denver Broncos are adding a linebacker, but not at the specific spot that some fans expected. After losing Alex Singleton (thumb) and Drew Sanders (foot) to injuries, the Broncos brought in four inside linebackers for tryouts, but none of them were signed. Today, Denver added an outside linebacker. The Broncos signed OLB Garrett Nelson, according to the Denver Post's Parker Gabriel. The news of the Nelson addition comes after rookie OLB Que Robinson did not practice the last two days. Undrafted OLB Johnny Walker is also not at practice today and the Denver Post's Luca Evans reported Walker's dealing with an injury. Nelson (6-3, 248 pounds) spent the last two spring seasons playing for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas. He recorded 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 17 games. Nelson played college football at Nebraska. Denver has not yet announced a corresponding move, but the team is expected to place Walker on injured reserve. If he is placed on IR, Walker will be ruled out for the rest of the season.
