Rookie Alex Toohey makes Summer League debut at California Classic vs. Heat
After two games on the sideline, the Golden State Warriors' first pick of the 2025 NBA draft made his long-awaited Summer League debut on Tuesday at San Francisco's Chase Center. Due to his draft day trade not being official by the start of the California Classic, the No. 52 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, Alex Toohey, missed his first two Summer League contests. Advertisement Yet, after an extended wait, the Australian wing was on the court at Chase Center on Tuesday against the Miami Heat. In the opening frame, Toohey got on the board, scoring four points while grabbing three rebounds in the first quarter. Toohey was quiet for the remainder of the contest, adding only two more points and three more rebounds for the rest of the game. Toohey finished the game with six points on 1-of-5 shooting from the field to go along with six rebounds in 24 minutes in Golden State's 93-79 loss to Miami. For the first time, Toohey suited up alongside fellow second-round pick Will Richard. Richard tallied 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field in 20 minutes against the Heat. Rookie Will Richard makes Summer League debut at California Classic vs. Spurs
While the Golden State Warriors secured a win over the Los Angeles Lakers in their California Classic Summer League opener, they were missing a pair of key pieces. Due to their draft day trades not being official with the league yet, rookies Alex Toohey and Will Richard were sidelined on Saturday night at Chase Center. However, with their trades going through on Sunday morning, Richard suited up for the first time in gold and blue at Chase Center for Game 2 of the California Classic. Despite Richard's debut, Toohey was sidelined again on Sunday against the San Antonio Spurs. Richard quickly impressed, showing why the Warriors selected him in the second round of the 2025 draft. The Florida Gator product tallied 16 points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field with four rebounds, two steals and an assist in 25 minutes. Richard missed a game-winning attempt from beyond the arc as the clock ran down to zero in Golden State's 90-88 loss to San Antonio. Fellow rookie LJ Cryer led the Warriors with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field with five made triples in 22 minutes. Unfortunately for the former back-to-back MVP, he will miss the opportunity to watch two of Golden State's rookies in what should have been their respective team debuts. Advertisement According to Warriors beat reporter Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, both Alex Toohey and Will Richard, who are both second-round picks from the 2025 NBA Draft, will not be able to suit up for Saturday's contest. As it turns out, Toohey and Richard's draft day trades to the Warriors have not yet been made official, making them ineligible to play against the Lakers. The Warriors acquired Toohey, a 6-foot-8 forward from Australia, on draft day by trading their 41st pick to move down in the draft. In exchange, they received the 59th and 52nd overall picks, which they used to select Toohey. Golden State then packaged the 59th pick in another trade to move up to No. 56, which was used to draft Richard. The 21-year-old is a solid slasher and cutter, making him a potentially good fit in the Warriors' motion-heavy offense. Richard, on the other hand, is a prototypical 3-and-D guard. He was a respectable threat from deep during his time at Florida and has been commended for his rebounding skills as a guard. Either way, Warriors fans will have to wait for both rookies' trades to become official before they get to see them on the court. Despite the return of hoops to Chase Center, Golden State's new rookies Alex Toohey and Will Richard's Summer League debut will have to wait. The Warriors were without both 2025 second-round picks Alex Toohey and Will Richard in Saturday's California Classic opener against the Los Angeles Lakers. According to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area, Toohey and Richard weren't able to play on Saturday due to their draft day trades being unofficial. Via @DaltonJ_Johnson on X: Prior to the start of the second round, the Warriors traded the No. 41 overall selection to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for a pair of second-rounders. The Warriors used the No. 52 overall pick to select Toohey out of Australia. The Warriors then made another trade with the Memphis Grizzlies to move up to the No. 56 overall pick to draft Richard out of Florida.
